Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Hotel
Marcus stared at Richard.
“I'm sorry?””
Richard didn't repeat himself.
Instead, he turned toward Danielle.
“Miss Brooks, would you prefer to sit somewhere private while we sort this out?””
Danielle glanced at the velvet seating area.
“No. I'd rather stay here. Everyone saw what happened. Everyone should hear what happened next.””
Richard nodded.
“Of course.””
Victoria let out a short laugh.
“This is ridiculous. Richard, I've known you for years. You know I wouldn't lie about something like this.””
Richard looked at her.
“Then the security footage should be very helpful.””
Victoria's cheeks flushed.
“You're taking her side?””
“I'm taking the side of establishing what happened.””
“She's obviously playing some kind of game.””
Danielle adjusted Grace's blanket.
“I haven't asked anyone for anything except basic respect.””
Victoria pointed a manicured finger at her.
“You should be careful with your accusations.””
Danielle looked directly at her.
“You slapped me. That's not an accusation. It's what you did.””
A young receptionist named Emily stood behind the desk, her hands clasped tightly.
She had watched the entire incident.
She had also watched Marcus ignore Danielle's explanation.
Richard noticed her expression.
“Emily, did you witness the confrontation?””
Emily looked at Marcus.
He gave her a warning glance.
“Mr. Collins, I was at the desk,” she said carefully.
“Then tell me what you saw.””
Marcus interrupted.
“Emily isn't involved in this matter.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“I'll decide who is involved.””
Emily took a breath.
“The woman in pink walked toward Miss Brooks. Miss Brooks was standing near the seating area. I didn't see her touch Mrs. Harrington.””
Victoria spun around.
“You little liar!””
Emily flinched.
Richard stepped between them.
“Mrs. Harrington, you will not intimidate my employees.””
“I pay a fortune to stay here!””
“And that does not give you permission to strike someone.””
For the first time, the people watching began to whisper openly.
Victoria looked around the lobby.
She had expected everyone to support her. She was accustomed to being recognized, greeted by name, and escorted to private dining rooms.
She had never imagined that a receptionist would contradict her.
Or that a hotel executive would defend the young mother.
Marcus approached Richard.
“Sir, perhaps we should discuss this privately.””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Not until you explain why you attempted to remove the victim instead of addressing the assault.””
“I was trying to protect the hotel's reputation.””
Richard stared at him.
“You think throwing out a woman holding a newborn protects our reputation?””
Marcus looked down.
Victoria shook her head.
“This is unbelievable.””
Richard's assistant, a woman named Helen Carter, approached with a tablet.
“Mr. Collins, I've contacted corporate security. They're pulling the relevant camera recordings.””
“Good. Also, contact the ownership office.””
Marcus stiffened.
“Why would ownership need to be involved?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because this situation is no longer a routine guest complaint.””
Danielle shifted Grace gently against her shoulder.
“Mr. Collins, I don't want to make this more complicated than it needs to be.””
Richard softened.
“Miss Brooks, you haven't made anything complicated.””
“I just wanted somewhere quiet to feed my daughter.””
“I understand.””
“I didn't even know that woman was upset with me until she slapped me.””
Richard nodded.
“We'll establish exactly what happened.””
Then the glass doors opened again.
A man entered, carrying no briefcase and accompanied by no assistants.
He wore a dark navy coat over a white shirt. His silver hair was slightly disheveled, as though he'd left somewhere in a hurry.
Danielle's face changed immediately.
“Dad.””
The man crossed the lobby in long strides.
He was Robert Brooks.
At sixty-one, Robert had built a business empire from a single struggling regional hotel into one of the largest privately held hospitality groups in the country.
But none of that mattered to him as he approached his daughter.
He looked first at Danielle's cheek.
Then at the baby.
Then back at Danielle.
“Let me see your face.””
“Dad, I'm okay.””
Robert gently touched the uninjured side of her cheek.
“That's not what I asked.””
Danielle's eyes filled.
“I didn't want to bother you.””
Robert's expression softened.
“You could call me from the middle of the ocean, sweetheart. You would never be bothering me.””
He bent down and kissed Grace's forehead.
“Hello, little angel.””
Grace opened her tiny mouth and made a sleepy sound.
Robert smiled for half a second.
Then he stood.
The smile vanished.
“Who struck my daughter?””
Victoria stepped forward before anyone could answer.
“Mr. Brooks, I think there's been a misunderstanding.””
Robert turned toward her.
“Do I know you?””
“Victoria Harrington. My husband, Charles, and I have been loyal guests of this hotel for years.””
Robert looked at Richard.
“Is she the one?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes, sir. She's the guest involved in the altercation.””
Victoria's eyes widened.
“Guest? I'm the one who was assaulted!””
Robert studied her for a moment.
“Then I'm sure the cameras will establish that.””
She laughed nervously.
“Of course. But perhaps we can settle this without making a spectacle.””
Robert glanced at Danielle.
“She didn't ask for a spectacle. She asked for help.””
Then he turned toward Marcus.
“And you?””
Marcus straightened.
“Mr. Brooks, I was trying to manage a difficult situation.””
Robert's voice remained quiet.
“Did you see the mark on her cheek?””
“Yes, sir.””
“Did you ask whether she needed medical attention?””
Marcus hesitated.
“No.””
“Did you ask the receptionist what happened?””
“No, sir.””
“Did you review the footage?””
“Not at that time.””
“Then what exactly did you investigate before deciding my daughter had to leave?””
Marcus's lips parted.
Robert took one step closer.
“Was it her clothes?””
“Sir, that's not—”
“Was it the fact that she was carrying a baby?””
“No.””
“Or did you simply decide that the woman in the expensive dress was more important than the woman in front of you?””
Nobody spoke.
Victoria suddenly became very interested in her handbag.
Robert turned toward Richard.
“Take me to the security room.””
Richard nodded.
“Of course.””
But before they moved, Robert noticed Emily standing behind the reception desk.
“What is your name?””
“Emily, sir.””
“Emily, thank you for telling the truth.””
Her eyes widened.
Robert continued.
“I'd like you to remain available. No one should pressure you about what you witnessed.””
Marcus looked increasingly uncomfortable.
Richard motioned toward the elevators.
Robert began walking, but Danielle stopped him.
“Dad?””
He turned immediately.
“What is it?””
“Please don't do anything just because you're angry.””
Robert looked at her for a long moment.
Then he glanced at Grace.
“I won't punish anyone for making a mistake, Danielle. But I will not allow anyone to abuse their position and humiliate my daughter.””
He paused.
“And I certainly won't allow them to do it to another guest tomorrow.””
Danielle nodded.
Robert continued toward the elevators.
Richard followed.
Marcus hurried after them.
Victoria remained in the lobby, her face flushed.
As the elevator doors closed, Helen approached Danielle.
“Miss Brooks, would you like some water? Or perhaps a private room for you and the baby?””
“Water would be lovely. Thank you.””
Helen smiled gently.
“Right away.””
For the first time since entering the hotel, Danielle felt someone was treating her like a human being rather than an inconvenience.
But the peace lasted only a moment.
Emily suddenly approached the seating area, holding her phone.
“Miss Brooks?””
Danielle looked up.
“Yes?””
Emily lowered her voice.
“I don't know if I should tell you this, but Mrs. Harrington wasn't the only person who recognized you.””
Danielle frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Emily glanced toward the elevators.
“Before you arrived, she was arguing with someone on the phone. I heard her say that if the hotel changed ownership, she would make sure the new owner's family regretted it.””
Danielle stared at her.
“Changed ownership?””
Emily nodded.
Then she showed Danielle a photograph on her screen.
It was a picture taken earlier that morning.
Victoria was standing beside a man outside the hotel's private entrance.
Danielle recognized the man immediately.
May you like
It was Charles Harrington.
And he was holding a folder with her father's company's logo on it.
