Chapter 6: The Father Who Came Back

Andre called the police.
Tanya tried to stop him.
Not by grabbing his phone.
Not by yelling.
By doing something worse.
She looked terrified.
"Andre, you don't understand.""
He stared at her.
"No. I understand exactly.""
"You don't know what Marcus is capable of.""
"Then explain it.""
She looked toward Ben.
"Not in front of him.""
Ben stepped forward.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
"I'm tired of leaving the room.""
His voice was stronger now.
"If this is about me, I should know.""
Andre felt a painful pride.
His son was scared.
But he was standing.
Tanya slowly sat down.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she spoke.
"Marcus wasn't always dangerous.""
Andre crossed his arms.
"That doesn't matter.""
"It does.""
"Why?""
"Because Nia loved him once.""
Ben looked confused.
"My mom?""
Tanya nodded.
"Before your father.""
Andre hated hearing that.
But he stayed quiet.
"Nia married Marcus when she was young," Tanya continued.
"He was charming. Successful. Everyone thought he was perfect.""
"What happened?""
Tanya looked down.
"He changed.""
The room became still.
"He became controlling. Angry. He wanted everything his way.""
Ben whispered:
"Did he hurt her?""
Tanya didn't answer.
But her silence was enough.
Andre looked away.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because she was ashamed.""
Tanya looked at him.
"She thought you would see her differently.""
Andre felt his chest tighten.
He remembered Nia.
The nights she woke up from nightmares.
The moments she apologized for things that weren't her fault.
He had always wondered why.
Now he knew.
Tanya continued.
"When Marcus found out Nia had a new life with you, he wanted revenge.""
"Revenge?""
"He believed Ben belonged to him.""
Andre shook his head.
"Ben isn't property.""
Tanya nodded.
"I know.""
"Did Marcus hurt Nia?""
Tanya looked away.
"I don't know.""
The answer made Andre angry.
"You don't know?""
"I wasn't there.""
"But you knew enough to help him.""
Tanya's eyes filled.
"I made mistakes.""
Andre almost laughed.
"That's what you call it?""
A knock interrupted them.
Everyone froze.
The police weren't supposed to arrive yet.
Andre looked toward the door.
Another knock.
Slow.
Confident.
Like whoever stood outside knew they belonged there.
Ben stepped backward.
Andre moved in front of him.
"Tanya.""
She stood frozen.
"Do you know who that is?""
She didn't answer.
The door opened.
Not because someone unlocked it.
Because Tanya had forgotten to lock it.
A man stepped inside.
Tall.
Gray hair.
A calm smile.
He looked older than the photograph.
But Andre recognized him immediately.
Marcus Vale.
His eyes moved around the room.
Then landed on Ben.
For a moment, his expression softened.
"My son.""
Ben froze.
Andre stepped forward.
"Get out.""
Marcus looked at him.
"You must be Andre.""
"I said get out.""
Marcus smiled.
"I spent years trying to find my son.""
Andre's voice was cold.
"You don't get to call him that.""
Marcus looked past him.
At Ben.
"Nobody told you about me, did they?""
Ben didn't answer.
Marcus smiled sadly.
"They always did that.""
Andre noticed something.
Marcus wasn't angry.
He was acting like a victim.
Like he was the one who had been hurt.
"I know what they've told you," Marcus said.
Ben looked confused.
"They?""
Marcus nodded toward Tanya.
"Her.""
Tanya stepped forward.
"Marcus, leave.""
He looked at her.
"You still protect them?""
Andre looked between them.
"You two know each other very well.""
Marcus smiled.
"We have history.""
Ben looked at Tanya.
"What did you do?""
Tanya's face crumbled.
"I was trying to fix something.""
Marcus laughed softly.
"No, Tanya.""
He looked at her.
"You were trying to erase it.""
The room went silent.
Andre felt a chill.
"What does that mean?""
Marcus reached into his coat.
Ben immediately stepped back.
Andre prepared himself.
But Marcus didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a document.
An old legal paper.
He placed it on the table.
"This is the truth.""
Andre picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because the document wasn't about custody.
It wasn't about Marcus.
It was a paternity test.
Andre looked at the date.
Seven years ago.
Before Nia died.
The result was clear.
Marcus was not Ben's father.
Andre looked up.
Marcus was watching him.
And smiling.
"Now you understand.""
Ben's face went pale.
"Then who is my father?""
Nobody answered.
Marcus slowly turned toward Tanya.
And said:
"Tell him.""
Tanya's eyes filled with tears.
May you like
Because the secret she had buried for seven years was finally coming back.
And this time, there was nowhere left to hide.
