Chapter 4: The Letter That Changed Everything

Andre read the sentence again.
Then again.
His eyes moved across the paper, but his mind refused to accept the words.
"If you are reading this, it means Tanya found a way to keep me silent...""
His fingers tightened around the letter.
Ben stood beside him, watching his father's face change.
"Dad?""
Andre looked up.
The fear in his son's eyes almost broke him.
He folded the letter slightly.
"Son, I need you to know something.""
Ben shook his head.
"No.""
The word came out quickly.
"I don't want another person telling me something I can't handle.""
Andre stopped.
Because Ben wasn't acting like a child anymore.
He was a thirteen-year-old boy who had spent years living inside other people's decisions.
Lena stepped closer.
"Ben, your mother loved you.""
Ben looked at her.
"Everyone says that.""
His voice cracked.
"But everyone keeps secrets.""
The room went quiet.
Andre looked at the letter.
He knew the truth would hurt.
But he also knew the lie had already hurt enough.
He unfolded the paper.
"Nia wrote this three weeks before she died.""
Ben sat down.
Lena placed a hand over her mouth.
Andre began reading.
"Andre, I don't know how much time I have left, but I need you to hear this from me, not from anyone else.""
His chest tightened.
"I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people. And because of those mistakes, someone is trying to take my son away from me.""
Andre stopped.
"Take him away?""
Ben whispered.
Andre continued.
"Tanya knows about my past. She knows things I never told you. She promised she would help me fix everything, but she used my fear against me.""
Lena closed her eyes.
Andre looked at her.
"You knew?""
The old woman nodded slowly.
"I knew Nia was scared.""
"Scared of Tanya?""
"Yes.""
Ben looked between them.
"Why?""
Lena took a breath.
"Because Tanya wasn't just your father's new wife.""
Andre frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Lena hesitated.
Then she answered.
"She was connected to someone from your mother's past.""
The room became silent.
Andre stared.
"Who?""
Before Lena could answer, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face immediately changed.
"No.""
Andre noticed.
"Who is it?""
Lena didn't answer.
The phone continued vibrating.
Ben looked nervous.
"Grandma?""
Finally, Lena answered.
She didn't say hello.
She just listened.
Then her face turned pale.
"I told you I wouldn't stay quiet forever.""
A pause.
Her hand started shaking.
"No. You don't get to threaten me anymore.""
Andre stood.
"Who is that?""
Lena ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
Then she looked at Andre.
"It's someone who knows exactly what happened to Nia.""
"Who?""
Lena looked toward Ben.
"I think it's time you know.""
She walked to the cabinet and pulled out another box.
This one was older.
The wood was scratched.
The corners were worn.
She placed it on the table.
Inside were newspaper clippings, old photographs, and documents.
Andre picked up the first picture.
His stomach dropped.
It showed Nia standing beside a man.
A man Andre had never seen before.
On the back was a name.
Marcus Vale.
"Who is he?""
Lena looked at Ben.
"Your mother's first husband.""
Andre froze.
"What?""
Ben stared.
"My mom was married before?""
Lena nodded.
"Before she met you.""
Andre looked back at the picture.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because Marcus was dangerous.""
The word hung in the air.
Andre felt anger rising.
"Why was he near my family?""
Lena's eyes filled with tears.
"Because he was Ben's biological father.""
Nobody moved.
Ben stared.
Like he hadn't understood the words.
"What?""
Andre immediately looked at him.
"Ben—"
"No.""
The boy stepped back.
"No, that's not true.""
Lena reached toward him.
"Ben, listen—"
"My dad is my dad.""
Andre's heart shattered.
He walked toward his son.
"Always.""
Ben looked at him.
"Then why didn't anyone tell me?""
Andre had no answer.
Because that was the question haunting him too.
Lena wiped her eyes.
"Nia wanted to tell you.""
"Then why didn't she?""
"Because Marcus found her.""
Andre looked at the letter.
The words suddenly felt heavier.
"Someone is trying to take my son away from me.""
"Marcus threatened her?""
Lena nodded.
"He wanted custody of Ben.""
Andre felt sick.
"And Tanya?""
Lena looked down.
"Tanya knew Marcus.""
A cold silence filled the room.
Andre picked up the photograph again.
"How?""
Lena didn't answer immediately.
Then she whispered:
"Because Tanya wasn't protecting you from Nia's secrets.""
May you like
She looked directly at him.
"She was protecting Marcus.""
