Chapter 9: The Woman Who Built The Lies
I had spent the last twenty-four hours discovering that nothing in my life was what I thought it was.
My husband had a secret lover.
My father was alive.
My mother had hidden the truth.
My biological father was Alexander Pierce.
Declan Pierce was my protector.
Adrian Pierce was the son nobody wanted to acknowledge.
And now…
My grandmother was standing in front of me.
A woman I had buried years ago.
A woman who had attended my childhood birthdays.
A woman whose portrait hung in my mother’s house.
A woman I remembered as gentle.
Warm.
Kind.
But the woman standing in the doorway of the old Pierce estate was not the grandmother I remembered.
She looked exactly the same.
Perfect silver hair.
Elegant black coat.
A diamond necklace resting against her throat.
The only difference was her eyes.
The woman I remembered looked at me with love.
This woman looked at me like I was a business decision.
“Grace,” she said softly.
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
My mind was trying to connect two impossible realities.
The grandmother who baked cookies with me.
The woman who controlled the destruction of my family.
They couldn’t be the same person.
But everyone’s reaction told me they were.
My mother looked like she had seen a nightmare walk through the door.
“Eleanor.””
My grandmother smiled.
“Still dramatic, Evelyn.””
My mother’s face tightened.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Eleanor Pierce stepped into the room.
“I created this family.””
Her eyes moved around the estate.
“I think I have every right to be here.””
Declan immediately stepped forward.
“You were supposed to be gone.””
She looked at him.
A small smile appeared.
“You sound just like your father.””
The words made Declan freeze.
“Don’t talk about him.””
“Why?””
Her voice remained calm.
“Because he chose you?””
The tension in the room became unbearable.
I looked at Declan.
Then at Eleanor.
“You knew all of this.””
She turned toward me.
“Yes.””
The answer was so simple.
No denial.
No excuse.
Just yes.
My anger finally broke through.
“You knew who I was.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my father was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my entire family was falling apart.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“And you did nothing.””
She studied me.
“That depends on what you believe I should have done.””
I almost laughed.
“What should you have done?””
“Protected the Pierce legacy.””
There it was.
Not love.
Not family.
A legacy.
A company.
A name.
Everything I had spent my life watching people sacrifice themselves for.
“You destroyed people for a company.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I destroyed people because they threatened something bigger.””
I stared.
“What could possibly be bigger than your family?””
She looked at me.
“You.””
The answer surprised me.
I frowned.
“What?””
Eleanor walked closer.
“You think this was about money.””
She glanced toward the documents scattered across the desk.
“It was never about money.””
“Then what was it about?””
She looked at Alexander’s old office.
“Control.””
The word hung in the air.
“My son built an empire,” she continued.
“He created something powerful.””
She looked at Declan.
“But power attracts people who want to take it.””
Declan’s voice was cold.
“Like you.””
Her expression barely changed.
“I was protecting what belonged to us.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You were protecting what belonged to you.””
Eleanor turned toward him.
For the first time, I saw anger in her face.
“You were always emotional.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“And you were always cruel.””
The room became silent.
Because Adrian wasn’t afraid of her.
Not anymore.
“You used me,” he said.
Eleanor looked away.
“I gave you opportunities.””
“You gave me orders.””
“You wanted power.””
“I wanted my father to see me.””
That sentence changed something.
For a moment, Eleanor looked almost human.
Almost.
Then it disappeared.
I looked at Adrian.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“I knew she was involved.””
“How?””
“Because she told me.””
My stomach dropped.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
“She needed someone to blame.””
Eleanor didn’t deny it.
“She needed a reason to keep Alexander away from you.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Finally.
The question I had been asking all day.
Why me?
Why my life?
Why my family?
Eleanor’s answer came quietly.
“Because Alexander loved you.””
I frowned.
“That’s why?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“He changed after finding out about you.””
I listened.
“He stopped caring about the empire. He wanted to sell parts of the company. Give control to people he trusted. Walk away.””
She looked at Declan.
“And I couldn’t allow that.””
“You destroyed your own son’s happiness.””
“I saved his creation.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You keep saying that like it matters.””
“It does.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“It doesn’t.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I spent my entire life believing my family was my safe place.””
I looked at Eleanor.
“My mother lied.””
Then Declan.
“My father disappeared.””
Then Ethan.
“My husband betrayed me.””
I looked back at Eleanor.
“And now I find out the person who started it all thinks she did it for my own good?””
My voice broke.
“That’s not protection.””
Silence.
“That’s selfishness.””
For the first time, Eleanor had no immediate answer.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Grace.””
I turned.
He looked exhausted.
Broken.
“I need to tell you something.””
I stared.
“What now?””
He swallowed.
“About Vanessa.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about her?””
He looked at Eleanor.
Then away.
“She wasn’t working for Adrian.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Ethan continued.
“I thought she was.””
He looked at me.
“I was wrong.””
I didn’t speak.
“Vanessa was working for Eleanor.””
The room exploded.
My mother gasped.
Declan’s expression changed.
Adrian laughed once.
A humorless sound.
“Of course.””
Eleanor remained calm.
Too calm.
I looked at her.
“You sent Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was horrifying.
“Why?””
“To get close to you.””
“Why?””
She looked at my stomach.
At my unborn child.
And suddenly, the answer terrified me.
“Because you were about to inherit everything.””
My hand moved protectively over my stomach.
“What does my baby have to do with this?””
Eleanor’s face softened slightly.
“Everything.””
The room went cold.
“Your father changed the inheritance agreement after learning you were pregnant.””
I stared.
“He did what?””
“He believed your child represented the future of the family.””
My heart raced.
“And?””
“And he created a final condition.””
Declan stepped forward.
“What condition?””
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“The company would only transfer completely to Grace if she could prove she wasn’t being controlled by anyone around her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He wanted to know if the people closest to you loved you… or loved what you represented.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Everyone around me had wanted something.
Even if some of them loved me.
Even if some of them regretted hurting me.
They had still made choices for me.
Eleanor reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“My son left this for you.””
I didn’t move.
Another letter.
Another secret.
Another piece of a life I never got to live.
“What is it?””
She looked at me.
“The final inheritance.””
I hesitated.
Then took it.
Inside was a single page.
My father’s handwriting.
Again.
*Grace,*
*If you are reading this, then everyone who wanted control has finally revealed themselves.*
I swallowed.
*But there is one final truth you must know.*
My heart started racing.
*The person who betrayed you most was not the one who lied to you.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching.
I continued reading.
*It was the person who had the chance to tell you everything… and chose silence.*
My eyes moved lower.
The next sentence made my blood freeze.
*Grace, the person who raised you was never Thomas Hart.*
I stopped.
No.
Impossible.
I read the next line.
Again.
And again.
*Thomas Hart loved you. But he was not your father.*
My hands shook.
I looked toward my mother.
Then Eleanor.
Then Declan.
But the final line was the one that destroyed me.
Because my father had written the name of the person who knew the truth from the beginning.
The person who had been there since my birth.
The person who had watched me grow.
The person who had lied to me longer than anyone.
*Your real mother is not Evelyn Hart.*
The room went silent.
I slowly looked at the woman standing beside me.
Evelyn.
My mother.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I wondered if I had ever known my own name.
