Chapter 3: The Secret in the Security Footage
The security room was colder than the rest of the hotel.
Rows of monitors covered one wall. Each displayed a different section of the building: the entrance, the elevators, the restaurant, the parking garage, and the lobby.
Robert stood behind the security supervisor, his arms folded.
Richard was beside him.
Marcus stood near the door, looking as though he wished he were somewhere else.
“Bring up the lobby recording,” Robert said.
The supervisor, a man named Daniel Price, nodded.
“Which time, sir?””
“Approximately eleven twenty this morning.””
Daniel typed a few commands.
The footage appeared on the largest screen.
At first, it showed Danielle entering the lobby with Grace in her arms.
She walked slowly, adjusting the baby's blanket.
She approached the seating alcove and sat down.
She checked her phone.
Nothing unusual.
Then Victoria appeared.
She entered through the main doors, wearing the same fuchsia dress.
She walked toward the reception desk, stopped, and looked at Danielle.
A few seconds later, she approached her.
Robert leaned closer to the screen.
“Pause.””
Daniel froze the footage.
Victoria was standing directly in front of Danielle.
Danielle hadn't moved.
“Continue.””
The next few seconds unfolded.
Victoria pointed toward Danielle.
Danielle shook her head.
Victoria stepped closer.
Then her hand moved.
The slap was unmistakable.
Robert's jaw tightened.
Richard looked at Marcus.
“Is there any doubt now?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No, sir.””
Robert didn't take his eyes off the screen.
“Continue.””
The recording showed Danielle instinctively turning away to shield Grace.
Victoria continued speaking.
Then Marcus appeared.
The security footage captured every moment.
It showed him approaching Victoria first.
It showed Danielle pointing to her cheek.
It showed Marcus barely looking at the injury.
And it showed him ordering the security guards to remove Danielle.
Daniel stopped the video.
The room was silent.
Robert slowly turned toward Marcus.
“Would you like to explain this?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Sir, I made a judgment based on the information available at the time.””
Robert pointed toward the frozen image.
“She told you she had been slapped.””
“Yes.””
“You saw the mark.””
“Yes.””
“And you still ordered her out.””
“I was attempting to prevent a disruption.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“Then perhaps we should discuss what you believe your responsibilities actually are.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
Richard's expression was unreadable.
“Marcus, your actions are being formally reviewed. Until that review is complete, you are relieved of your managerial duties.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Sir?””
“You heard me.””
“This is my career.””
Richard answered calmly.
“Then you should have treated it with more care.””
Marcus looked toward Robert.
“Mr. Brooks, please. I have worked for this company for eleven years.””
Robert's voice was firm.
“Eleven years should have taught you that every person entering this hotel deserves to be heard.””
Marcus lowered his head.
But Robert wasn't finished.
“Now, tell me something. Why was Victoria Harrington so comfortable demanding that you remove my daughter?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Mrs. Harrington is a frequent guest.””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
“She has a close relationship with several members of the regional management team.””
Robert looked at Richard.
“Which members?””
Richard frowned.
“I'll investigate that immediately.””
Robert returned his attention to Marcus.
“Did you receive any instructions regarding her?””
“No, sir.””
“Are you certain?””
Marcus's eyes moved briefly toward the floor.
Robert noticed.
“Look at me.””
Marcus slowly raised his head.
“Are you certain?””
“I didn't receive a direct instruction.””
The wording caught Robert's attention.
“Direct instruction?””
Marcus's throat moved.
“Mrs. Harrington has made complaints about certain guests before. Management usually tries to accommodate her.””
Robert stared at him.
“By removing people she doesn't like?””
Marcus said nothing.
Richard exhaled sharply.
“This is worse than I thought.””
Robert turned toward Daniel.
“Save the footage. Every camera angle. Make secure copies and restrict access.””
“Yes, sir.””
“And preserve the audio.””
Daniel nodded.
“Already working on it.””
Robert walked toward the door.
“I need to speak with my daughter.””
Meanwhile, in the lobby, Danielle sat in a quiet corner with Grace resting against her shoulder.
A cup of water stood untouched on the small table.
Emily had returned to the reception desk.
Helen had offered to bring Danielle something to eat, but Danielle had declined.
She wasn't hungry.
She was thinking about the photograph.
Charles Harrington.
The folder.
The company's logo.
When Robert returned, Danielle looked up.
“Did you see the footage?””
“Yes.””
“Was it clear?””
“Every second.””
She nodded.
“Good.””
Robert pulled out a chair and sat beside her.
“Danielle, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Did you recognize Charles Harrington?””
She looked at him.
“Of course. He's the man in the photograph Emily showed me.””
Robert's expression darkened.
“You saw that photograph?””
Danielle handed him the phone.
He examined it carefully.
“Where did Emily get this?””
“She said she took it earlier this morning. They were standing near the private entrance.””
Robert zoomed in on the folder.
The logo was unmistakable.
Brooks Hospitality Group.
Danielle looked at her father.
“Why was Charles holding our documents?””
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Then he spoke.
“Because his company has been trying to buy a controlling interest in one of our hotel divisions.””
Danielle frowned.
“I thought you rejected their offer.””
“I did.””
“Then why were they here?””
Robert studied the photograph again.
“That is what I intend to find out.””
He slipped the phone into his coat pocket.
“There's something else you should know. The Harringtons have been trying to establish a partnership with our regional management team for months.””
Danielle looked toward the reception desk.
“Does that include Marcus?””
“I don't know yet.””
She glanced down at Grace.
“Dad, I don't want this to become a family war.””
Robert gently touched her shoulder.
“It already became something bigger when someone decided your dignity depended on your clothes.””
Danielle looked away.
For a moment, the lobby noise seemed distant.
She remembered the slap.
The laughter.
Marcus telling her to leave.
And the faces of all the people who had watched without moving.
“Do you know what hurt the most?”” she whispered.
Robert waited.
“It wasn't even the slap. It was realizing that everyone thought I deserved it because I didn't look important enough.””
Robert's eyes softened.
“You never needed expensive clothes to be important, sweetheart.””
“I know.””
“Then don't let today make you forget it.””
Grace stirred.
Danielle smiled faintly and kissed her daughter's forehead.
At that moment, Richard hurried across the lobby.
“Robert, we have a problem.””
Robert stood.
“What now?””
Richard held up his phone.
“Corporate security just found something in the hotel's internal records.””
“What?””
Richard looked toward Danielle before answering.
“Mrs. Harrington's room charges have been repeatedly waived over the last six months. So have several private dining bills. All approved under the same management account.””
Robert frowned.
“Whose account?””
Richard hesitated.
“Marcus Reed's.””
Danielle looked up.
“Why would he do that?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Because the payments weren't recorded as complimentary guest services. They were categorized as business development expenses.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“Who authorized them?””
Richard tapped his screen.
“We traced the approval chain. There's a second name.””
He turned the phone toward Robert.
Robert stared at the screen.
Then he went completely still.
Danielle noticed the change immediately.
“Dad?””
Robert slowly lowered the phone.
“Get the regional director on the line.””
Richard nodded.
“Already trying.””
Robert looked at the photograph again.
Then at the name on the approval record.
The person responsible wasn't a stranger.
It was someone Robert had personally trusted to protect the company.
And when Danielle finally saw the name, she understood why her father had suddenly stopped speaking.
May you like
Because the person who had been helping the Harringtons wasn't just a hotel employee.
It was the man who had once promised Robert he would never betray the Brooks family.
