Chapter 7: The Forged Signature That Exposed Everyone

Robert Williams stared at the document through the warehouse window.

His hands were shaking.

"That's my signature," he whispered.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Dad, you didn't sign that.""

"No.""

"Then they're trying to remove Nia from the trust.""

Robert nodded slowly.

"Richard knows exactly what he's doing.""

Outside, Diane stood beside the attorney, speaking quietly while Vanessa approached them from the warehouse entrance.

She looked directly at the office window.

Then she smiled.

It wasn't the confident smile of someone who believed she had won.

It was the smile of someone who thought nobody could stop her.

I picked up my phone.

"Rachel, I need the original trust documents, the amendment naming me temporary trustee, and every electronic communication involving Richard Cole.""

"Already collecting them.""

"Have our legal team come here immediately.""

"How soon?""

"Now.""

I ended the call.

Marcus looked at me.

"What happens if they succeed in removing you?""

"Then they'll have an easier time moving the property.""

"And the missing money?""

"They'll try to make it disappear.""

Robert lowered himself into his chair.

"Richard has been my attorney for twenty-two years. He handled my father's estate. He helped us expand the factory.""

I looked at him.

"Did you ever give him authority to amend the trust?""

"No.""

"Did you ever authorize the transfer of the warehouse?""

"No.""

"Then we have something to work with.""

Robert looked at me.

"You don't understand, Nia. Richard knows every weakness in our family. He knows where every document is stored. He knows which signatures the bank accepts.""

Marcus clenched his fists.

"Then we expose him.""

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We will. But we need evidence.""

At that moment, the office door opened.

A young security employee entered.

"Ms. Carter, the attorney and Mrs. Williams are requesting access to the building.""

I looked at him.

"Tell them they're not authorized to enter.""

He nodded and left.

Less than a minute later, Diane's voice echoed down the corridor.

"Robert! I know you're in there!""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Here we go.""

The office door opened again.

Diane entered without permission, followed by Richard and Vanessa.

Richard wore a charcoal suit and carried a black leather briefcase.

Diane looked directly at Robert.

"Why are you making this so difficult?""

Robert stood.

"Get out.""

She blinked.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Dad, don't embarrass yourself.""

Robert's face hardened.

"You stole from the company. You used your brother's identity. You transferred property without authorization. And now you're forging my signature?""

Diane's expression changed.

"Watch what you're accusing me of.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Mr. Williams, I suggest we keep this conversation professional.""

I looked at him.

"Then perhaps you should explain why you're carrying a document that supposedly removes me as trustee.""

Richard adjusted his cuff.

"The document was prepared following instructions from my client.""

"Which client?""

"Mrs. Williams.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"She doesn't own the trust.""

Diane immediately interrupted.

"I have managed this family's finances for decades.""

"That doesn't give you the right to forge signatures.""

Richard placed the document on the table.

"The authenticity of the signature is not something you are qualified to determine.""

Robert pointed at it.

"I never signed that.""

Richard remained calm.

"Your recollection may be affected by recent stress.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Don't you dare.""

Richard looked at him.

"Mr. Williams, this is a family matter.""

"No. It's fraud.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"You're repeating everything Nia tells you.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"At least she's telling me the truth.""

Vanessa's face reddened.

Diane slapped her handbag onto the table.

"Enough! I'm not going to stand here while this woman destroys everything your father built.""

I looked at her.

"You keep saying I'm destroying your family. But I've spent the last three days discovering what your family has done to itself.""

Diane stepped closer.

"You think you're untouchable because you have money?""

"No.""

I met her eyes.

"I think you're frightened because I have documents.""

For the first time, Diane had no immediate response.

Richard cleared his throat.

"Ms. Carter, I would strongly advise you not to interfere with the legal administration of this estate.""

I smiled.

"And I would strongly advise you to stop presenting forged documents.""

He closed his briefcase.

"Then perhaps we should let the courts decide.""

"Gladly.""

I turned toward the door.

"Rachel's bringing our legal team. They'll be here shortly.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Rachel Brooks?""

"Yes.""

He exchanged a quick glance with Diane.

It lasted less than a second.

But I noticed.

So did Marcus.

"Why did you look at Mom?"" he asked.

Richard ignored him.

Instead, he turned toward Robert.

"Your wife has done everything possible to protect this family. You should consider what will happen if you continue down this path.""

Robert looked at him.

"Are you threatening me?""

Richard picked up his briefcase.

"I'm reminding you of the consequences.""

Then he walked out.

Diane followed.

Vanessa lingered.

She looked at Marcus.

"You really think she's going to stay with you after all this?""

Marcus stared at her.

"Leave.""

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"You'll understand eventually.""

Then she walked away.

Twenty minutes later, Rachel arrived with Daniel and two forensic specialists.

The first thing Daniel did was examine the disputed trust amendment.

He compared the signature against Robert's verified documents.

After several minutes, he looked up.

"Mr. Williams, this is almost certainly a reproduction of your signature.""

Robert sat down.

"Can we prove it?""

Daniel nodded.

"With forensic examination, yes. But there's something else.""

He placed another document on the table.

It was a digital access report.

The disputed amendment had been uploaded through Richard Cole's legal office.

Rachel leaned forward.

"Can we trace the original file?""

"Possibly.""

One of the forensic specialists opened his laptop.

After several minutes, he turned the screen toward us.

The file history showed that the document had been created on Richard's office computer.

But the last modification had been made using a remote login.

The username was unfamiliar.

I leaned closer.

"Whose account is that?""

Rachel checked the access details.

Then her expression changed.

"It's registered to Michael Carter.""

I felt a cold wave move through my chest.

"Michael?""

"The former CFO," she replied.

I stared at the screen.

He had already been removed from our systems.

So how had he accessed Richard's office?

Daniel examined the timestamps.

"These records suggest Michael wasn't simply receiving money. He was actively helping prepare the fraudulent documents.""

Marcus shook his head.

"How far does this go?""

Nobody answered.

Then the forensic specialist opened another folder.

Inside were scanned copies of private emails between Michael, Richard, Diane, and Vanessa.

One message caught my attention.

It was from Diane.

The subject line read:

*AFTER MONDAY, THERE WILL BE NO WAY BACK.*

I opened it.

Diane had written that the acquisition needed to close before the trust amendment was challenged.

She also mentioned an additional payment to Richard.

But the final paragraph was what made me stop breathing.

Once the buyer assumes the liabilities, we can finally stop worrying about what happened to Eleanor Carter.

I stared at the screen.

My grandmother's name.

Why was she mentioned in an email about the Williams family?

I opened the attachment.

It was an old photograph.

My grandmother stood beside Robert Williams outside the original factory.

On the back, someone had written a date.

And underneath it were five words.

The original agreement belongs to Eleanor.

I turned toward Robert.

"What did my grandmother own?""

Robert looked at the photograph.

His eyes filled.

"She didn't just lend me money, Nia.""

I waited.

He swallowed.

"She owned half of the original property.""

The room went silent.

"Half?"" I repeated.

Robert nodded.

"Before the factory expanded, Eleanor invested in the land. The agreement gave her a fifty-percent interest in the original development.""

I looked at the trust documents.

"Then why isn't her name on the current ownership records?""

"Because she transferred her interest into a private family trust years ago.""

I stared at him.

"Whose family trust?""

Robert lowered his voice.

"Yours.""

I couldn't move.

My grandmother had never told me.

Then Robert continued.

"And Diane has been trying to erase that ownership interest for almost fifteen years.""

I looked at the email again.

The words suddenly made sense.

They weren't afraid of losing the company.

They were afraid of someone discovering who actually owned it.

And that someone was me.

Before I could ask another question, Rachel's phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then looked directly at me.

"Nia, the bank has just received an instruction to release the remaining warehouse funds.""

"From whom?""

Rachel swallowed.

"From someone claiming to represent the Carter family trust.""

I stood.

"Who?""

Rachel read the name.

"Eleanor Carter.""

My grandmother had been dead for six years.

And someone was using her identity.
