Chapter 10: The Truth That Set Us Free
The moment Elias reached inside his jacket, every person in the wedding hall froze.
For five years, I had searched for answers.
For five years, I wondered why my memories had disappeared.
Why my mother vanished.
Why Victoria lied.
Why my family carried secrets that I could feel but never see.
And now the man who had helped shape my entire life was standing in front of me with his hand hidden beneath his coat.
The old version of me would have trusted him.
The old version of me would have believed his explanation.
But that man was gone.
I had spent one day watching my entire world collapse.
And somehow, through all the pain, I had finally found the one thing everyone had tried to take from me.
The truth.
“Elias.””
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
He stopped.
His eyes met mine.
“Adrian.””
I shook my head.
“No more.””
The room was silent.
“No more explanations. No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””
Elias’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re asking for.””
I looked at the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
“I understand perfectly.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Elias, don’t.””
He looked at her.
And the sadness in his eyes surprised me.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Regret.
“You should have stayed out of this.””
Victoria shook her head.
“I should have told him.””
The words stunned everyone.
Even me.
She looked at me.
“I should have told you everything years ago.””
I stared at her.
For the first time, she wasn’t trying to justify herself.
She wasn’t trying to make herself look like the hero.
She was simply admitting the truth.
“I was afraid,” she whispered.
I said nothing.
“I was afraid that if you remembered everything, I would lose you.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I was right.””
The pain in her face was real.
But pain didn’t erase betrayal.
It never would.
Elias suddenly laughed quietly.
“You still think this is about love?””
Everyone looked at him.
He lowered his hand slightly.
“This was never about love.””
He looked around the wedding hall.
“It was always about power.””
The words carried through the room.
“Your father built an empire.””
He looked at me.
“And then he decided his son deserved it more than the people who helped him create it.””
I frowned.
“My father trusted you.””
“Yes.””
Elias smiled bitterly.
“That was his mistake.””
Luca stepped forward.
“You were his friend.””
Elias looked at him.
“I was his servant.””
The bitterness in his voice was impossible to miss.
“For thirty years, I stood beside the Moretti family.””
He pointed at the decorations around us.
“I watched your father become powerful.””
Then he looked at me.
“And I watched him choose you.””
I understood then.
This wasn’t just greed.
It was resentment.
Years of feeling invisible.
Years of believing he deserved what belonged to someone else.
“You didn’t want the company,” I said.
Elias looked at me.
“I wanted recognition.””
The room went silent.
“I wanted your father to see me as family.””
He laughed.
“But families inherit things.””
His eyes darkened.
“They don’t receive thank-you letters.””
I shook my head.
“So you destroyed everything?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I corrected it.””
The words were terrifying.
“You caused the accident.””
“Yes.””
Everyone reacted.
Even Marco stepped back.
Elias didn’t deny it.
Not anymore.
“I tampered with the car.””
My mother’s voice came through the phone, still connected.
“You killed my husband.””
Elias looked toward the phone.
“Your husband made his choice.””
I felt anger rise.
“My father didn’t choose to die.””
“No.””
Elias looked at me.
“He chose you.””
The words were filled with hatred.
“He changed the will because he discovered the truth about me.””
He looked at Luca.
“And he believed this family was safer without me.””
Luca clenched his fists.
“You framed me.””
“Yes.””
Elias admitted it.
“You were the easiest target.””
My stomach turned.
All those years.
All those broken relationships.
Built on one man’s lie.
I looked at Victoria.
“Why did you help him?””
Her face changed.
“I didn’t.””
Elias smiled.
“She did.””
Victoria immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew about the accident.””
“Yes.””
“But you hid the truth.””
Her eyes filled.
“I hid the truth because I thought I was protecting Adrian.””
Elias laughed.
“That’s what you told yourself.””
Victoria looked at him.
“You threatened his life.””
The room became silent.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She turned toward me.
“After the accident, Elias found me.””
My heart tightened.
“He told me if I exposed him, he would finish what he started.””
My hands curled into fists.
“So you were afraid.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“I was twenty-six years old, Adrian. I had no power. No proof. And you were lying in a hospital bed.””
She swallowed.
“He told me he could reach you anytime.””
The anger inside me mixed with something else.
Understanding.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
Elias shook his head.
“You’re both pathetic.””
He stepped backward.
“You think telling him the truth fixes everything?””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“It doesn’t.””
He paused.
“But it ends with you.””
Suddenly, the sound of sirens came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Elias’s expression changed.
“What did you do?””
I looked at him.
“I remembered.””
He stared.
“What?””
I pointed toward the hidden camera.
“The camera in the wedding hall.””
His face went pale.
“You recorded everything.””
I nodded.
“Every confession.””
Elias looked around.
Then he laughed.
“You think that matters?””
“It does.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“Because you still don’t know the whole truth.””
A chill went through me.
“What else?””
Elias looked toward Victoria.
Then Marco.
Then Luca.
“There is one thing nobody told you.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Victoria looked confused.
Elias smiled.
“Your father didn’t die in the accident.””
The room froze.
“What?””
Luca stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Elias shook his head.
“He survived.””
My heartbeat stopped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Your father survived long enough to identify me.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“Then why…”
“Because someone made sure he couldn’t speak.””
Everyone looked at Victoria.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Elias laughed.
“Ask her.””
My eyes moved to Victoria.
“Victoria?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Adrian…”
The fear returned.
“What happened?””
She looked broken.
“Your father woke up.””
The room went silent.
“He was alive.””
I could barely breathe.
“What did he say?””
Victoria covered her mouth.
“He said one name.””
“Whose?””
She looked at Elias.
Then back at me.
“Yours.””
My heart broke.
“He asked if you were safe.””
I closed my eyes.
A memory appeared.
A hand holding mine.
A voice whispering:
“Protect him.””
My father.
Not gone.
Not abandoned.
Trying to protect me until the end.
“What happened to him?””
Victoria started crying.
“Richard found him.””
The truth was finally complete.
The accident.
The lies.
The missing memories.
Everything.
Elias looked defeated.
Because there was nowhere left to hide.
The police entered the wedding hall moments later.
But before they took him away, he looked at me.
“You think you won?””
I stared at him.
“No.””
He seemed surprised.
“I think everyone lost.””
For the first time, he had no answer.
Weeks passed after that day.
The world learned the truth.
Richard Vale was arrested.
The evidence from the hidden camera, the documents, and my mother’s records exposed everything.
The Moretti family name survived.
But it changed.
Because secrets had protected us for too long.
My mother returned home.
The first time I saw her walk through the front door, neither of us spoke.
We simply held each other.
And cried.
Clara and Emma stayed.
The truth about my relationship with Clara’s mother was complicated.
I had loved her once.
A love stolen by lies and time.
But Clara wasn’t a ghost from my past.
She was a person who deserved a future.
And Emma…
Emma was my daughter.
The first time she called me Daddy after everything was revealed, I didn’t freeze.
I didn’t panic.
I simply held her hand.
Victoria left.
Not because she was a monster.
Not because every moment between us was fake.
Some moments were real.
Some love was real.
But love built on secrets could never become a home.
Months later, I returned to the place where everything ended.
The wedding hall.
The flowers were gone.
The decorations were gone.
Only empty space remained.
I stood there for a long time.
Thinking about the man I was before.
The man who believed his life was perfect.
Then I smiled.
Because he wasn’t dead.
He was just waiting to become someone stronger.
My father once told me:
“The truth can break you.””
He was right.
But he forgot one thing.
The truth can also rebuild you.
And on the day my wedding ended after five minutes…
May you like
I thought I lost everything.
I didn’t know I was finally getting my life back.
