Chapter 2: The Picture Hidden in the Envelope

Andre stared at the photograph.
The dining room suddenly felt too small.
The faces around him blurred, but one person remained perfectly clear.
Nia.
Ben's mother.
Alive.
Smiling.
Holding a tiny baby wrapped in a blue blanket.
Andre's fingers tightened around the photograph.
That wasn't possible.
Nia had died when Ben was six years old.
He had stood beside her hospital bed.
He had held her hand.
He had watched the machines go silent.
But the woman in the photograph was unmistakably Nia.
Older than the pictures he had kept in the house.
Healthier.
Alive.
Ben saw his father's face.
"Dad?""
Andre looked at him.
"Where did you get this?""
"It was inside the card.""
Ben stepped closer.
"That's Mom, right?""
Nobody spoke.
Tanya suddenly reached forward.
"Give me that.""
Andre moved the picture away.
"No.""
"Andre, you're misunderstanding something.""
"Am I?""
Her voice became sharper.
"You don't know the whole story.""
"Then explain it.""
The children sat frozen.
Maya whispered:
"Mom, what is happening?""
Tanya ignored her.
Andre looked at the photograph again.
On the back, written in blue ink, was a date.
Seven years earlier.
Two months after Nia's supposed death.
His heart sank.
Seven years.
Seven years ago, someone had taken this picture.
Someone knew.
Someone had lied.
"Where is this from?"" Andre asked.
Tanya didn't answer.
"Where is this from?""
"I don't know.""
The lie came too quickly.
Andre laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
"You expect me to believe that?""
Tanya's face tightened.
"Yes.""
"Your name is on the household folder where I found it.""
"So?""
"So why is my dead wife's picture hidden in a folder you control?""
Ben stepped backward.
"My mom was alive?""
His voice was barely audible.
Everyone looked at him.
Andre immediately softened.
"No, son—"
"Was she?""
Andre hated that question.
Because he didn't have an answer.
He had spent seven years telling Ben the same story.
That his mother loved him.
That she had fought to stay.
That her death wasn't anyone's fault.
Now, one photograph had opened a door he thought was permanently closed.
Tanya walked around the table.
"Ben, listen to me.""
The boy moved away.
"No.""
"Benjamin—"
"Did you know?""
The question was simple.
But it destroyed the room.
Tanya stopped.
Andre saw it.
The hesitation.
The tiny pause before the answer.
And that was enough.
"You knew.""
Tanya looked at him.
"Andre—"
"You knew.""
"I knew something.""
Ben's face changed.
"What does that mean?""
Tanya closed her eyes.
Then opened them.
"I found out years ago that Nia had secrets.""
Andre stared.
"My wife was dead.""
"Yes.""
"So what secrets?""
Tanya looked at Ben.
"I wasn't sure if I should tell him.""
"Tell him what?""
Nobody answered.
Andre's voice became dangerous.
"Tanya.""
She finally spoke.
"Nia didn't die the way you think.""
The room went silent.
Ben covered his mouth.
Andre felt like the floor had disappeared.
"What are you saying?""
"I'm saying your wife wasn't the person you thought she was.""
The words were cruel.
Calculated.
And Andre hated that part of him wanted to believe them.
Because believing Tanya would be easier than believing something impossible.
But then Ben spoke.
"My mom left me?""
Everyone turned.
His eyes were full of fear.
"Is that what you're saying?""
Andre immediately shook his head.
"No.""
But Ben wasn't looking at him.
He was looking at Tanya.
"Did she leave because she didn't want me?""
Tanya opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt worse than any answer.
Andre walked toward his son.
"Ben, your mother loved you.""
"Then why didn't she come back?""
Andre didn't know.
For the first time in seven years, he didn't know.
Later that night, after Maya and Caleb went upstairs, Andre sat alone in his office.
The photograph was on his desk.
Beside it was Nia's old wedding ring box.
He stared at the woman in the picture.
A knock came.
He expected Tanya.
Instead, Ben stood there.
His eyes were red.
"Dad?""
Andre turned.
"Come here.""
Ben sat across from him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Ben asked:
"Did Mom really love me?""
Andre felt his throat tighten.
"More than anything.""
"Then why does everyone keep hiding things from me?""
That question stayed in the air.
Andre had no answer.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
But something made him pick up.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice answered.
Older.
Shaking.
"Andre?""
He stood immediately.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then:
"It's Lena.""
Ben looked up.
Andre put the phone on speaker.
"Where have you been?""
The woman started crying.
"I tried to reach Ben.""
Andre looked at the photograph.
"Why didn't you?""
Her voice broke.
"Because Tanya threatened me.""
The room went cold.
Ben stood up.
"What?""
Lena continued.
"Andre, you need to listen carefully.""
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
"Your wife didn't just hide a birthday card.""
Andre gripped the phone.
"What did she hide?""
May you like
Lena answered with four words.
"The truth about Nia.""
