Chapter 9: The Truth That Destroyed the Williams Family

Marcus didn't sit down.

He stood in front of his father, waiting for an answer.

"Tell me what happened to Grandpa.""

Robert's face was pale.

"I should have told you years ago.""

"Then tell me now.""

Robert looked toward the door.

Rachel quietly asked the security team to give us privacy.

When the room was empty, Robert began.

"Your grandfather, William Williams, founded the factory. He built it from nothing. He believed every employee deserved to be treated fairly.""

Marcus nodded.

"I remember.""

"Twenty years ago, the company began expanding. We needed additional financing. Diane suggested bringing in a private investor.""

"Richard?""

Robert nodded.

"Richard introduced us to a group of investors. They promised to finance the expansion in exchange for a portion of the property.""

I leaned forward.

"What happened?""

Robert rubbed his face.

"The contracts were fraudulent. They contained clauses transferring more ownership than we had agreed to.""

Marcus frowned.

"Did Grandpa know?""

"Yes. He discovered the changes when the documents were reviewed.""

"And Mom?""

Robert looked away.

"Your mother had signed some of the paperwork.""

Marcus stared at him.

"So she knew?""

"She claimed she didn't understand what she was signing.""

"Did you believe her?""

Robert didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Marcus turned away.

"What happened to Grandpa?""

Robert took a deep breath.

"He confronted Richard and Diane. He threatened to report the fraud and recover the property.""

I looked at him.

"And then?""

"Three days later, he was involved in a car accident.""

Marcus went still.

"An accident?""

Robert nodded.

"His car left the road during heavy rain. The police concluded that he lost control.""

Marcus's voice became quiet.

"Why did Vanessa say he didn't die in an accident?""

Robert closed his eyes.

"Because the night before he died, your grandfather left me a voicemail.""

I leaned forward.

"What did it say?""

Robert opened his phone.

He searched through an old archive.

After several minutes, he found a recording.

His finger hovered over the play button.

"I've never played this for anyone," he whispered.

Marcus looked at him.

"Play it.""

Robert pressed the button.

An older man's voice filled the room.

"Robert, it's your father. I need you to listen carefully.""

There was a brief pause.

"I've found the original transfer agreement. Diane and Richard changed the documents. They're trying to take the property and hide the mineral rights.""

Another pause.

"If anything happens to me, contact Eleanor Carter. She has the original records. Do not trust Richard. And whatever you do, keep Marcus away from this.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at his father.

"You knew?""

Robert nodded slowly.

"I suspected something. But I didn't know how far it went.""

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because Diane convinced me the recording proved nothing. Richard said it would destroy the family and that nobody would believe us.""

Marcus shook his head.

"So you did nothing?""

Robert's eyes filled.

"I was weak.""

Marcus turned away.

I watched him struggle to breathe.

His family had not simply lied about money.

They had built their lives around a secret that had followed them for two decades.

I stepped closer.

"Marcus.""

He shook his head.

"Not now, Nia.""

I stopped.

He looked at his father again.

"Did Grandpa know Mom was involved?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did he know Vanessa would eventually take over the property?""

"No.""

Marcus let out a bitter laugh.

"At least he was spared that.""

Robert began crying.

"I know I've failed you.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You didn't just fail me. You let me grow up believing our family was something it wasn't.""

Robert lowered his head.

For several minutes, nobody moved.

Then my phone rang.

Samuel Bennett.

I answered.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Nia, I've reviewed the documents. I'm bringing the original agreement to your office, but there's something you need to know first.""

"What?""

"The trust contains a condition that wasn't included in the scanned copies.""

I looked at Daniel.

"What condition?""

"If the Williams family knowingly concealed a fraudulent transfer involving the original property, the trust can demand immediate restoration of its ownership rights.""

"Meaning?""

"Meaning the warehouse and the mineral rights may be returned to the original ownership structure.""

I looked at Robert.

"Can that happen?""

Robert nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Samuel continued.

"But there's a problem. Someone has filed an emergency application claiming that the original agreement was destroyed years ago.""

"Who filed it?""

"Richard Cole.""

Daniel immediately opened his laptop.

"On what grounds?""

"He's claiming the original agreement was invalid because Eleanor allegedly transferred her interest voluntarily.""

I frowned.

"That's false.""

"I know. But he has submitted a notarized statement supposedly signed by Eleanor.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Another forged signature?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can we challenge it?""

"Absolutely. But we need the original document.""

I glanced at the old envelope my grandmother had left me.

"Mr. Bennett, my grandmother specifically told me you had the original.""

"I do.""

"Then bring it.""

"I will.""

After the call ended, Daniel looked at me.

"We need to move quickly. If Richard's application is accepted before we submit the original agreement, he could temporarily block the trust's claim.""

"Then file an objection immediately.""

He nodded.

At that moment, Rachel entered the room.

"Nia, the bank has responded.""

I looked up.

"Did they stop the transfer?""

"Yes. The funds are frozen.""

"Good.""

"But they've identified the person who submitted the authorization.""

"Who?""

Rachel turned the laptop around.

A photograph appeared.

It was taken by a security camera inside the bank's verification office.

A woman sat at the counter, wearing a dark coat and sunglasses.

She had presented herself as an authorized representative of the Eleanor Carter Family Trust.

I recognized her immediately.

Vanessa.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"She went to the bank?""

Rachel nodded.

"Yesterday afternoon.""

I looked closer.

There was another detail.

A man stood behind her, partially visible near the entrance.

I enlarged the image.

Richard Cole.

Daniel swore under his breath.

"They coordinated the entire thing.""

Rachel opened another file.

"The bank also recovered a recording of Vanessa speaking with the verification officer.""

"Play it.""

The audio began.

Vanessa's voice was clear.

"I'm authorized to act on behalf of the estate. My grandmother's representative is unavailable, but everything has been approved.""

The officer asked for identification.

Vanessa replied:

"I've brought the original authorization.""

Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.

"If this transfer isn't completed by Friday, my family could lose everything.""

The recording ended.

Marcus looked at the screen.

"She tried to steal Grandma's money.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He looked at his father.

"How could you let this happen?""

Robert shook his head.

"I didn't know she had gone that far.""

Then Marcus's phone rang again.

This time, it was Diane.

He answered.

"Hello?""

Her voice was cold.

"Your sister has been detained.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

"She's at the police station. They're questioning her about the bank transfer.""

He looked at me.

Diane continued.

"This is your fault.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Mom, she committed fraud.""

"She was protecting the family!""

"By pretending to be Grandma?""

Diane shouted.

"She did what she had to do!""

The admission was so clear that even Robert heard it.

Marcus looked at his father.

Then back at the phone.

"Did you know?""

Diane went silent.

"Mom?""

Finally, she answered.

"Your sister was following instructions.""

Marcus's face hardened.

"Whose instructions?""

Diane's voice dropped.

"Mine.""

Robert grabbed the edge of the desk.

Marcus whispered:

"You told her to do it?""

"Don't pretend you understand what was at stake.""

"What was at stake, Mom? Money?""

Diane began crying.

"Everything I sacrificed for this family!""

Marcus shook his head.

"You sacrificed Grandpa. You sacrificed Dad. And now you're sacrificing Vanessa.""

Diane suddenly screamed.

"Your grandfather deserved what happened!""

The room went silent.

Even the sound of the air conditioning seemed to disappear.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Robert slowly stood.

"What did you say?"" he whispered.

Diane realized what she had admitted.

But she didn't take it back.

Instead, she said:

"Ask your father what happened the night your grandfather died.""

The call ended.

Robert sank into his chair.

Marcus turned toward him.

"Was Mom responsible?""

Robert's eyes filled.

"I don't know.""

"Then who was?""

Robert reached into his jacket and removed a small, folded piece of paper.

"I found this in your grandfather's old office after he died.""

He handed it to Marcus.

The paper contained a handwritten message.

If anything happens to me, the person who arranged the meeting knows the truth.

Below it was a name.

Richard Cole.

Marcus looked at me.

"Then Richard knows what happened.""

I nodded.

"And now we know where to look.""

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly stood.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He covered the microphone.

"The police have discovered something in Richard's old case files.""

"What?""

He swallowed.

"An original photograph from the night of the accident.""

"Why is that important?""

Daniel looked at Robert.

"Because the photograph shows someone standing beside your grandfather's car.""

Robert stared at him.

"Who?""

Daniel turned the screen toward us.

The image was grainy, but the person was recognizable.

A young Richard Cole.

Standing beside the driver's door.

And next to him was a woman holding an umbrella.

Diane Williams.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

His voice was barely audible.

"Mom was there?""

Robert closed his eyes.

Then Daniel received another message.

He read it.

And his expression changed.

"Nia, there's one more thing.""

"What?""

"The police believe the photograph was taken by someone inside the car.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Your grandfather's passenger.""

Marcus swallowed.

"Who was that?""

Daniel answered quietly.

May you like

"Vanessa Williams.""

And suddenly, the little girl who had laughed while her mother humiliated me had become the most important witness in a twenty-year-old crime.
