Chapter 4: The Test That Changed Everything

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Vanessa stood beneath the chandeliers, trembling as she stared at the ultrasound image.

Adrian looked furious.

"You're lying."

"I'm not!" Vanessa cried. "The doctor called me. He said my records didn't match the results stored in the clinic's system."

"Then call him back."

"I did. He refused to speak while you were listening."

Adrian reached for her phone.

Vanessa pulled it away.

"Don't touch me!"

For once, nobody rushed to defend him.

Nia watched the confrontation with a strange sense of detachment. Ten years of marriage had taught her to recognize Adrian's different faces: the charming executive, the devoted husband, the wounded man who needed reassurance.

Tonight, she was seeing the one beneath them all.

A man terrified of losing control.

Rachel guided Nia toward a quieter corner of the ballroom.

"We need to be careful," she said. "An ultrasound photograph alone cannot establish paternity, and an unexplained discrepancy doesn't prove anyone deliberately switched records."

"I know."

"Then don't let Adrian provoke you into making accusations we can't substantiate."

Nia nodded.

She wanted answers, not another public spectacle.

Across the room, Evelyn was speaking urgently into her phone.

Nia caught only fragments.

"...the original agreement..."

"...before the audit begins..."

Then Evelyn noticed Nia watching and immediately ended the call.

"Who were you talking to?" Nia asked.

"My attorney."

"About the clinic?"

"About protecting this family."

Nia gave her a cold look.

"You keep using that phrase as if it excuses everything."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"You don't understand the sacrifices I've made for my son."

"Then tell me the truth."

Evelyn's eyes filled with something that looked almost like regret.

"Adrian was desperate three years ago. His medical condition threatened his future, and he was terrified that you would leave him if you knew the full truth."

"So you helped him lie to me?"

"I helped him survive."

"By turning me into the only person in this family who didn't know what was happening?"

Evelyn looked away.

Before she could answer, Vanessa returned from the corridor with her phone pressed to her ear.

"The doctor is coming," she announced.

Adrian grabbed his jacket.

"We're leaving."

"No," Vanessa said. "You can leave. I'm staying."

He stared at her.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

"For the first time in my life, I think I do."

Twenty minutes later, a middle-aged physician entered the ballroom with a security officer. He introduced himself as Dr. Samuel Hayes and asked to speak privately with Nia, Vanessa, and their attorneys.

Adrian attempted to follow them.

The security officer blocked his path.

Inside a private meeting room, Dr. Hayes placed two sealed medical reports on the table.

"The original records have been preserved," he explained. "I cannot determine paternity from the documents available tonight. That requires appropriate testing. But I can confirm that a request was made to amend Vanessa's file."

"Who made it?" Nia asked.

Dr. Hayes hesitated.

"The request was submitted using credentials assigned to a clinic administrator. However, the supporting instructions came from an outside account."

Rachel leaned forward.

"Whose account?"

The doctor turned over the second report.

The name printed beneath the authorization was not Adrian's.

It was the name of Nia's father, who had died six years earlier.

Nia stared at the page.

"That's impossible."

Dr. Hayes looked at her gravely.

May you like

"Your father's identity was used to authorize the original payment."

And suddenly, Nia realized that Adrian's betrayal might have begun long before their marriage ever fell apart.
