Chapter 3

Grant came to the hospital the next morning.

He brought flowers.

White lilies.

My favorite flowers.

I almost laughed.

He walked into my room wearing concern like an expensive coat.

“Claire,” he said softly. “Thank God you’re awake.”

I stared at him.

He kissed the air near my cheek.

“I was terrified.”

“No,” I said.

His smile tightened.

“What?”

“You were in the hallway signing divorce papers.”

Grant looked toward Amanda.

“I told you not to upset her.”

Amanda stood.

“Mr. Holloway, your wife knows what you did.”

He turned back to me.

“Claire, it was complicated.”

“You said you were no longer my husband while I was dying.”

“I was under pressure.”

“You left our babies.”

“They have nurses.”

My whole body went cold.

“They have a mother,” I said. “And they had a father who chose an elevator over them.”

Grant’s face hardened.

That was the real man.

The man I had spent eight years trying not to see.

“I built everything we have,” he said.

“No,” I answered. “My father financed what you built.”

His eyes narrowed.

Amanda placed the prenup amendment on the table.

Grant read it.

The color drained from his face.

“This is ridiculous.”

“It is enforceable,” Amanda said.

He looked at me with anger.

“You would use your father’s money against me?”

I looked at my children.

“You used my near-death to get rid of me.”

Grant left without another word.

That afternoon, Amanda froze the accounts connected to my family trust.

Within hours, Grant’s company began calling.

His investors wanted answers.

May you like

His board wanted an emergency meeting.

And Sienna, the woman he thought was waiting for him, began asking questions too.
