Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Door
For several seconds, nobody breathed.
The message on my phone glowed in my hand.
*Don’t let Michael reach the door.*
Five words.
A warning.
Or a threat.
I read it again.
Then again.
My mind searched for an explanation.
A prank.
A mistake.
Someone trying to scare me.
But deep down, I already knew.
This wasn’t random.
Too many impossible things had happened in a single afternoon.
My daughter nearly drowned.
A stranger appeared in my backyard.
My wife’s hidden past walked into my home.
And now someone was watching us.
Someone close enough to know Michael was here.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Everyone was staring at me.
Claire.
Michael.
Even Emily.
“What is it?”” Claire whispered.
I didn’t answer immediately.
I looked toward the front door.
The doorbell rang again.
This time, louder.
My daughter flinched.
“Daddy…”
I immediately walked to her.
“It’s okay, sweetheart.””
But my voice didn’t sound convincing.
Because I wasn’t sure it was okay anymore.
I placed my phone in my pocket.
“Emily, go upstairs.””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Sweetheart—”
“I don’t want to leave you.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Eight years old.
And she was scared.
Really scared.
I knelt beside her.
“Listen to me. You are the bravest person I know.””
She shook her head.
“I’m scared.””
I brushed wet hair away from her face.
“I know.””
That was the truth.
I didn’t tell her not to be afraid.
Because sometimes fear was the only thing keeping us alive.
“I need you to go upstairs and lock your bedroom door.””
She looked at me.
“Are you going to be okay?””
I forced a smile.
“I’m your dad. I’m always okay.””
It was a lie.
But parents tell those lies because children need them.
Emily slowly nodded.
Before she walked away, she grabbed my hand.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“The man who pushed me…”
Her voice became smaller.
“He wasn’t trying to scare me.””
A chill moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
She looked toward Claire.
Then Michael.
“He said he needed me to remember.””
My heart stopped.
“Remember what?””
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then she ran upstairs.
I watched until she disappeared.
Only then did I turn back.
“What is happening?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Michael.
“You knew about this.””
“No.””
“You knew someone was after her.””
“I knew someone was hiding something.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Michael stepped closer.
His voice lowered.
“I came here because I thought Claire was in danger.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You thought Claire was in danger?””
I pointed toward the stairs.
“My daughter almost died.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t get to walk into my house after eight years and act like you’re the only one who cares.””
Michael looked down.
For the first time, he didn’t look like a mysterious stranger.
He looked like a man carrying regret.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I know I don’t get to do that.””
Claire wiped her tears.
“Daniel, please.””
I turned toward her.
“Please what?””
She looked exhausted.
“Please don’t do this now.””
I stared at her.
“Someone tried to hurt our daughter.””
“Our daughter.””
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
Claire closed her eyes.
Because she knew exactly what I meant.
A silence followed.
Then Michael spoke.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something you need to know.””
I almost laughed.
“Something else?””
His jaw tightened.
“Emily wasn’t the only person who received a warning.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
He reached into his jacket again.
This time he pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this three days ago.””
He handed it to me.
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was messy.
Rushed.
Only one sentence.
*She was never supposed to survive.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Michael’s face was pale.
“I don’t know.””
Claire suddenly grabbed the paper from my hand.
The second she saw it, all color drained from her face.
“You’ve seen this before.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked frozen.
“Claire?””
Her fingers trembled.
“I…”
Michael stepped forward.
“You recognize the handwriting.””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I felt something crack inside me.
“How long?””
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel—”
“How long have you known something was wrong?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
“Then explain.””
She sat down slowly.
For the first time all day, my wife looked older.
Like she had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“I started receiving letters six months ago.””
The room went silent.
My stomach dropped.
“Letters?””
Claire nodded.
“They said someone knew about Michael.””
I looked at Michael.
Then back at her.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I thought it would stop.””
“You thought?””
Her voice broke.
“I thought if I ignored it, whoever it was would get tired.””
I stared at her.
“You ignored threats?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Claire looked away.
Because she knew I was right.
Michael walked toward the window.
“Whoever did this wanted Claire silent.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
That bothered me.
“Why?””
He finally turned around.
“Because the truth about Emily isn’t the only secret.””
The words felt like a punch.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
“Tell him.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Claire.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice hardened.
“You can’t keep doing this.””
I stepped between them.
“Stop talking like I’m not here.””
Nobody spoke.
I pointed at Claire.
“I want the truth.””
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered,
“Before Emily was born…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“Before you and I met…”
My heart began pounding.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“I was involved with someone.””
I stared.
“You mean Michael.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I already knew that.
But hearing it from her still hurt.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Michael wasn’t the only person.””
The room became completely silent.
I felt the air disappear.
“What?””
Claire looked down.
“There was someone else.””
Michael’s expression changed.
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“I never told you.””
His face hardened.
“Told me what?””
She swallowed.
“There was another man who knew about Emily.””
My mind raced.
Another man?
Another secret?
Another person connected to my daughter?
“Who?””
Claire didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who was he?””
She whispered the name.
And the second I heard it, Michael went completely still.
Because he recognized it.
“Daniel…”
Claire’s voice shook.
“He’s the reason I ran.””
I stared at her.
“Ran from who?””
She looked toward the front door.
Toward the person waiting outside.
May you like
Then she said:
“The man standing on the other side of that door.””
