Chapter 6: The Twenty-Million-Dollar Secret Beneath the Warehouse

I arrived at Williams Industrial Holdings at 8:00 the following morning.

Marcus came with me.

He hadn't slept much, and the dark circles beneath his eyes were impossible to miss.

The factory sat on a large stretch of land outside the city.

Its brick walls were weathered, and several windows needed replacing. Trucks moved slowly through the loading area while employees in reflective vests crossed between the buildings.

It didn't look like a twenty-million-dollar property.

But Robert Williams had insisted that we see it for ourselves.

He was waiting inside the main office.

When Marcus entered, his father stood up.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Then Robert opened his arms.

Marcus walked straight into them.

"Dad.""

Robert held his son tightly.

"I'm sorry.""

Marcus pulled back.

"Why didn't you tell me what was happening?""

"I thought I could handle it.""

"You let Mom use my name.""

Robert lowered his eyes.

"I didn't know she'd gone that far.""

"You knew something was wrong.""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

Marcus stepped away.

"Then why did you stay quiet?""

His father looked toward the office window.

"Because I was afraid.""

Marcus frowned.

"Afraid of Mom?""

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, "Your mother has controlled this family for a long time. I convinced myself that keeping the peace was the same as protecting everyone.""

Marcus shook his head.

"It wasn't.""

"I know.""

I stepped forward.

"Mr. Williams, you mentioned something beneath the warehouse.""

Robert looked at me.

"Come with me.""

He led us down a narrow corridor toward a locked storage room.

Inside were old filing cabinets, rolled architectural drawings, and several boxes covered in dust.

Robert unlocked a metal cabinet.

He removed a large envelope.

"I've kept these documents here for almost twenty years.""

He placed them on the table.

I opened the envelope.

Inside were property surveys, geological reports, and engineering plans.

The first report described the land beneath the warehouse.

I scanned the technical details.

Then I noticed a highlighted section.

Underground mineral deposits.

Marcus frowned.

"What am I looking at?""

Robert pointed to the report.

"Twenty years ago, a geological survey discovered a valuable deposit beneath part of this property.""

"What kind of deposit?"" I asked.

"Rare industrial minerals. Materials used in advanced manufacturing.""

I read the report again.

The estimated value was substantial, although the figures were old and required updated assessment.

Marcus stared at his father.

"Why didn't you sell the land?""

"Because I didn't own the mineral rights outright. The original agreement required the property to remain within the family trust until certain conditions were met.""

I turned another page.

There was a clause requiring environmental assessments and regulatory approval before extraction could begin.

"This could explain why the warehouse was transferred," I said.

Robert nodded.

"Your sister found out about the mineral survey.""

Marcus looked stunned.

"How?""

"She worked in my office. She had access to the old records.""

"Then why did she tell everyone the property was worth six million?""

Robert gave a tired smile.

"Because six million is what the warehouse would be worth without the mineral rights.""

I looked at the survey again.

"And the mineral rights?""

"Those are controlled by the family trust.""

I sat down.

"So Vanessa transferred the warehouse property, hoping to control the land before anyone realized the mineral rights were separate.""

"Exactly.""

Marcus ran a hand through his hair.

"She thought she could steal the building and then claim the resources underneath it.""

Robert nodded.

"Your mother helped her.""

I looked at him.

"Does Diane know about the trust amendment?""

"Yes.""

"Then she knows the transfers can be challenged.""

"She does.""

Robert opened another folder.

Inside was a letter from a legal firm.

It was dated six months earlier.

The letter confirmed that I had been named temporary trustee because of my grandmother's previous connection to the family.

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me any of this before the acquisition?""

"Because I wanted to see whether your company was interested in the business itself. I didn't want you to think I was using Eleanor's kindness to influence you.""

I appreciated the honesty.

But I still had questions.

"Why didn't you tell Marcus?""

Robert looked at his son.

"Because I wanted him to build a life without worrying about the family business.""

Marcus laughed sadly.

"Well, that worked out.""

Robert's eyes filled.

"I know.""

For a moment, the room was quiet.

Then I noticed something strange in the architectural drawings.

A section of the warehouse had been marked with a red circle.

I pointed to it.

"What's this?""

Robert leaned closer.

"An underground access chamber.""

"Access to what?""

He hesitated.

"The original geological testing area.""

I studied the drawing.

"Does anyone still have access?""

Robert nodded.

"Only three people were given keys.""

"Who?""

"Me. Diane. And Vanessa.""

Marcus looked up.

"Why would Vanessa need a key?""

"She claimed she wanted to help organize the old records.""

I stared at the drawing.

"Has anyone checked whether the chamber is still intact?""

Robert shook his head.

"Not recently.""

I immediately called Rachel.

"Rachel, I need a property inspection at Williams Industrial. Today.""

"What are we looking for?""

"An underground access chamber beneath the warehouse. I want independent engineers, security personnel, and a full inventory of anything stored there.""

"Understood.""

"And Rachel?""

"Yes?""

"Nobody from the Williams family enters the property until we know what's inside.""

I ended the call.

Marcus looked at me.

"You think Vanessa took something?""

"I don't know.""

Robert's expression had changed.

He was staring at the architectural drawing.

Then he whispered:

"She may have taken the original mineral survey.""

I looked at him.

"Why is that important?""

"Because the original survey contains the exact location of the deposit. Without it, anyone attempting to extract the minerals could damage the entire underground formation.""

Marcus frowned.

"Could that really be worth twenty million?""

Robert nodded.

"Possibly more, depending on what an updated assessment reveals.""

I folded the drawing carefully.

"Then we need to find that survey.""

Before anyone could respond, a loud noise came from outside.

A truck had stopped near the loading entrance.

Two men climbed out.

One carried a toolbox.

The other held a clipboard.

Robert frowned.

"Who are they?""

Marcus walked toward the window.

Then his face changed.

"Those men work for Vanessa.""

I stepped beside him.

One of the men was unlocking the warehouse side entrance.

I immediately called security.

"There's an unauthorized entry attempt at the property. Send someone to the loading area.""

The security manager answered.

"On our way.""

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

"I'm going down there.""

I caught his arm.

"Wait.""

"That's my family's property.""

"And those men may be carrying out evidence.""

He looked at me.

Then he stopped.

A moment later, the security team arrived.

The two men attempted to leave.

They were stopped before reaching their truck.

Rachel called me almost immediately.

"Nia, we have a problem.""

"What happened?""

"One of the men was carrying a set of warehouse access keys.""

"Did you question him?""

"Not yet. But he has a work order signed by Vanessa.""

I looked at Robert.

His face had gone pale.

"What's the work order for?"" I asked.

Rachel hesitated.

"Removal of archived equipment from the underground chamber.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"What equipment?""

Rachel read the description.

"Old storage containers. Geological samples. Original testing materials.""

Robert suddenly gripped the edge of the table.

"She's destroying the evidence.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Rachel, stop everything. Nobody touches those containers.""

"Already done.""

Then Rachel added:

"There's something else. The work order was issued yesterday, but the chamber was opened three days ago.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Who opened it?""

Rachel checked the access log.

Her voice dropped.

"Diane Williams.""

Robert closed his eyes.

Marcus whispered, "Mom.""

I turned toward the warehouse window.

A black sedan had just entered the property.

The driver's door opened.

Diane stepped out.

But she wasn't alone.

A tall man in a dark suit walked around the vehicle and handed her a folder.

Robert stared at him.

Then he whispered a name.

"Richard Cole.""

I looked at him.

"Who is he?""

Robert's face had gone completely white.

"He's the attorney who drafted the original family trust.""

I frowned.

"Why would he be meeting Diane?""

Robert shook his head.

"Because he's supposed to be protecting the trust.""

I watched the two of them walk toward the warehouse.

Then Robert said something that made the room feel suddenly smaller.

"Unless he's the person who helped her steal it.""

And when Richard opened the folder, I saw the first page.

It wasn't a legal notice.

It was a document terminating my appointment as temporary trustee.

At the bottom was Robert's signature.

Only Robert hadn't signed it.

May you like

He was standing right beside me.

And he was looking at the paper as if he had just seen his own death certificate.
