Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Took To His Grave

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The words didn’t make sense.

They couldn’t.

“My father?””

I stared at Victoria.

“No.””

She looked like she wished she could take the words back.

But there were no more places to hide.

“Yes.””

My hands shook.

“My father was driving the car?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

I stepped away.

“No.””

The denial came from somewhere deeper than logic.

My father.

The man I spent my childhood admiring.

The man whose name was carved into the foundation of everything I knew.

The man whose death I had mourned every single day.

“You’re lying.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wish I was.””

The wedding hall became silent again.

But this silence felt different.

Before, I had been searching for answers.

Now I was afraid of them.

Luca moved closer.

“Adrian.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

I couldn’t hear comfort.

I couldn’t hear explanations.

Not anymore.

“Everyone has been telling me pieces of this story.””

My voice trembled.

“But nobody told me the truth.””

I looked at Victoria.

“You said my mother remembered everything.””

“Yes.””

“What did she remember?””

Victoria looked down.

“She remembered your father losing control of the car.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

I turned toward Elias.

“You know.””

The lawyer looked away.

“You all know.””

Finally, Elias spoke.

“Your father wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.””

I stared.

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It’s supposed to make you understand.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Understand what?””

“That the accident wasn’t intentional.””

The words didn’t comfort me.

They only created more questions.

“So my father accidentally destroyed our family?””

Elias was silent.

Luca stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Luca’s expression was serious.

“Your father was not the cause of the accident.””

I turned.

“Then why did Victoria say he was driving?””

“Because he was.””

My frustration exploded.

“Then explain!””

Luca took a breath.

“Your father was driving.””

A pause.

“But he wasn’t in control.””

The room went still.

“What does that mean?””

Luca looked at the documents.

“Someone tampered with the car.””

My heart stopped.

“Richard.””

Luca nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the phone in my hand.

The man who had guided my family.

The man who had comforted me.

The man who had acted like a father after mine died.

He wasn’t protecting me.

He was hiding from me.

“But why blame my father?””

Luca answered quietly.

“Because dead men can’t defend themselves.””

The cruelty of it settled over me.

Richard didn’t just destroy my family.

He used my father’s memory as a shield.

I looked at Victoria.

“And my mother?””

“She found out.””

“And then?””

Victoria swallowed.

“She tried to expose Richard.””

I waited.

“She collected evidence.””

The letter.

The documents.

The hidden accounts.

Everything started connecting.

“But why didn’t she come to me?””

Victoria looked away.

“Because Richard knew she survived.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You said she disappeared to protect me.””

“Yes.””

“And she stayed away because of Richard.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Clara.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

“My mother spent years believing Adrian hated her.””

The sentence broke something inside me.

I looked down.

I had spent years believing she abandoned me.

She had spent years believing I wanted her gone.

Both of us had been victims of the same lie.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

Everyone froze.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

*You finally know the truth. Now ask Victoria why she lied about the accident.*

My eyes moved slowly toward her.

Victoria looked terrified.

“Adrian…”

“What lie?””

She didn’t answer.

The message appeared again.

*Ask her who was in the car after your father died.*

My blood went cold.

I looked at Victoria.

“Who was in the car?””

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

A memory.

“Victoria.””

She closed her eyes.

“There was someone else.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“You.””

I stared.

“What?””

“You were in the car.””

The words hit me.

I felt the floor shift.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“I was not in that accident.””

Victoria looked at me.

“You were.””

My breathing became uneven.

“My father.””

“Yes.””

“My mother.””

“Yes.””

“And me?””

She nodded.

“All three of you.””

I looked at Luca.

He looked away.

Marco lowered his head.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

“Why don’t I remember?””

Victoria’s voice broke.

“Because after the accident, you weren’t just injured.””

I waited.

“You saw something.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?””

She looked at the letter.

“Something that your mind buried.””

My heart pounded.

“What did I see?””

Nobody answered.

Then Clara stepped forward.

“My mother knew.””

I looked at her.

“She told me once.””

“Told you what?””

Clara’s eyes filled.

“She said Adrian didn’t forget because of the accident.””

The room became silent.

“She said Adrian forgot because he saw the person who caused it.””

My entire body went cold.

I touched my forehead.

Suddenly fragments appeared.

A flash of headlights.

Rain.

Glass breaking.

A hand grabbing my shoulder.

A voice shouting my name.

A face.

But it disappeared before I could see it clearly.

I stumbled backward.

Victoria grabbed my arm.

“Adrian.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

The hurt in her face was immediate.

But I couldn’t handle another person holding pieces of my past.

“I need to know.””

I looked at everyone.

“I need to know what happened that night.””

Elias slowly opened the folder again.

“There is one final document.””

My eyes moved toward him.

“What document?””

“Your mother’s statement.””

My heart raced.

“She wrote it before she disappeared.””

“Why wasn’t I given it?””

Nobody answered.

Elias handed it to me.

The paper was old.

The handwriting familiar.

I read the first line.

*Adrian, if you are reading this, I failed to protect you.*

My hands shook.

I continued.

*You will hear many versions of what happened that night. Some will blame your father. Some will blame Richard. Some will blame me.*

I swallowed.

*But the truth is simpler.*

My eyes moved down.

*Your father discovered Richard’s betrayal. Richard discovered that your father knew.*

The words blurred.

*The accident was arranged to silence him.*

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

I kept reading.

*But Richard made one mistake.*

A chill moved through me.

*He didn’t realize Adrian survived.*

The next sentence made my heart stop.

*And he didn’t realize Adrian saw him.*

I dropped the paper.

The memory came back.

Not completely.

Just enough.

A man standing beside the car.

Rain pouring.

My father unconscious.

My mother screaming.

And me…

A child’s hand gripping the edge of the broken window.

Watching.

Waiting.

The man turned.

I saw his face.

I knew him.

I knew him.

My voice came out barely audible.

“No.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“I remember.””

Everyone froze.

Luca moved forward.

“What did you see?””

My hands trembled.

I looked toward the entrance.

Toward the empty doorway.

Toward the place where Richard had been standing.

Then I whispered:

“He wasn’t alone.””

Nobody moved.

“Richard had someone with him.””

Victoria’s face went pale.

“Who?””

I closed my eyes.

The memory became clearer.

A second figure.

A familiar voice.

A person I trusted.

A person who helped Richard cover everything.

I opened my eyes.

And the name came out.

“Elias.””

The lawyer stepped back.

“No.””

The room erupted.

Marco stared at him.

Luca’s expression hardened.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Elias shook his head.

“You’re confused.””

But I wasn’t.

Not anymore.

I remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

The man beside Richard that night.

The man who helped hide the truth.

The man who had protected our family’s secrets for years.

Was standing right in front of me.

Then Elias did something nobody expected.

He reached inside his jacket.

Not for a document.

Not for a phone.

For a weapon.

Everyone froze.

May you like

And he whispered:

“I was hoping you would never remember.””
