Chapter 9: The Truth About Grace
The conference room emptied slowly.
Richard escorted the registry representative downstairs while James remained with Robert and Danielle.
Ethan sat at the far end of the table.
Nobody spoke to him.
Danielle looked at the document again.
Grace Brooks.
Her newborn daughter had somehow become a beneficiary of a trust established years before she was born.
“James,” Robert said, “explain exactly what we're looking at.””
James removed his glasses.
“The document presented as the original trust has been altered. The version dated six years ago is not the same version stored in our independent archive.””
“Who altered it?””
“We don't know yet.””
“And Grace?””
James turned toward Danielle.
“Her name was inserted into a later amendment. The amendment appears to create a separate beneficial interest for her.””
Danielle looked confused.
“Why would someone put my baby's name into a trust without telling me?””
James hesitated.
“Because whoever did this may have wanted to use her legal status to trigger a specific provision.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Which provision?””
James pointed toward a paragraph.
“There's a clause allowing a trustee to exercise temporary voting authority if the primary beneficiary is deemed unable to act independently.””
Danielle stared at the page.
“I'm perfectly capable of making my own decisions.””
“I know. But the language is vague.””
Robert's jaw tightened.
“Who decides whether she's unable to act?””
James looked at Ethan.
“The designated trustee.””
Danielle turned.
Ethan looked down.
Robert's voice became cold.
“You were supposed to protect her interests.””
“I know.””
“Instead, you allowed someone to create a clause that could be used to take away her rights.””
Ethan rubbed his eyes.
“I didn't write that amendment.””
“But you knew it existed?””
“No.””
Danielle stood.
“Then how did my daughter's name get there?””
James answered carefully.
“The amendment could have been created using information from the original trust, then submitted through an authorized account.””
Robert looked toward Richard's empty chair.
“Peter Lawson had access.””
“Yes,” James replied.
“But we still need to establish who instructed him.””
Ethan suddenly spoke.
“Charles.””
Everyone turned.
Ethan took a deep breath.
“Charles wanted the trust structure changed because he couldn't acquire enough shares through a conventional purchase. He believed that if he could obtain temporary control of the voting rights, he could force a restructuring of the company.””
Robert stared at him.
“And you helped him.””
“I helped with the initial negotiations. I didn't know about the forged documents.””
Danielle's voice was quiet.
“Why did you keep going?””
Ethan looked at her.
“Because Charles promised me a position in the new company.””
Robert laughed bitterly.
“There it is.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“I thought I could secure a better future for myself. I thought I could negotiate a favorable arrangement without hurting anyone.””
“You were willing to gamble with my daughter's future for a position?””
Ethan's eyes filled.
“I know what I did.””
Danielle looked away.
She couldn't bear to hear another apology.
Her father walked to the window.
For a moment, he looked older than she had ever seen him.
Then he turned.
“James, I want every version of the trust examined. Every electronic signature. Every communication. I want to know who created the amendment and who instructed the registry to accept it.””
James nodded.
“I'll coordinate with the forensic team.””
“And contact the authorities if the evidence supports criminal fraud.””
“Understood.””
After James left, Danielle picked up Grace.
The baby opened her eyes and looked vaguely toward the ceiling.
Danielle smiled despite everything.
“Hello, little girl.””
Grace stretched one tiny hand.
Danielle kissed it.
Robert approached.
“Sweetheart, I need to tell you something.””
She looked up.
“What?””
“Six years ago, when we established the trust, I wanted to make sure you would always have financial independence.””
“I know.””
“But I never intended for Ethan to have permanent control over your shares.””
“Then why did you trust him?””
Robert looked down.
“Because I considered him family.””
Danielle nodded slowly.
“I did too.””
Robert sat beside her.
“I should have been more careful.””
“You can't control what other people do.””
“No. But I can control who I allow near you.””
Danielle looked at Grace.
“Then make sure she grows up knowing that trust is something people earn.””
Robert placed his hand over hers.
“I promise.””
A knock interrupted them.
Richard entered carrying a laptop.
“Robert, we found something.””
Robert stood.
“What?””
“The amendment was uploaded from a device registered to the family office. But the digital signature wasn't generated by Peter's account.””
“Whose was it?””
Richard opened the laptop.
“An external authorization token was used.””
Robert frowned.
“Whose token?””
Richard hesitated.
“Yours.””
Silence.
Danielle stared at her father.
Robert stepped closer to the screen.
“That isn't possible.””
Richard nodded.
“I know. The token was reported missing several weeks ago.””
Robert looked sharply at him.
“When?””
“Three weeks ago, according to the internal security report.””
“Who reported it?””
Richard checked.
“Ethan.””
Everyone turned toward Ethan.
He stood abruptly.
“I reported a missing token. I didn't use it.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I thought it had been deactivated.””
Richard shook his head.
“It wasn't.””
Robert looked toward the laptop.
“Who accessed the token?””
Richard clicked on a file.
“We traced the access to a private terminal inside the hotel's executive office.””
Danielle frowned.
“The hotel?””
Richard nodded.
“More specifically, the office assigned to the regional director.””
Peter Lawson.
Robert's expression hardened.
“Where is Peter now?””
“He hasn't returned to the hotel since yesterday.””
“Find him.””
Richard nodded.
But before he could leave, Danielle's phone rang.
The number was unknown.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
“Miss Brooks, my name is Samuel Price. I'm a former security contractor for Harrington Capital.””
Danielle looked at her father.
“What do you want?””
“I know what's happening with your family's trust.””
“Who gave you my number?””
“Someone who believes you deserve to know the truth.””
Robert moved closer.
Danielle put the call on speaker.
Samuel continued.
“Charles Harrington didn't create this plan alone. Peter Lawson handled the hotel records, but someone else supplied the original trust documents.””
“Who?””
There was a pause.
Then Samuel spoke.
“Your father's personal assistant.””
Robert froze.
“That's impossible,” he said.
Samuel continued.
“Her name is Laura Bennett. She has been working with Charles for almost a year.””
Robert shook his head.
“Laura has worked for me for twelve years.””
“That's why she had access to your private files.””
Danielle felt cold.
“Why are you telling us this?””
“Because I helped arrange the document transfer. I thought it was a routine acquisition matter until I saw the forged signatures.””
“Where is Laura now?”” Robert demanded.
Samuel hesitated.
“She left the country this morning.””
Robert's face tightened.
“Where?””
“London. But before she left, she sent Charles a message saying the original trust documents were no longer safe.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Do you have proof?””
“Yes. I have copies of the emails, payment records, and an audio recording.””
Robert leaned closer to the phone.
“Send everything to our legal team.””
“I will. But there's something else.””
“What?””
Samuel's voice dropped.
“Charles isn't trying to take your daughter's shares anymore.””
Danielle looked at her father.
“Then what does he want?””
Samuel answered slowly.
“He wants custody of the trust's original beneficiary records. Because those records contain information that could destroy the Brooks family.””
Robert's face went completely still.
“What information?””
“The identity of the person who originally funded the trust.””
Danielle looked at him.
“Dad, who funded it?””
Robert didn't answer.
Samuel continued.
“Mr. Brooks, there's something you need to understand. The original trust wasn't funded with company money.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“It was funded by someone outside the family.””
Danielle felt her heart begin to race.
“Who?””
Samuel paused.
Then he delivered the revelation.
“Your daughter isn't the only Brooks beneficiary listed in the original records.””
Robert slowly looked toward Danielle.
Samuel continued.
“There's another child. An older beneficiary whose identity was deliberately concealed.””
Danielle's arms tightened around Grace.
“What child?””
The call disconnected.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Robert looked at Richard.
“Get me the original beneficiary records.””
Richard nodded.
But Ethan suddenly stood.
“Robert, don't.””
Robert turned.
“Why?””
Ethan's face was filled with fear.
“Because if you open those records, you'll discover why Charles has been trying to get his hands on them for six years.””
Danielle stared at him.
“Ethan, what are you hiding?””
Ethan looked at her.
Then, finally, he whispered the words that changed everything.
“The other beneficiary is your brother.””
Danielle stopped breathing.
She had never had a brother.
At least, that was what her father had always told her.
Robert looked toward the door.
And before anyone could ask another question, his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a name he hadn't seen in twenty-seven years.
*Michael Brooks.*
His missing son.

And the voice on the other end said:
“Dad, I think it's time you told Danielle why you let everyone believe I was dead.””
