Chapter 6: The Pages My Father Hid

I stared at the sentence until the words stopped looking real.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Claire failed to keep you away from the truth.*

My fingers tightened around the journal.

For years, I had believed my father left this world with unfinished business.

Now I realized something worse.

He had left me a message.

A warning.

And somehow, the person I trusted most had been standing between me and it.

I slowly looked at Claire.

She looked like she had been expecting this moment for years.

“Claire.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“What does this mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Emily was still standing beside the bed, clutching the journal against her chest.

“Daddy…”

I immediately softened.

“Sweetheart, give me that.””

She hesitated.

“Is this Grandpa’s?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why was it hidden?””

That question hurt.

Because I didn’t know.

I had no answer for my own daughter.

I walked over and gently took the journal from her.

“You did the right thing by bringing it to me.””

Emily looked at Claire.

“Mom knew about it?””

Nobody spoke.

And that silence told her everything.

Her little face changed.

Children don’t understand adult secrets.

But they understand when something is wrong.

“Mom?””

Claire stepped toward her.

“Emily…”

But Emily moved closer to me.

Not away from Claire.

Not completely.

But enough.

And I saw the pain on my wife’s face.

The same pain I felt.

Richard appeared in the doorway.

He looked at the journal.

And for the first time since I met him, he looked genuinely worried.

“Open it.””

I turned sharply.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

His eyes stayed on the journal.

“You have no idea what’s inside.””

“Then why do you want it?””

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“Because your father wrote my name in it.””

The room became silent.

Michael stepped forward.

“You never told me that.””

Richard ignored him.

His attention stayed on me.

“Your father discovered things about me.””

I opened the journal.

The first pages were filled with my father’s handwriting.

Neat.

Careful.

The same handwriting I remembered from birthday cards and notes he left on the kitchen table.

The first entry was dated eight years ago.

I read the first line.

*I was wrong about Richard Hayes.*

My eyes moved up.

Richard’s face changed.

“You see?””

I kept reading.

**I believed he was simply ambitious. I believed his actions were driven by greed. But I was wrong.

Greed has limits. Richard does not.**

I looked at Richard.

He didn’t look angry.

He looked uncomfortable.

That scared me.

Because anger was predictable.

Fear wasn’t.

I continued.

*The problem is not the money. The problem is the people he has hurt to get it.*

Claire covered her mouth.

Michael stared at the floor.

I turned the page.

There were names.

Dates.

Locations.

Records.

My father had been documenting everything.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Richard answered.

“Because he thought he could stop me.””

I looked at him.

“Did he?””

Richard didn’t reply.

That was the first time I saw uncertainty on his face.

I turned another page.

Then another.

Until I saw a name.

A name that made my stomach twist.

*Claire Bennett.*

My eyes moved across the page.

*Claire tried to leave. Richard knows. He will not let her disappear.*

I looked at my wife.

She looked away.

“You knew.””

The words came out quietly.

“You knew my father was investigating him.””

Claire nodded.

“I found out later.””

“Later?””

She swallowed.

“After you and I met.””

I stared.

“You knew there was a connection.””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her answer was immediate.

“Because I loved you.””

I wanted to believe her.

God, I wanted to.

But love didn’t erase what happened.

Love didn’t bring back the years of truth she had taken from me.

I looked back at the journal.

There was another entry.

This one had been underlined.

*If Daniel ever learns about this, he must understand one thing: Claire is not the person he should fear.*

I stopped.

My breathing changed.

I read it again.

*Claire is not the person he should fear.*

I looked at Claire.

She looked just as confused.

“What does that mean?””

Richard suddenly moved.

“Give me the journal.””

I turned.

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You don’t.””

The calm mask disappeared for a moment.

“The journal doesn’t tell you everything.””

“Then tell me.””

Richard looked at me.

“Your father trusted the wrong person.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You said that already.””

“Because it’s true.””

He looked at Claire.

“She wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

Nobody moved.

I felt my chest tighten.

“What are you saying?””

Richard looked toward Michael.

And Michael immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“You should ask him.””

I looked at Michael.

“What?””

Michael shook his head.

“Don’t listen to him.””

“That’s the second time someone has told me that today.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m tired of being the only person who doesn’t know what’s happening.””

Michael looked away.

And that was when I realized.

He was hiding something too.

“What did my father know about you?””

Michael remained silent.

“Answer me.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Your father knew I was Emily’s father.””

The room stopped.

Even Claire looked shocked.

“What?””

Michael looked at her.

“I was going to tell Daniel.””

“When?””

“Before Emily was born.””

Claire’s expression hardened.

“You promised.””

Michael looked hurt.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You were trying to control the situation.””

I stepped back.

My mind was drowning.

My father knew.

Michael knew.

Claire knew.

Everyone knew except me.

I looked at the journal again.

My father’s handwriting suddenly felt different.

Not like a memory.

Like a warning.

I flipped forward.

Toward the final pages.

There were only a few entries left.

The last one was written three days before he died.

The handwriting was messier.

The ink darker.

Like his hands were shaking.

*I finally know who has been helping Richard.*

I froze.

The next sentence was underlined so heavily that the paper had almost torn.

*It is someone inside my own family.*

My heart dropped.

I looked around the room.

At Claire.

At Michael.

At Richard.

Someone inside my family.

Someone close.

I turned the page.

The rest was missing.

The page had been ripped out.

I looked at the torn edge.

“No.””

Richard stepped closer.

“That page is the reason I came here.””

I looked at him.

“Who took it?””

Nobody answered.

Then I heard a sound.

A small sound.

A notification.

From Emily’s tablet on the bed.

Everyone turned.

The screen lit up.

A message had appeared.

Unknown sender.

I picked it up.

The message contained only one line.

*Your father never finished the last page because he saw who was standing behind him.*

My hands went cold.

Another message arrived.

This one was a photograph.

I opened it.

And my entire body froze.

It was a picture of my father’s study.

Taken the night he died.

May you like

And standing behind my father…

Was Claire.
