Chapter 4: The Guest Who Was Never Supposed To Be There

The silence after Marco’s confession felt louder than any scream.

I stared at him.

My own brother.

The person who had stood beside me through every funeral, every business crisis, every sleepless night.

The person I trusted without question.

“The person who caused the accident…”

My voice barely worked.

“Was someone I invited to this wedding?””

Marco’s eyes dropped.

That was the moment something inside me broke.

Because if he had denied it, I might have believed him.

If he had looked offended, angry, shocked…

Maybe I would have searched for another explanation.

But he didn’t.

He looked guilty.

And guilt was something I recognized.

Especially now.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

I looked around the empty wedding hall.

The flowers.

The chairs.

The decorations.

The photographs of Victoria and me displayed near the entrance.

Everything suddenly felt like a carefully designed trap.

“Who was it?””

My voice echoed.

Marco stepped forward.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“Not another excuse.””

His face tightened.

“I’m not making excuses.””

“You’re protecting someone.””

His silence confirmed it.

I turned away from him.

My eyes landed on Victoria.

She was still standing there, motionless.

“You knew.””

She looked at me.

“Adrian…”

“You knew who caused the accident.””

Her lips trembled.

“I knew what happened.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

I stepped closer.

“Did you know who was responsible?””

Victoria looked down.

And that answer was worse than anything she could have said.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“My wedding day.””

I looked around.

“My wedding day, and I’m finding out that everyone here knows a different version of my life.””

Nobody spoke.

Clara moved closer.

“Adrian.””

I looked at her.

She seemed like the only person in the room who wasn’t trying to control what I knew.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

I almost smiled.

“Of course there is.””

She looked hurt.

But I couldn’t stop.

“How many more secrets are there?””

Clara lowered her eyes.

“One more.””

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?””

She looked at the envelope.

“The letter wasn’t the only thing my mother left.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Clara reached into her bag.

This time, she pulled out a small key.

Old.

Rusty.

Attached to a metal tag.

I recognized the symbol immediately.

The Moretti family crest.

“Where did you get that?””

“My mother gave it to me before she disappeared.””

The word hit me.

Disappeared.

Not died.

Not left.

Disappeared.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I had to protect this.””

I stared at the key.

“What does it open?””

Clara looked at Victoria.

Then at Marco.

“A place neither of them wanted you to find.””

Victoria’s face changed.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

The fear was back.

“What place?”” I asked.

Victoria shook her head.

“Adrian, don’t.””

I stepped toward her.

“Stop telling me what to do.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m trying to keep you safe.””

“Safe from the truth?””

“Safe from what comes after.””

The words chilled me.

Before I could respond, the sound of footsteps came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Wearing a dark suit.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

I recognized him immediately.

He was one of the most respected attorneys in the city.

A man who had represented my family for over twenty years.

“Elias.””

My voice hardened.

He looked at me.

“Adrian.””

Nobody moved.

Then I noticed something.

He was holding a folder.

And on the folder was the same Moretti family crest.

Victoria immediately stepped toward him.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Elias looked at her.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

“On whether you still plan to continue lying.””

The room froze.

I looked between them.

“You two know each other?””

Elias gave a tired smile.

“I know everyone involved.””

I felt anger rise.

“Apparently everyone does except me.””

He looked at me carefully.

“I was hoping you would never have to learn the truth this way.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Is there another way people usually find out their entire life was a lie?””

Elias didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked toward him.

“What’s in the folder?””

He held it tightly.

“Documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

He looked at Victoria.

Then at Marco.

Then back at me.

“The kind that explain why your mother disappeared.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Give it to me.””

Elias hesitated.

“Adrian—”

“Give it to me.””

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then he handed me the folder.

Inside were hospital records.

Police reports.

Financial documents.

And one photograph.

A photograph that made my hands go numb.

It showed me.

Standing outside a hospital.

Five years ago.

Beside me was my mother.

And beside her…

Was Victoria.

But they weren’t fighting.

They weren’t strangers.

They were holding hands.

Like friends.

Like family.

I looked at Victoria.

“What is this?””

She closed her eyes.

“That was before.””

“Before what?””

“Before everything changed.””

I threw the photograph onto the table.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I expect you to hate me.””

The honesty surprised me.

She looked at the floor.

“But I need you to know why.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain.””

Victoria took a deep breath.

“Your mother came to me after the accident.””

Clara immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Victoria looked at her.

“She did.””

“She trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“Then you betrayed her.””

The accusation hung in the air.

Victoria looked away.

“I made a choice.””

“What choice?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“The choice to save Adrian.””

I froze.

“By lying to me?””

“By keeping you alive.””

The words made no sense.

“Alive?””

Victoria nodded.

“After the accident, your mother found out something about the Moretti family.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The accident wasn’t meant for her.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“What do you mean?””

Victoria looked at the folder.

“It was meant for you.””

Nobody spoke.

I stared at her.

“Someone tried to kill me?””

“Yes.””

“And my mother?””

“She was in the car because she found out too late.””

I looked at Clara.

She was crying silently.

“My mother knew someone wanted Adrian dead.””

Victoria nodded.

“And she tried to stop it.””

I looked back at Victoria.

“Then why did you make me believe she abandoned me?””

Her face broke.

“Because the person who tried to kill you was still watching.””

The room became colder.

“Watching?””

Victoria nodded.

“They needed to believe your mother was gone.””

“Why?””

“Because if they knew she survived…”

She stopped.

I stepped closer.

“Finish the sentence.””

Victoria whispered:

“They would come back and finish what they started.””

The words stayed in the air.

For the first time, I didn’t see Victoria as someone who simply betrayed me.

I saw someone who had been afraid.

But fear didn’t erase what she had done.

“You let me mourn someone who was alive.””

“I know.””

“You erased years of my life.””

“I know.””

“You made me fall in love with you while hiding everything.””

Tears fell from her eyes.

“I know.””

I looked away.

Because somehow her pain didn’t make mine smaller.

It only made everything more complicated.

Then Clara suddenly gasped.

Everyone turned.

She was staring at the folder.

At one particular document.

Her face had gone pale.

“What?””

I asked.

She slowly pointed.

“That signature.””

I followed her finger.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

A name I knew.

A name I trusted.

A name that had been on every important document in my life.

My financial adviser.

My family’s oldest friend.

The person who had helped manage the Moretti empire after my father died.

The person who had stood beside me today.

I whispered the name.

“Elias…”

The attorney looked away.

And in that moment, I understood.

He wasn’t here to reveal the truth.

He was here because he was part of it.

The man who had helped build my family’s fortune.

The man who had guided my decisions for years.

The man standing inside my wedding hall.

Was connected to the night that destroyed my life.

I turned toward him.

“What did you do?””

Elias remained silent.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

And all the color disappeared from his face.

Because the person calling him was someone whose name should have been impossible.

Someone who had been missing for five years.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Elias answered slowly.

“Hello?””

A voice came through the speaker.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

But Clara did.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

May you like

Because after five years of silence…

Her mother was calling.
