Chapter 8: The Man Who Raised Me With a Lie

The name sat on the edge of my memory.

Not fully remembered.

Not completely forgotten.

Like a door I had spent years walking past without realizing it was locked.

Elias looked at me.

Everyone looked at me.

Waiting for recognition.

Waiting for my reaction.

But all I felt was confusion.

“Say it.””

My voice was low.

Elias hesitated.

I stepped closer.

“Say his name.””

The lawyer looked toward Victoria.

She looked terrified.

That was when I knew.

Whatever came next would change everything.

Elias finally spoke.

“Richard Vale.””

The wedding hall seemed to shrink.

Richard Vale.

My father’s best friend.

My father’s business partner.

The man who attended every family event.

The man who held my shoulder at my father’s funeral and told me, “You’re not alone.””

The man who guided me when I took over the company.

The man who always told me he was proud of me.

I stared ahead.

“No.””

Luca watched me carefully.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“Richard saved me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew that was the story I had been told.

The story I had lived with.

The story that was now falling apart.

“He found me after the accident,” I said.

My voice became louder.

“He pulled me out of the car.””

Luca nodded slowly.

“He did.””

The answer confused me.

“Then why are you saying he was responsible?””

“Because the person who creates a fire can still be the person who carries someone out of the flames.””

The words hit me.

I hated that they made sense.

I looked at Victoria.

“You knew.””

She looked away.

“How long?””

Her silence answered before she did.

“Since the beginning.””

My chest tightened.

“The beginning of what?””

“The beginning of everything.””

I walked toward her.

“You knew Richard was involved.””

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“And you still let me trust him?””

She looked devastated.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“But somehow every person protecting me is the person hurting me.””

Nobody responded.

Because nobody could.

Clara slowly approached.

“Adrian.””

I looked at her.

“My mother knew Richard was dangerous.””

The words made me freeze.

“What?””

Clara nodded.

“She spent years trying to find proof.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she believed someone was watching you.””

My eyes moved around the room.

“Someone was.””

The realization settled over me.

My entire life after the accident had been controlled by fear.

People weren’t just hiding things.

They were hiding things because they believed someone was listening.

Someone was waiting.

I looked at Elias.

“What proof do we have?””

He opened the folder again.

This time, his hands were shaking.

“Your father kept records.””

“Of Richard?””

“Yes.””

I grabbed the documents.

The first pages were financial reports.

Transfers.

Accounts.

Names.

Then I saw it.

My father’s signature.

And underneath it, a handwritten note.

*If anything happens to me, trust Adrian. Do not trust Richard.*

My breathing stopped.

My father knew.

He knew before he died.

“Why didn’t I see this?””

Elias looked away.

“Because Richard took control of the investigation.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

“He controlled everything?””

“Yes.””

“The police?””

“Some.””

“The company?””

“Most.””

I looked at Victoria.

“And my life?””

She whispered:

“Almost.””

That word hurt.

Almost.

Because it meant I had been close to losing everything.

I turned the page.

There was another document.

A photograph attached.

It showed Richard meeting someone outside a hotel.

Someone familiar.

My eyes narrowed.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marco stepped forward.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at him.

My brother looked older than he had earlier.

Like carrying secrets had aged him.

“Who?””

Marco swallowed.

“That’s the person who gave Richard information about the company.””

I stared.

“Who?””

He closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Me.””

The room exploded into silence.

I couldn’t process it.

“Marco?””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know what I was doing.””

My anger rose.

“What does that mean?””

“Richard convinced me he was protecting the family.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

Marco looked ashamed.

“He told me you were too young to run the company.””

“I was twenty-seven.””

“I know.””

“He told me I deserved more.””

Marco’s voice broke.

“I believed him.””

I stared at my brother.

“You helped him steal from us?””

“No.””

He shook his head quickly.

“I helped him hide things.””

The distinction meant nothing.

“Why?””

Marco looked down.

“Because I was angry.””

The honesty surprised me.

“At me?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because after our father died, everyone chose you.””

The words hurt.

“But I never asked for that.””

“I know.””

Marco wiped his face.

“I know that now.””

For years, I had thought my brother was my strongest supporter.

Now I wondered if he had secretly hated me.

The thought hurt more than I expected.

Then Luca spoke.

“But Marco wasn’t the one who caused the accident.””

Everyone turned.

Luca looked at me.

“He was manipulated.””

Marco looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell Adrian?””

Luca’s expression hardened.

“Because nobody listened to me.””

The truth of that sentence was painful.

Everyone had lost something.

But I was the one who lost my own memories.

A sound suddenly interrupted us.

A notification.

Clara looked at her phone.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I asked.

She didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the screen toward me.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Only five words.

*You opened the wrong door.*

My stomach dropped.

“How did they know?””

Nobody answered.

Then another message arrived.

This time with a photo.

A photo taken inside the wedding hall.

A photo of all of us standing together.

Taken minutes ago.

Someone had been watching us.

Inside the building.

I looked toward the entrance.

The guards were gone.

The doors were closed.

“How?””

Elias suddenly looked alarmed.

“Everyone leave.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Now.””

His voice was urgent.

“You don’t understand.””

Luca stepped forward.

“I understand.””

He looked around.

“They found us.””

A strange sound came from above.

A small click.

Like a device turning on.

Victoria looked upward.

Then her face drained of color.

“Adrian…”

I followed her eyes.

A tiny red light blinked near the ceiling.

A camera.

Someone had installed a hidden camera in the wedding hall.

Someone had been recording everything.

Every confession.

Every secret.

Every name.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“You always were the difficult one to control.””

My blood turned cold.

I knew that voice.

Not from today.

Not from a dream.

From childhood.

From family dinners.

From years of trust.

“Richard?””

A soft laugh came through the phone.

“There you are.””

Everyone froze.

Richard continued.

“I was wondering when you would finally remember.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

“Closer than you think.””

My eyes moved around the room.

“Why did you do it?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because your father chose you.””

My jaw tightened.

“What?””

“He chose you over everyone.””

The anger in his voice was unmistakable.

“Over me.””

The call became quieter.

“You had no idea how much I sacrificed for your family.””

“You stole from us.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“I corrected an injustice.””

I felt sick.

“You tried to kill my mother.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I tried to stop her from destroying everything.””

My heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Ask Victoria why she never told you what happened after the crash.””

I looked at Victoria.

She immediately looked away.

My stomach sank.

“Victoria?””

Richard laughed softly.

“She knows.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Victoria whispered:

“Adrian…”

I stared at her.

“What happened after the crash?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And this time…

She didn’t avoid the truth.

She said the words I never expected to hear.

“Your mother woke up before you did.””

A chill went through me.

“And?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“She remembered everything.””

I waited.

“What did she remember?””

Victoria’s voice broke.

“She remembered who was driving the car.””

The room went silent.

Because everyone understood the meaning.

The accident wasn’t just an attack.

It wasn’t just betrayal.

Someone had been behind the wheel.

Someone had been there.

Someone close.

Victoria looked at me.

And whispered:

“Adrian…”

Her face turned pale.

“The person driving that night…”

She stopped.

Unable to finish.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

May you like

Then said:

“It was your father.””
