Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Medical Record

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Medical Record
Adrian stared at the words on Nia’s phone as if the screen had become a loaded gun.
“Where did you get that?” he demanded.
Nia slipped one hand around the stem of a fresh champagne glass a passing waiter had left on a nearby table. She didn’t drink. She simply watched her husband struggle to understand why the woman he had humiliated was no longer crying.
“Answer me, Nia!” Adrian snapped.
For the first time that evening, his voice cracked.
Vanessa stepped between them, clutching the ultrasound photograph against her chest.
“What is this supposed to prove?” she demanded. “Adrian and I are having a baby. A piece of paper doesn't change that.”
Nia turned toward her.
“Then you won't mind explaining something.”
She tapped the screen and enlarged the document.
“Three years ago, Adrian underwent a procedure that made natural conception impossible. The specialist confirmed it. The follow-up report confirmed it. And Adrian signed the consent form himself.”
A murmur swept through the ballroom.
One of the guests lowered his champagne glass.
Another quietly took out her phone.
Adrian grabbed Nia’s wrist.
“Turn that off!”
Nia looked down at his hand.
“Let go of me.”
Something in her voice made him release her.
Evelyn Cole moved forward, her purple gown sweeping across the marble floor.
“This is a private family matter,” she announced. “Everyone should return to the celebration.”
Nobody moved.
A prominent Manhattan attorney standing near the stage folded his arms.
“Evelyn, I think we'd all like to understand what we're witnessing.”
Evelyn's eyes flashed.
“And who exactly invited you to investigate my son?”
“The same person who invited the press to this gala,” he replied calmly. “Your son, as I recall.”
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Adrian turned back to Nia.
“You had no right to access my medical records.”
“You're right,” she answered. “I didn't access them illegally. You gave me the records yourself.”
He froze.
Three years earlier, Adrian had returned from a private clinic after a medical emergency. He had asked Nia to organize his insurance documents while he recovered. Among the papers was a signed report from a fertility specialist.
She remembered the conversation as clearly as if it had happened yesterday.
Adrian had sat on their bedroom floor, his head in his hands.
“The doctor says I may never be able to have children,” he had whispered.
Nia had knelt beside him.
“Then we'll find another way,” she'd promised.
He had pulled her into his arms and kissed her forehead.
“You're the only person who could ever make me feel like I'm still enough.”
Now, beneath the glittering chandeliers, Nia looked at the man who had once said those words.
“You told me you were afraid I'd leave you,” she said quietly. “I told you I wasn't going anywhere.”
Adrian swallowed.
“Nia, please. We can discuss this at home.”
“Home?” She almost smiled. “You mean the apartment you emptied last week?”
His expression changed.
Vanessa looked sharply at him.
“What is she talking about?”
Nia answered before he could.
“Perhaps you should ask Adrian why he transferred our joint savings into a company registered under your name.”
Vanessa's lips parted.
“That isn't true.”
“Then check your bank account.”
Vanessa immediately pulled out her phone. Her fingers moved across the screen, and within seconds, the smug confidence vanished from her face.
“Adrian,” she whispered. “You said that money was yours.”
He reached for her arm.
“Not here.”
“You said it was an investment account!”
“Vanessa, stop talking.”
She jerked away from him.
For the first time, the two people who had stood together to destroy Nia were looking at each other like strangers.
Nia watched them silently.
She had discovered the financial transfers two weeks earlier. She had also discovered that Adrian had been planning to file for divorce after the gala, leaving her with debts she hadn't known existed.
But she hadn't confronted him.
Not yet.
She had spent ten years learning how to love Adrian Cole.
The last two weeks had taught her how to investigate him.
Evelyn stepped close enough that only Nia could hear her next words.
“You think you've won something tonight?”
Nia met her gaze.
“No. I think I've finally stopped losing.”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you've disturbed.”
Before Nia could respond, Adrian's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.
Then all the blood drained from his face.
