Chapter 8: The Brother I Never Knew
“My brother.””
The words echoed in my head.
Not because they were impossible.
Because somehow, after everything that had happened today, they were the only thing that still felt impossible.
I looked at Richard.
Then at Claire.
Then at Michael.
Nobody looked surprised.
That was the part that hurt the most.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
I laughed once.
A broken, empty sound.
“My whole life…”
I shook my head.
“My whole life, I was told I was an only child.””
Richard didn’t move.
“Because your father wanted it that way.””
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
Richard looked toward the photograph still lying on the floor.
“Because your brother was the reason your father started hiding things.””
I picked up the photograph.
My daughter.
Someone’s hand on her shoulder.
My vision blurred.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
I raised my voice.
“Where is my daughter?””
Claire immediately stood.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
My voice cracked.
“I don’t care who lied. I don’t care who was protecting who. My daughter is missing.””
Michael stepped forward.
“We’ll find her.””
I looked at him.
“You said that before.””
His expression changed.
Because he knew what I meant.
Eight years.
Eight years of believing Emily was my daughter alone.
Eight years of believing he was a stranger.
Eight years of secrets.
But right now, he was still the only other person in the room who understood what it felt like to lose a child.
I turned to Richard.
“Tell me his name.””
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“You know him.””
“No.””
“You do.””
Richard looked away.
“I knew him before I knew you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“Who is he?””
Her lips trembled.
“His name is Andrew.””
The name felt strangely familiar.
Not because I had heard it.
Because I hadn’t.
And that scared me.
“Andrew Walker.””
My own last name.
My own blood.
I looked at Richard.
“How?””
He sighed.
“Your father had a son before you.””
I shook my head.
“My father was married to my mother.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Nobody answered.
Until Richard finally said:
“Your father had a life before he met your mother.””
The words felt like a betrayal.
My father.
The man I worshipped.
The man who taught me honesty.
The man who always told me family mattered.
Had a son he never told me about.
I looked at the journal.
“How old was he?””
Richard’s face became serious.
“Older than you.””
I felt dizzy.
“Where is my mother?””
Nobody spoke.
That silence terrified me.
“What happened to my mother?””
Claire looked down.
“She knew.””
I turned slowly.
“What?””
“She knew about Andrew.””
My heart sank.
“She knew I had a brother?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Richard answered.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
He looked at the photograph.
“Of him.””
The room went quiet.
I grabbed the journal.
I flipped through pages faster.
There had to be something.
A clue.
A name.
Anything.
Then I found it.
A page near the back.
A section my father had written in darker ink.
*Andrew,*
I stopped.
My hands shook.
I read.
*I don’t know if you will ever forgive me. I don’t know if you will ever understand why I made the choices I made. But I need you to know that I loved you.*
I swallowed.
My father was writing to him.
*I tried to give you a better life. I tried to protect you from my mistakes. But every time I reached for you, you reached back with anger.*
I turned the page.
The next sentence made my blood run cold.
*The day you threatened Daniel was the day I knew I had failed both my sons.*
I looked up.
“Threatened me?””
Richard nodded.
“Years ago.””
“When?””
“Before you were married.””
I kept reading.
**Andrew believes Daniel took everything from him. My love. My company.
His place in this family. But Daniel never knew. Daniel was innocent.**
I felt something break inside me.
My whole life.
Someone hated me for something I didn’t even know existed.
A sound came from outside.
A car engine.
Everyone turned.
A black vehicle was parked near the driveway.
Michael moved toward the window.
“That’s him.””
I looked at him.
“You’re sure?””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“He wants us to see him.””
I moved toward the door.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, don’t.””
I looked at her.
“My daughter is out there.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I pulled away.
“You don’t know what I’m willing to do.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I do.””
A quiet moment passed.
“Because that’s exactly what Andrew wanted.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Richard looked at me.
“He doesn’t just want Emily.””
My blood ran cold.
“He wants you.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because your father chose you.””
The words felt familiar.
Too familiar.
“Chose me for what?””
Richard looked at the journal.
“The journal.””
I frowned.
“What about it?””
Richard stepped closer.
“Your father didn’t write that journal to expose Andrew.””
I looked down.
“Then why?””
“He wrote it to prepare you.””
“For what?””
Richard looked toward the car outside.
“For the day Andrew came back.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Not mine.
Not Claire’s.
Michael reached into his pocket.
His face changed when he saw the screen.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
The phone continued ringing.
Then he handed it to me.
Unknown number.
My hands tightened.
I answered.
“Where is my daughter?””
Silence.
Then a voice.
A voice that sounded calm.
Almost familiar.
“Hello, Daniel.””
I froze.
Because I had never heard that voice before.
But somehow…
I recognized it.
“You have something I need.””
I looked at the journal.
“Andrew?””
A pause.
Then a quiet laugh.
“So Dad finally told you about me.””
My jaw tightened.
“Where is Emily?””
“She’s safe.””
“Let me talk to her.””
Another pause.
Then I heard it.
A small voice.
“Daddy?””
My knees almost gave out.
“Emily!””
“I’m okay.””
Her voice was shaking.
“Daddy, I’m sorry.””
“No, sweetheart. Don’t be sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“Stay calm. I’m coming.””
Andrew came back on the phone.
“You see?””
His voice was softer.
“She trusts you.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What do you want?””
“The journal.””
“I don’t have it.””
A pause.
Then he laughed.
“Daniel.””
His voice changed.
“You have no idea what you’re holding.””
I looked at the journal.
“What is it?””
“The truth.””
“About what?””
“About why Dad chose you.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
Silence.
Then Andrew said:
“Because you’re not his only son.””
My heart stopped.
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“You don’t.””
A pause.
“Because I’m not his only secret.””
The room went completely still.
“What are you talking about?””
Andrew answered:
“Ask your mother why she lied about how you were born.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What?””
Then the call ended.
I stood frozen.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone saw it.
Everyone saw the same realization hit me.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Another piece of my life that wasn’t what I thought.
Claire looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward her slowly.
“Why would he say that?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her face crumpled.
May you like
And then she whispered the words I was not prepared to hear.
“Because Andrew might be telling the truth.””
