Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nia read the message three times.
"Who is supposed to be dead?" she asked.
Evelyn's face drained of color.
"No one. You've misunderstood."
"Then why did you say that?"
"Because you're exhausted, and someone is manipulating you."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Give me the phone."
Nia slipped it into her purse.
"Touch me again, and every person in this room will know exactly what kind of man you are."
He stopped.
Rachel immediately arranged for the original clinic records to be secured and advised Nia not to contact the unknown sender until they could establish the person's identity.
But Nia couldn't ignore the reference to her father.
The next morning, she went to Meridian Bank with Rachel.
The safe deposit box had been opened only twice since her father's death. One visit was recorded under the estate administrator's name.
The other bore Adrian's signature.
Nia stared at the register.
"He told me he'd never been here."
Rachel photographed the entry.
"Let's see what's inside before we draw conclusions."
The bank manager unlocked the box in a private room.
Inside lay a leather notebook, a sealed envelope, and a small digital recorder.
Nia's hands trembled as she picked up the envelope.
Her father's handwriting covered the front.
For Nia. Open only when the truth can no longer be hidden.
She broke the seal.
The letter was brief.
My darling girl,
If you're reading this, someone has finally forced you to question the people you trusted. Do not let anyone convince you that protecting a family means protecting its lies.
The notebook contains the original records of a financial arrangement involving Adrian Cole and Evelyn. I refused to approve the final transfer. If the money moved anyway, it was without my consent.
There is one person who can explain why.
Find Daniel Mercer.
Nia looked at Rachel.
"Who is Daniel Mercer?"
Rachel's expression changed.
"He was the former chief financial officer of the Cole Foundation. He disappeared after an internal investigation five years ago."
"Disappeared?"
"He resigned, sold his house, and left New York. There were rumors of fraud, but no public charges."
Nia picked up the recorder.
A label on the back bore the date of her father's final hospital admission.
She pressed play.
Her father's voice filled the room, weak but unmistakable.
"Nia, if you've found this, then I failed to protect you from Adrian."
She covered her mouth.
"I discovered that money from your inheritance was being moved through accounts connected to the Cole Foundation. Evelyn insisted it was a temporary loan. Adrian promised to return every dollar."
A pause followed, accompanied by a faint rustling sound.
"Then I discovered the payments were connected to a private medical arrangement. I confronted them. Adrian told me that if I exposed the truth, he would make sure you lost everything."
Nia's eyes filled with tears.
Her father had known.
He had tried to warn her.
The recording continued.
"But there's something else. The documents I signed were not the documents they presented to me. Someone replaced the final pages."
Rachel leaned closer to the recorder.
Then her father's voice dropped to a whisper.
"The person who helped them wasn't Evelyn."
A loud knock interrupted the recording.
The bank manager opened the door.
A security guard stood behind him.
"Ms. Cole, I'm sorry to interrupt. Someone has arrived claiming to be a representative of your late father's estate. He says he has legal authority to remove everything in that box."
Nia stood abruptly.
"Who?"
The guard checked his notes.
"Mr. Adrian Cole."
Rachel looked at Nia.
"He must not have known you were coming."
Nia closed her fingers around the notebook.
"Then let's find out what he was so desperate to take."
Outside the private room, Adrian was already waiting.
And beside him stood a man Nia recognized from an old family photograph.
May you like
Daniel Mercer.
The man who had supposedly disappeared five years earlier.
