Chapter 7: The Name Written on the Test

Nobody moved.

The document sat on the dining table like a bomb waiting to explode.

Andre stared at the paternity test.

The words blurred.

He read them again.

Then again.

The result was impossible.

Marcus Vale was not Ben's biological father.

But if that was true, then why had everyone spent years acting like he was?

Why had Nia been afraid?

Why had Tanya hidden letters?

Why had Marcus returned?

Andre slowly lifted his eyes.

"Explain.""

Nobody answered.

His voice became sharper.

"Someone explain.""

Marcus leaned against the doorway.

For the first time, his confident expression cracked.

Tanya looked at Ben.

The boy stood completely still.

Waiting.

Andre hated that look.

The look of a child preparing himself for another betrayal.

"Tanya," Andre said quietly.

She swallowed.

"Andre...""

"No.""

He pointed at the paper.

"You are going to tell him.""

Ben looked at his stepmother.

"Tell me what?""

Tanya closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I knew about the test.""

Ben's face changed.

"What?""

"I knew Marcus wasn't your father.""

The words landed heavily.

"Then why did you let me believe he was?""

Tanya looked broken.

"Because I didn't know who your father was.""

Andre frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Tanya looked toward the document.

"When Nia was dying, she told me there was something she needed to confess.""

Andre froze.

"You spoke to Nia?""

Tanya nodded.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"The night before she died.""

The room became silent.

Ben stared.

"You saw my mom?""

Tanya looked at him.

"Yes.""

"And you never told me?""

Tanya's lips trembled.

"No.""

Ben stepped backward.

Andre saw the pain in his son's face.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

"Why?""

Tanya looked down.

"Because your mother made me promise.""

Andre shook his head.

"Promise what?""

"That I would protect you.""

Ben laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?""

His voice broke.

"By lying?""

Tanya couldn't answer.

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

"She wasn't protecting you.""

Everyone looked at him.

"She was protecting herself.""

Andre turned.

"You don't get to pretend you're the victim here.""

Marcus smiled.

"You still don't understand.""

"Then make me understand.""

Marcus looked at Ben.

"Your mother was afraid of me.""

Ben looked away.

"Because of what you did.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"You don't know what she did.""

Andre stepped closer.

"Enough.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You think you know Nia?""

The question struck harder than Andre expected.

"You loved the woman she became after leaving me.""

Marcus pointed toward the photograph.

"But you don't know who she was before.""

Ben looked at the picture.

"My mom was still my mom.""

Marcus went quiet.

For a moment, something almost human crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

"I wanted my son.""

Andre's voice turned cold.

"You didn't even know if he was yours.""

Marcus looked at the paternity test.

"I believed he was.""

"Belief doesn't make you a father.""

Marcus stared at him.

"No.""

He looked at Ben.

"Love does.""

Nobody spoke.

Because the cruelest part was that Marcus sounded sincere.

That made him more dangerous.

Andre grabbed the document.

"Who is the father?""

Tanya looked at Ben.

Then away.

Andre felt his patience disappear.

"Who?""

Tanya whispered:

"Someone you know.""

Ben's breathing changed.

Andre stared.

"Someone I know?""

Tanya nodded.

"Nia never wanted anyone to know.""

"Why?""

"Because she was afraid of what would happen.""

Andre stepped closer.

"What happened?""

Tanya looked at Ben.

"Your father...""

She stopped.

Ben whispered:

"My father what?""

Tanya covered her mouth.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Maya stood there.

Her face was pale.

"I heard everything.""

Andre's heart sank.

"Maya...""

She looked at Ben.

Then at Tanya.

"Mom.""

Her voice shook.

"What did you do?""

Tanya looked devastated.

"Maya, go upstairs.""

"No.""

Maya wiped her eyes.

"You always told me Ben wasn't really your family.""

Ben looked at her.

Maya continued.

"You said Dad only cared about him because he felt guilty.""

Andre felt anger rise.

"Tanya?""

Tanya looked away.

Maya shook her head.

"I believed you.""

She looked at Ben.

"I'm sorry.""

Ben didn't respond.

He looked exhausted.

Andre placed a hand on his shoulder.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Andre answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

"Andre Whitfield?""

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"The man who should have told you the truth seven years ago.""

Andre's face changed.

Everyone watched him.

"Where are you?""

The voice continued.

"I was afraid Nia would never get the chance.""

Andre gripped the phone.

"Tell me your name.""

The man breathed out.

Then said:

"I'm David Fields.""

Andre froze.

Ben looked confused.

"Who is that?""

Andre didn't answer.

Because he knew that name.

David Fields.

Nia's older brother.

The man who disappeared after her funeral.

The man everyone thought had abandoned the family.

The voice continued:

"Andre, you need to know something.""

"What?""

A pause.

Then:

May you like

"Ben has been living with the wrong story his entire life.""

The call ended.
