Chapter 5: The Betrayal Came From Inside My Company
At 9:30 that morning, I walked into the conference room at Carter Global Holdings.
Rachel was already waiting.
So were our general counsel, Daniel Price, and the head of internal security, Thomas Reed.
A large screen displayed the financial records connected to Williams Industrial Holdings.
I placed my handbag on the table.
"Tell me exactly what you've found.""
Rachel stood.
"We traced the offshore transfers through three holding companies. The final recipient is a private investment account.""
"Who owns it?""
Daniel answered.
"According to the preliminary registration documents, the account is controlled by an individual named Michael Carter.""
I frowned.
"Michael Carter?""
Rachel looked at me.
"He's your chief financial officer.""
I slowly sat down.
Michael had worked for me for nearly four years.
He had joined Carter Global when we were still operating out of a small rented office.
He had helped negotiate our first major contract.
He had attended my grandmother's memorial service.
I'd trusted him with financial records worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
And now his name was connected to money stolen from a company we were preparing to purchase.
"How much?"" I asked.
Daniel opened his folder.
"Approximately one-point-three million dollars.""
I stared at him.
"That's only what we've traced so far.""
"Correct.""
Rachel added, "The payments appear to have started shortly after the Williams family began experiencing financial difficulties.""
I leaned back.
"Has Michael been informed?""
"No," Thomas replied.
"We haven't approached him.""
"Good. Don't.""
Daniel looked concerned.
"We should consider contacting law enforcement immediately.""
"We will," I said.
"But first, I want the complete evidence preserved. Nobody deletes an email, changes a password, or moves a single document without authorization.""
Rachel nodded.
"I'll coordinate with the forensic team.""
I looked at the screen.
"Bring Michael in for a routine financial review. Don't accuse him of anything.""
Thomas raised an eyebrow.
"Do you want me present?""
"Yes. And make sure the meeting is documented.""
At 10:15, Michael entered the conference room.
He wore a navy suit and carried his usual leather folder.
"Morning, everyone.""
He smiled at me.
"Nia, I heard about the situation with Williams Industrial. Quite a mess.""
I watched him take his seat.
"Indeed.""
He opened his folder.
"Fortunately, we can still close the acquisition Monday if we structure the liabilities correctly.""
Rachel exchanged a glance with me.
I folded my hands.
"That's interesting.""
Michael looked up.
"Why?""
"Because we haven't decided whether we're proceeding.""
He gave a small laugh.
"Well, obviously, we'll need to be flexible.""
"Michael, have you ever worked with Vanessa Williams?""
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
"Vanessa? Not personally.""
"Have you ever received payments from Williams Industrial Holdings?""
He closed his folder.
"Nia, I handle thousands of transactions. I'd have to check.""
"Please do.""
He nodded.
"Of course.""
I slid a printed statement across the table.
It showed three transfers to an offshore company.
Michael glanced at the page.
Then he looked at me.
"Where did you get this?""
"That's not important.""
"Actually, it is. These records are confidential.""
I smiled.
"They belong to a company we're investigating.""
He leaned back.
"Investigating?""
Rachel spoke.
"Yes. We're conducting a forensic review of suspicious financial activity.""
Michael's face became unreadable.
"I see.""
I pointed to the first payment.
"Can you explain this?""
He studied the document.
Then he gave a small shrug.
"It appears to be a consulting payment.""
"To whom?""
"An external firm.""
"Which firm?""
He hesitated.
"I'd need to check.""
I looked directly at him.
"Michael, the company is registered under your name.""
Silence.
His fingers tightened around the folder.
Then he laughed.
"Nia, come on. You don't seriously think I'd risk my career over a few payments.""
I didn't answer.
He stood.
"This is getting uncomfortable.""
"Please sit down.""
"I have another meeting.""
Thomas moved slightly closer to the door.
Michael noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
"What's going on?""
Daniel placed a second document on the table.
It was a copy of an email recovered from the Williams company server.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was Michael.
The subject line read:
*OUR AGREEMENT.*
Michael stared at it.
Then he slowly lowered himself into his chair.
Rachel read the relevant paragraph aloud.
"Once the acquisition closes, Carter Global will assume the outstanding liabilities. The offshore account will be cleared, and both parties will receive their agreed compensation.""
Michael said nothing.
I looked at him.
"How long have you been working with Vanessa?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
He looked toward the window.
"Her family was desperate. The company was failing. They needed temporary financing.""
"By stealing money?""
"I didn't steal anything.""
"Then why was your name on the receiving account?""
He finally looked at me.
"Because Vanessa promised to repay it.""
I shook my head.
"With what?""
He didn't answer.
I leaned forward.
"Michael, you weren't protecting a struggling company. You were helping people hide missing assets and preparing to transfer their liabilities onto my company.""
His expression hardened.
"Your company? Nia, I helped build this business.""
"And I trusted you.""
He looked away.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Michael stood again.
"I'm leaving.""
Thomas stepped in front of him.
"Please remain seated.""
Michael's voice rose.
"You can't detain me!""
"We're not detaining you," Daniel replied.
"We're asking you to remain while we arrange the next steps with legal counsel.""
Michael turned toward me.
"You can't do this to me.""
I looked at him.
"You did this to yourself.""
He reached for his phone.
Thomas asked him to place it on the table.
Michael refused.
A brief argument followed before he finally put it down.
Within minutes, our legal team had secured the company records and notified the appropriate authorities.
The acquisition was formally suspended.
But the biggest surprise came later that afternoon.
I was reviewing the original property transfers when Rachel entered my office.
"Nia, we've found something.""
"What?""
She placed a document in front of me.
It was a copy of an old trust agreement.
"Your acquisition team requested additional ownership records from Williams Industrial. One of the documents was attached to an old estate filing.""
I scanned the first page.
The document had been signed eleven years earlier.
It established a family trust connected to the original factory property.
I frowned.
"Who created this?""
"Robert Williams.""
"And who are the beneficiaries?""
Rachel pointed to the second page.
My eyes moved down the list.
Robert Williams.
Diane Williams.
Vanessa Williams.
Then another name.
Marcus Williams.
I looked at the percentage allocation.
Marcus was entitled to a substantial portion of the company's original property interests.
But the next paragraph caught my attention.
The trust included a protection clause.
Any unauthorized transfer of the company's original assets would trigger an independent review of the ownership structure.
I looked up.
"Does this mean the transfers can be reversed?""
"Potentially. But there's another problem.""
Rachel turned to the final page.
A handwritten amendment had been added to the trust.
It was dated six months earlier.
The amendment stated that if Robert became incapacitated or was unable to manage the company, a temporary trustee would take control.
I read the trustee's name.
Then I read it again.
"Nia Carter?""
Rachel nodded.
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"Why am I named in this document?""
"That's what we need to establish.""
I picked up my phone and called Robert.
He answered after three rings.
"Hello, Nia.""
"Mr. Williams, I found the trust agreement.""
Silence.
Then he sighed.
"I was hoping you wouldn't find that yet.""
"Why am I named as the temporary trustee?""
Robert took a long breath.
"Because I asked for you.""
"Why?""
"Because you're the only person I know who has no reason to protect my wife or daughter.""
I looked at the document.
"How did you know I would be involved?""
"I didn't.""
"Then why me?""
His voice became quieter.
"Because your grandmother once helped me when nobody else would.""
I froze.
"My grandmother?""
"Yes. Eleanor Carter.""
I sat down slowly.
Robert continued.
"She gave me a loan when the factory was about to close. She refused to take interest. She told me that one day, if I ever had the chance, I should repay the kindness by protecting someone who deserved it.""
I swallowed.
"My grandmother never told me about that.""
"She wouldn't have. She wasn't the kind of woman who wanted recognition.""
I looked again at the trust.
"Mr. Williams, why didn't you tell Marcus?""
"Because I thought I could fix this without involving him.""
"And now?""
Robert's voice broke.
"Now my wife knows about the trust. She wants it destroyed.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Why?""
He hesitated.
Then he whispered:
"Because if the trust is activated, Vanessa loses control of the warehouse.""
"Who controls it now?""
"She does.""
"Who should legally control it?""
Robert took a breath.
"Marcus.""
I stared at the wall.
Then Robert said something that changed my understanding of the entire situation.
"There's one more reason Diane is desperate to stop the acquisition.""
"What reason?""
"Because the warehouse isn't worth six million dollars.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"It's worth closer to twenty million.""
My heart stopped.
"Twenty million?""
"Yes. And your grandmother knew exactly why it was valuable.""
Before I could ask another question, Robert added:
May you like
"Nia, there's something buried beneath that property.""
And suddenly, the missing money wasn't the biggest mystery anymore.
