Chapter 1 The Toast That Destroyed Everything
“Adrian and I are having a baby.”
The words landed harder than the sound of the champagne glass shattering beside Nia’s feet.
For ten years, Nia Cole had believed she knew exactly who her husband was. She knew the way he hummed while making coffee before sunrise. She knew the small scar above his eyebrow from a childhood accident. She knew the look he gave her whenever he promised, “You’re the only person in this world who truly knows me.”
She never imagined that the person standing across a Manhattan ballroom under crystal chandeliers would be a stranger wearing her husband’s face.
The charity gala was supposed to be the proudest night of Adrian’s career. The room glittered with wealthy donors, celebrities, and business executives. Marble floors reflected golden light from the chandeliers above. Servers moved silently through the crowd carrying champagne trays while a string quartet played near the entrance.
Nia had spent three hours getting ready.
Her black evening gown was simple but elegant, the kind of dress Adrian always said made her look “untouchable.”
Now it was covered in a spreading red stain.
Vanessa stood inches away from her, a smug smile on her face, one hand holding an ultrasound photo and the other still gripping an empty wine glass.
The guests around them stopped pretending not to watch.
A woman near the bar whispered, “Did she really just do that?”
Another guest covered her mouth.
Nia didn’t move.
She looked down at the wine dripping from the fabric.
A tiny drop slid from the edge of the stain onto the marble floor.
Then she looked back up.
Vanessa tilted the ultrasound photo toward the crowd like she was announcing an award.
“Adrian and I are having a baby,” Vanessa repeated, louder this time.
Adrian stood beside her in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.
And he smiled.
Not nervously.
Not apologetically.
He smiled like he had already won.
Nia stared at him, waiting.
Waiting for him to say something.
Anything.
“Adrian,” she whispered.
He didn’t look away.
“Nia, don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”
Her heart tightened.
The man who once held her hand through her father’s funeral was standing beside another woman while everyone watched her humiliation.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You should have known eventually,” she said.
Nia’s eyes moved toward her.
“Known what?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“That Adrian was never going to choose you.”
A few guests shifted uncomfortably.
Adrian adjusted his cufflinks.
“Vanessa,” he said, but his voice carried no warning.
Only irritation.
Nia noticed.
That hurt more than the wine.
Evelyn Cole, Adrian’s mother, approached from behind the crowd.
She wore a deep purple gown and carried herself like royalty. Even at nearly seventy years old, she controlled every room she entered.
Her eyes moved from the stain on Nia’s dress to Vanessa’s ultrasound photo.
Then she looked at Nia.
“Leave before you embarrass this family.”
The words were calm.
Almost rehearsed.
Nia slowly turned toward her mother-in-law.
“Embarrass this family?”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Yes. This is a celebration for Adrian’s future. Not a place for emotional scenes.”
Nia looked around the ballroom.
Hundreds of people watching.
Hundreds of people seeing exactly what kind of family this was.
She turned back to Adrian.
“You’re not going to say anything?”
Adrian sighed.
“I think Vanessa has made herself clear.”
Nia studied his face.
For years, she had believed she could read every emotion he had.
Tonight, she realized she had only been reading what he wanted her to see.
Vanessa lifted the ultrasound again.
“Maybe now everyone understands.”
Nia’s gaze dropped to the photo.
Something about the confidence in Vanessa’s hand bothered her.
Not the pregnancy.
Not the betrayal.
The certainty.
Like Vanessa knew something Nia didn’t.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You need to go home.”
Nia almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, she reached into her purse.
Slowly.
Calmly.
She pulled out her smartphone.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please. Are you recording this?”
“No,” Nia said.
Her voice was quiet.
That made the room even quieter.
“I’m showing you something.”
Adrian’s smile faded slightly.
“What are you talking about?”
Nia unlocked her phone.
Her fingers did not shake.
She opened a saved medical document.
Then she looked directly at him.
“I was waiting for you to say that.”
Adrian frowned.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“What exactly are you implying?”
Nia didn’t answer.
She simply turned the phone around.
And for the first time that night, Adrian Cole looked afraid.
Because the truth on that screen wasn’t something anyone in the room expected.
And when Adrian read the first line, the color slowly disappeared from his face.
“ADRIAN COLE — FERTILITY PROCEDURE — CONFIRMED.”
Nobody spoke.
Not Vanessa.
Not Evelyn.
Not Adrian.
The music continued playing in the background.
The champagne continued flowing.
But the entire ballroom had changed.
May you like
Adrian stared at the phone.
Nia watched him carefully.
