Chapter 4: The Man Outside the Door

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.

The words were too impossible.

Too strange.

Too terrifying.

“The man standing on the other side of that door?””

My own voice sounded unfamiliar.

Claire didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Her eyes were fixed on the entrance.

The fear on her face told me everything.

I slowly turned toward the front door.

The hallway suddenly felt longer.

Darker.

Like the house I had lived in for eight years had transformed into a place I didn’t recognize.

“Claire,” I said quietly.

“Who is he?””

Her lips trembled.

“I thought he was gone.””

That sentence sent a cold wave through my body.

Not I don’t know him.

Not this is a misunderstanding.

I thought he was gone.

I looked at Michael.

His expression had changed completely.

The confidence was gone.

The anger was gone.

Now he looked afraid.

“You knew he was alive?”” Michael asked.

Claire looked at him.

“No.””

“Then why did you say that?””

She didn’t respond.

The doorbell rang again.

This time, nobody moved.

I walked slowly toward the entrance.

“Daniel, wait.””

It was Claire.

I stopped.

I turned around.

“Why?””

She struggled to find the words.

“Because if it’s him…”

She swallowed.

“You don’t know what he’s capable of.””

I stared at her.

A thousand questions burned inside me.

“What exactly did you bring into my life, Claire?””

The pain on her face was immediate.

But I couldn’t stop.

Not anymore.

“My daughter almost died today.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“You don’t get to say you know.””

The room went silent.

“I spent eight years believing I knew my family.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Believing Emily was safe.””

Then back at her.

“Believing my wife had no secrets.””

Claire looked down.

“I was wrong.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

Before I could say anything else, a sound came from outside.

A knock.

Three slow knocks.

Not impatient.

Not angry.

Almost polite.

Michael moved toward me.

“Don’t open it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he wants you to.””

That made me pause.

“What does that mean?””

Michael stared at the door.

“He doesn’t show up unless he already knows the outcome.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“You’re saying he planned this?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Claire.

“Who is he?””

She whispered the answer.

“Richard.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way she said it made it feel dangerous.

“Richard who?””

She didn’t answer.

Then the person outside spoke.

And every muscle in my body froze.

“Claire.””

The voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“I know you’re in there.””

My wife stepped backward.

Michael immediately moved closer to the wall.

Like he was preparing for a fight.

The man outside continued.

“I didn’t come here to hurt anyone.””

I looked at Claire.

She was shaking.

The person outside laughed softly.

“You always say that, don’t you?””

Claire covered her mouth.

A memory.

A painful one.

I could see it on her face.

“Who is he?”” I whispered.

She looked at me.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, I saw something stronger than fear.

Shame.

“He was my fiancé.””

The words hit me.

I didn’t respond.

I couldn’t.

My wife had been married before.

Now a stranger claimed to be Emily’s father.

And there was another man.

A fiancé.

A person who had been hidden from me.

I felt like I was standing in the middle of a life that belonged to someone else.

“You were engaged?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Before Michael.””

I stared.

“And before me.””

“Yes.””

“How many secrets are there?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

The voice outside came again.

“Claire.””

A pause.

“Open the door.””

Nobody moved.

Then Richard spoke again.

“I know Michael is there.””

Michael’s face changed.

“How?””

No one answered.

The man outside continued.

“And I know your husband finally knows.””

My blood ran cold.

“How does he know that?”” I asked.

Michael looked toward the windows.

“He’s been watching.””

I moved toward the curtains.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

“Because he wants you angry.””

I pulled away.

“I’m already angry.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“But you don’t understand him.””

The knock came again.

This time harder.

“Claire.””

The calm voice disappeared.

“You have five minutes.””

Michael whispered,

“He hasn’t changed.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Michael stared at the door.

“It means he thinks everyone belongs to him.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

“Tell me.””

Claire sat down on the couch.

Her hands were shaking.

“Richard was my first love.””

I waited.

“He was charming.””

Her eyes became distant.

“At first.””

That phrase told me everything.

“At first?””

She nodded.

“Then things changed.””

The room was quiet except for Richard’s footsteps outside.

Slow.

Measured.

“I tried to leave.””

Claire looked at Michael.

“That’s when I met him.””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“I thought I could protect her.””

“But you couldn’t,” Claire whispered.

Michael didn’t argue.

I looked at them.

“What did Richard do?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“Everything.””

She looked at me.

“He knew where I lived. Where I worked. Who I talked to.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

Claire laughed sadly.

“Because he always made sure there was no proof.””

The front door handle moved.

Everyone froze.

Richard was trying to open it.

But it was locked.

Emily screamed from upstairs.

“Daddy!””

I ran toward the stairs.

But before I reached them, Richard spoke.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

Hearing my name from him made my skin crawl.

“You should listen carefully.””

I turned toward the door.

“How do you know my name?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I’ve been watching your family longer than you realize.””

Claire whispered,

“No…”

Richard continued.

“You think today was about Emily.””

The silence grew heavier.

“It wasn’t.””

I stared at the door.

“What are you talking about?””

His voice lowered.

“Your daughter was never the target.””

My heart stopped.

I looked upstairs.

Then back at the door.

“Then who was?””

Nobody answered.

Richard did.

“You.””

The hallway seemed to shrink around me.

Me.

Not Emily.

Me.

I looked at Claire.

She looked devastated.

Like she had been waiting years for this moment.

“Why me?””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Because Daniel…”

A pause.

“You have something that belongs to me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

His answer came immediately.

Something that made Michael’s face lose all color.

May you like

Something that made Claire whisper my name in horror.

“Your father’s journal.””
