Chapter 5: The Document Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Danielle felt Grace move against her chest.

“What does he mean?”” she asked.

Ethan glanced at her.

“Perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

Robert's voice hardened.

“No. You brought it into the lobby. You can explain it here.””

Ethan exhaled.

“Robert, this is a sensitive business matter.””

“You just told me someone has something belonging to my daughter.””

“It's not quite what I meant.””

“Then choose your words carefully.””

Ethan placed his briefcase on a nearby table.

“Three months ago, during the acquisition negotiations, Charles Harrington requested access to certain corporate documents. He claimed his investment group needed them for due diligence.””

Robert stared at him.

“And you gave him access?””

“Only limited access.””

“What documents?””

“Financial projections, property valuations, and several internal ownership records.””

Danielle frowned.

“What does any of that have to do with me?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Your name appeared in some of the records.””

“Why?””

Robert answered.

“Because Danielle owns shares in the family holding company.””

Danielle blinked.

She had known her father had arranged a financial trust for her years earlier, but she had never been involved in its management.

“Dad, I thought those shares were held in trust.””

“They are. But the beneficial ownership is yours.””

Ethan nodded.

“Exactly. And during the negotiations, Charles became particularly interested in the ownership structure.””

Robert's eyes narrowed.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't consider it significant at the time.””

“You shared my daughter's financial information with a potential buyer without consulting me?””

Ethan rubbed his chin.

“Robert, we were discussing a transaction worth hundreds of millions. The Harringtons wanted transparency.””

Danielle looked at him.

“Did they ask for information about me specifically?””

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

That was enough to make Robert suspicious.

“Ethan.””

“Yes. They requested the ownership records.””

“Why?””

“They wanted to know whether your daughter's shares could be transferred as part of the acquisition.””

Danielle felt a chill run through her.

“Transferred?””

Robert's expression hardened.

“Her shares aren't for sale.””

“I know that.””

“Then why were they discussing them?””

Ethan opened his briefcase and removed a thick folder.

“Because there was an alternative proposal.””

He placed the folder on the table.

Robert opened it.

The first page contained a preliminary acquisition structure.

The second listed several hotel properties.

The third contained a chart showing the company's ownership.

Danielle leaned closer.

Her name appeared beside a percentage.

Below it was a clause about voting rights.

Robert read the page twice.

“What is this?””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“A proposed voting agreement.””

Robert's eyes moved across the document.

It appeared to grant temporary voting authority over Danielle's shares to a third party under certain conditions.

“Who drafted this?””

“Charles's legal team.””

“And who approved it?””

Ethan hesitated.

“I authorized the preliminary review.””

Robert slammed the folder shut.

“You had no authority to authorize anything involving her shares.””

“I never signed the final agreement.””

“But you gave them the information needed to prepare it.””

Ethan spread his hands.

“I was trying to keep the negotiations alive.””

Danielle looked at the document.

“Why would Charles want control over my shares?””

Robert turned toward her.

“Because those shares carry voting rights in the holding company. Combined with the shares they were trying to purchase, they could influence the future direction of the business.””

Ethan nodded.

“The Harringtons believed the structure would make the acquisition easier.””

Robert's expression turned cold.

“Or give them control they couldn't obtain through a normal purchase.””

Ethan didn't respond.

Danielle stepped closer.

“Uncle Ethan, you knew me when I was a little girl. You came to my birthday parties. You watched me grow up.””

Ethan looked at her.

“I know.””

“Then why did you give strangers access to information about my future?””

His expression softened.

“Danielle, it wasn't personal.””

She looked down at Grace.

“That is exactly what makes it worse.””

For a moment, Ethan seemed unable to answer.

Then his phone vibrated.

He checked the screen and quickly turned it over.

Robert noticed.

“Who was that?””

“Nothing important.””

“Show me.””

“Robert, don't be unreasonable.””

Robert extended his hand.

“Ethan.””

The older man sighed and handed him the phone.

A message appeared on the screen.

*Charles Harrington: We need the original copy before Robert finds out what happened to the first agreement. Victoria says the girl is already at the hotel. Don't let this turn into a problem.*

Robert read it twice.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“What original agreement?””

Ethan's face had lost its color.

“Robert, I can explain.””

“Explain what?””

“The preliminary agreement wasn't the only document.””

Richard approached.

“Mr. Brooks, I think you need to see something.””

He held up a tablet.

“We recovered an email sent from Ethan's company account to Charles Harrington two weeks ago.””

Robert took the tablet.

The email contained an attachment.

A scanned document.

Danielle leaned forward.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

Her signature.

She stared at it.

“No.””

Robert looked at her.

“What is it?””

“That isn't real.””

Ethan looked away.

Danielle's voice trembled.

“I've never signed that.””

The document appeared to grant Charles Harrington temporary authority over her shares.

It also contained a statement confirming that Danielle had personally agreed to the arrangement.

Robert's hands tightened around the tablet.

“Ethan, tell me this is fake.””

Ethan swallowed.

“I didn't create that signature.””

“But you sent the document.””

“I was asked to forward it.””

“By whom?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he looked toward Danielle.

“Charles told me that Danielle had already agreed to the arrangement through a private representative.””

Danielle shook her head.

“I don't even know his representative.””

Robert's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Who gave you this document?””

Ethan looked at his phone.

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I received it from Charles's attorney.””

Richard examined the attachment.

“There's something else.””

He zoomed in on the lower corner.

A reference number appeared beside the document's filing date.

“This agreement was submitted to an external legal registry yesterday.””

Robert looked at him.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes, sir.””

Danielle felt her knees weaken.

“How could they submit something I never signed?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Someone may have submitted it using a falsified authorization.””

Robert immediately turned to his assistant.

“Call our legal department. Freeze every transaction involving Danielle's shares. No transfer, no vote, no authorization without direct verification.””

Helen nodded and hurried away.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Robert, listen to me. I didn't know they would file it.””

Robert looked at his oldest friend.

“You handed them the documents. You approved the negotiations. You forwarded an agreement carrying a forged signature. What exactly did you think they were going to do?””

Ethan's eyes lowered.

“I made a mistake.””

Robert shook his head.

“A mistake is forgetting a meeting. This is my daughter's identity and financial future.””

Danielle stared at the signature again.

Someone had copied her name.

Someone had used it to create an agreement she had never seen.

And suddenly, the slap in the lobby seemed connected to something far more deliberate.

She remembered Emily's photograph.

Charles holding the folder.

Victoria's angry reaction when Danielle refused to leave.

Then she remembered Victoria's words.

Some people see a luxury hotel and think they can just walk in.

Danielle looked at her father.

“Dad, what if she wasn't angry because I was there?””

Robert frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“What if she was angry because she recognized me?””

Nobody spoke.

Danielle looked at the document.

“What if she knew who I was before she ever approached me?””

May you like

Robert slowly turned toward Ethan.

And for the first time, Ethan looked genuinely frightened.
