Chapter 8: The Price of Every Lie

By noon, the Cole Foundation was facing an independent financial investigation.

Its board had suspended Adrian's executive authority and restricted access to its financial systems. No one had yet been convicted of wrongdoing, but the records Daniel supplied raised serious questions about years of transactions.

Adrian blamed Nia.

He called her repeatedly, sent messages accusing her of destroying his reputation, and finally appeared outside her apartment.

Nia refused to let him inside.

"You owe me a conversation," he said through the closed door.

"I gave you ten years of conversations."

"You don't understand the consequences of what you're doing."

"Then explain them without threatening me."

Silence followed.

Finally, Adrian said, "If the foundation collapses, hundreds of people could lose their jobs."

Nia leaned against the door.

"Then tell the investigators the truth and help recover the money."

"You'd really do this to me?"

She closed her eyes.

There it was again.

Not an apology.

Not remorse.

Only the assumption that she owed him protection.

"I'm not doing this to you, Adrian. I'm refusing to do it for you."

He left without another word.

That afternoon, Nia met Vanessa at Rachel's office.

Vanessa looked exhausted. Her expensive dress had been replaced by jeans and a plain sweater. Without the confident smile she had worn at the gala, she seemed younger and far less certain of herself.

"I know you have every reason to hate me," Vanessa said.

Nia sat across from her.

"I don't need to hate you. I need you to tell the truth."

Vanessa placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of the pregnancy records, messages from Adrian, and a laboratory report confirming that the paternity result he'd shown her had not been issued by the laboratory.

"He told me he had proof," Vanessa explained. "He said he wanted me to feel secure before he announced the pregnancy."

"Did he ask you to help move money?"

Vanessa nodded.

"He said the company was a temporary holding account. I signed documents because I believed him. When I discovered the transfers were connected to the foundation, I tried to withdraw from the arrangement."

"What happened?"

"He threatened to expose private messages and accuse me of stealing the money."

Rachel took notes.

"We'll need the original messages and a complete account of your involvement. Cooperating doesn't automatically absolve you, but it will help establish what happened."

Vanessa looked down at her stomach.

"I don't even know if Adrian is the father."

Nia's expression softened slightly.

"Then get an independent paternity test when your doctor says it's appropriate. Don't let Adrian tell you what the results mean."

Vanessa nodded through her tears.

"I thought if I gave him a child, he'd finally choose me."

Nia remembered the way Vanessa had raised the ultrasound photograph in the ballroom.

"You shouldn't have humiliated me," she said.

"I know."

"You could have told me the truth."

"I was afraid he'd leave me with nothing."

Nia held her gaze.

"And instead, you helped him make me believe I had nothing."

Vanessa lowered her head.

There was no easy forgiveness between them.

Only the possibility of telling the truth.

Later that evening, Rachel received a call from the forensic accountants.

They had traced a substantial portion of the missing money to a property purchased through a private company. The title records identified Adrian as the beneficial owner.

But the property had been purchased under a different name.

Nia stared at the document.

"Whose name?"

Rachel turned the page.

NIA COLE.

Adrian had used her identity to purchase the property.

And the mortgage documents suggested he had intended to leave her responsible for the debt.

Nia's phone vibrated.

A message from Adrian appeared.

You wanted the truth. Come to the house where your father died. Come alone, and I'll tell you everything.

Rachel immediately shook her head.

"You're not going anywhere alone."

Nia stared at the message.

She had avoided her father's old house since his death.

Now she understood why Adrian had chosen it.

Whatever he had hidden there, he was desperate to retrieve it.

And this time, Nia intended to bring witnesses.
