Chapter 3: The Family Secret Behind the Six-Million-Dollar Transfer

Marcus didn't speak for almost a minute.

He stood in the middle of my living room, holding his phone as though it had suddenly become too heavy.

"That's impossible," he finally said.

I looked at him.

"Marcus...""

"No. I never signed anything. I never transferred property. I don't even own shares in my father's company.""

Rachel's voice came through the speaker.

"The property transfer lists you as a director of the receiving company.""

Marcus shook his head.

"What's the company called?""

Rachel checked the file.

"MW Property Investments LLC.""

He stared at the floor.

"MW?""

"Yes.""

He laughed bitterly.

"My father used to call me his little business partner. He said one day we'd build something together.""

I watched his expression.

"Have you ever heard that company name before?""

"No.""

Rachel interrupted.

"There's a registered address attached to it.""

I asked her to read it.

She did.

It was a small office building downtown.

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"I've never been there.""

"Do you recognize the registered agent?"" Rachel asked.

He closed his eyes.

"Read the name.""

"Vanessa Williams.""

Silence.

Marcus slowly sat down.

"She used my name.""

I didn't answer.

He looked at me.

"My own sister used my name.""

His voice cracked on the final word.

I wanted to comfort him.

But I also knew that sympathy wouldn't solve the problem.

"Marcus, we need to establish whether your signature was forged.""

Rachel cleared her throat.

"I've already requested copies of the original filings. There's another issue. The property transfer was completed two weeks ago.""

Marcus stood again.

"Two weeks ago?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't Dad tell me?""

"Perhaps he didn't know the transfer had been finalized," I said.

Marcus walked toward the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water.

His hands shook so badly that some spilled onto the counter.

He put the glass down.

"Can we go to my father's house?""

I checked the time.

It was almost two in the morning.

"Not tonight.""

"I need to talk to him.""

"Your father just told you something that could have serious legal consequences. We need to be careful.""

"That's my family, Nia.""

"And that's exactly why we need to be careful.""

He looked at me, frustrated.

For the first time since I'd known him, I saw anger in his eyes that wasn't directed at someone else.

"You're telling me to sit here while my sister steals six million dollars?""

"I'm telling you not to walk into a situation without knowing what you're walking into.""

He took a breath.

Then he nodded.

"You're right.""

I called Rachel again.

"Can you arrange an independent forensic review of the company's accounts first thing tomorrow?""

"Already working on it.""

"And find out whether the property transfer can be challenged.""

"Understood.""

"Also, freeze our acquisition process. No further payments, no closing documents, nothing.""

Rachel paused.

"There's a problem with that.""

"What problem?""

"Your purchase agreement includes a confidentiality clause. If the sellers discover we're investigating the transfers, they may attempt to move the remaining assets before we can protect the transaction.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Then we don't tell them what we've found.""

Rachel nodded.

"I'll handle it.""

After the call ended, Marcus remained silent.

I went into the kitchen and made coffee.

He followed me.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Did you know who my family was when you started dating me?""

I turned toward him.

"No.""

"Did you know about the company?""

"I knew the company existed. I didn't know it was connected to you until yesterday.""

He studied my face.

"You're telling the truth?""

I placed his coffee on the counter.

"Marcus, if I wanted your family's money, I wouldn't need to date you for eight months.""

He looked down.

"I'm sorry.""

I softened my voice.

"I know you're shocked.""

"No. I mean about everything. My mother.

Vanessa. The way they treated you.""

I leaned against the counter.

"Your mother made a decision about me before she knew anything about me. That's her choice.""

"But I should have stopped her sooner.""

"You tried.""

"Not enough.""

I didn't argue.

Because he was right about one thing.

He had spent years allowing his mother to control the atmosphere around him.

And perhaps he hadn't realized how much damage that had caused.

At 7:15 the next morning, Rachel called.

I was sitting at the dining table with Marcus when her name appeared.

"Morning," I answered.

"Do you have a minute?""

"Go ahead.""

"I've received the original property documents.""

"And?""

"Both transfers were authorized electronically. However, the digital signatures don't match the signatures in the company's verified records.""

Marcus leaned closer.

"Can you prove they were forged?""

"Not yet," Rachel replied.

"But we have enough evidence to request an immediate legal review.""

I asked about the remaining assets.

"There's something else," Rachel said.

"What?""

"Your boyfriend's sister has been withdrawing money from the company through her consulting firm. But some of the transfers were sent to another account.""

"Whose account?""

Rachel hesitated.

"An account registered to Diane Williams.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

I asked the question neither of us wanted to ask.

"How much?""

"Just over seven hundred thousand dollars.""

Marcus pushed his chair back.

"That's my mother's account?""

"Yes," Rachel replied.

He stood and walked away from the table.

I heard him mutter something under his breath.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

Mom.

He looked at me.

I nodded.

"Answer it.""

He put the call on speaker.

"Hello, Mom.""

Diane's voice was sharp.

"Where have you been?""

"At Nia's.""

A pause.

"You're still with that woman?""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Her name is Nia.""

"Don't correct me. Your sister told me everything.""

"What did she tell you?""

"That Nia is trying to buy your father's company. She thinks she can walk into our family and take everything we've built.""

Marcus stared at the phone.

"Mom, did you transfer the warehouse?""

Silence.

Then Diane laughed.

"What ridiculous nonsense is that?""

"Did you transfer it to Vanessa's company?""

"Your sister is helping your father.""

"Why is my name on the paperwork?""

Diane's voice hardened.

"Because you're family.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Marcus, you have no idea how complicated business can be.""

"Then explain it.""

She sighed dramatically.

"Your father has been making terrible decisions. Someone had to protect the family's assets.""

"By using my name?""

"Don't be childish.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Did I authorize those transfers?""

"Your father wanted you involved.""

"Did I sign anything?""

Diane didn't answer.

He looked at me.

I could see the realization spreading across his face.

"Mom, answer me.""

Finally, Diane said, "You need to come home.""

"I'm not coming anywhere until you explain what happened.""

Her voice dropped.

"Then perhaps you should ask your girlfriend why she's suddenly so interested in our business.""

Marcus shook his head.

"She didn't do anything.""

"She wants to destroy this family!""

"Mom, stop.""

Diane ignored him.

"Listen to me. You have until tonight to end this relationship and tell that woman to withdraw her offer.""

I went still.

Marcus stared at the phone.

"What?""

"Your father and I have already discussed it. If you stay with her, you will lose everything.""

Marcus's voice became quiet.

"What exactly do I have to lose?""

Diane gave a short, cold laugh.

"Your inheritance. Your position in this family. Your future.""

He looked down at the floor.

Then he answered.

"If my future depends on pretending you didn't use my name to steal company property, then I don't want it.""

Diane gasped.

"How dare you!""

Marcus ended the call.

For several seconds, the room was silent.

Then my phone vibrated.

Rachel had sent another message.

I opened the attachment.

It was an email recovered from the company's internal server.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was Diane.

The subject line read:

*MONDAY — MAKE SURE MARCUS SIGNS.*

I opened it.

There were only three paragraphs.

Vanessa had written that Marcus was the easiest person to manipulate because he trusted their mother.

She suggested telling him that the paperwork was for a family estate plan.

The final sentence made my stomach tighten.

Once he signs, everything will be legally protected. Nia won't be able to interfere, even if she becomes the buyer.

I read it twice.

Then I turned the laptop toward Marcus.

He read the email.

His face went completely still.

"She planned to make me sign something.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He scrolled to the bottom.

There was an attachment.

A document titled:

*PERSONAL GUARANTEE AND TRANSFER OF BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP.*

Marcus opened it.

His name was already typed into the signature field.

But there was something else.

The document contained a second signature.

Diane's.

And beneath it, a handwritten note:

If he refuses, remind him what happened to his father last time he challenged us.

Marcus stared at those words.

Then he looked at me.

"What does that mean?""

I had no answer.

Before I could call Rachel, my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Ms. Carter?""

"Speaking.""

"My name is Robert Williams. I'm Marcus's father.""

I straightened.

"Mr. Williams. Is everything all right?""

He sounded frightened.

"No. And I need you to listen carefully.""

I glanced at Marcus.

Robert continued.

"Your boyfriend's mother and sister are on their way to your house.""

My heart sank.

"Why?""

"Because they've discovered you have the documents.""

I looked toward the front windows.

A black SUV had just turned onto my street.

Robert whispered one final sentence.

"And Nia, whatever you do, don't let Vanessa inside. She has something that belongs to you.""

Marcus moved toward the window.

His face changed.

The SUV stopped outside my gate.

The passenger door opened.

Vanessa stepped out.

May you like

She was carrying a large envelope.

And she was smiling.
