Chapter 1

My name is Claire Holloway.

The night my heart stopped after giving birth to triplets, my husband used the hospital hallway to end our marriage.

I did not see it happen.

I was unconscious in the ICU.

Machines breathed for me.

Doctors fought to keep me alive after an emergency C-section became a nightmare no mother should face.

My three babies survived.

Two girls and a boy.

But I almost did not.

Later, a nurse named Diane told me what happened outside my room.

Grant stood in the corridor wearing a tailored gray suit.

He looked perfect.

Controlled.

Untouched.

His lawyer held divorce papers.

“Mr. Holloway,” the lawyer said, “your wife is critical. Are you certain this cannot wait?”

Grant took the papers.

He signed every page.

Then he asked, “How quickly can this be finalized?”

A doctor came out of the ICU and told him I needed authorization for additional treatment.

Grant closed the folder.

“I am no longer her husband,” he said.

The doctor stared at him.

Grant checked his watch.

“Update the records.”

Then he walked toward the elevator.

His phone buzzed.

A message from another woman appeared.

Is it done?

Grant smiled.

Yes.

That was what he wrote.

That was what he believed.

He thought he had removed a sick wife from his life.

He thought I would never wake up.

He thought my silence meant he had won.

But even before I opened my eyes, Grant had made a mistake.

He had signed the papers without reading one hidden clause in the agreement.

May you like

A clause my father had insisted on years before.

A clause that would make every lie Grant told cost him everything.
