Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
I read the message again.
Then again.
Until the words stopped looking like words.
SHE DIDN’T DIE IN THE CRASH.
My mind rejected it.
Because some truths are too impossible to accept.
Danielle was dead.
I had seen the hospital room.
I had seen the machines.
I had seen the funeral.
I had held her daughter in my arms and promised her I would be enough.
But Richard was standing in front of me.
And Richard had spent years lying.
So I asked the only question that mattered.
“Where is she?””
Richard looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I laughed.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“It’s the truth.””
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
His expression changed.
“I expect you to believe Danielle.””
He pointed at the phone.
“She sent that.””
I looked down.
The number was blocked.
Impossible.
“Where did you get this?””
“I didn’t.””
“Then how do you know?””
Richard didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
I grabbed his shirt.
“Where is my wife?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Marcus.””
“Where is she?””
“I don’t know.””
I pushed him away.
“You destroyed my family.””
His voice cracked.
“I know.””
“You helped Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“You helped Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone had the same excuse.
Fear.
Fear.
Fear.
But fear did not erase a mother.
Fear did not steal a childhood.
Fear did not leave a little girl believing her mother was someone people wanted forgotten.
I stepped back.
“What happened that night?””
Richard finally answered.
“Danielle found the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The evidence that Daniel and I were moving money.””
My jaw tightened.
“So you admit it.””
“Yes.””
The confession came so easily that it shocked me.
“Why?””
“Because we thought we could fix it.””
I stared.
“Fix stealing?””
“We thought we could replace the money.””
“And when you couldn’t?””
Richard looked away.
“Daniel created a plan.””
My stomach turned.
“The custody plan.””
“Yes.””
“And Danielle found out.””
“Yes.””
“What happened next?””
Richard sat down.
“She called me.””
“Why you?””
“Because she thought I was the only one who might help her.””
I almost felt sick.
“She trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“And you betrayed her.””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Richard rubbed his face.
“She told me she had copies of everything.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
He looked at me.
“Danielle never told anyone everything.””
A thought hit me.
“The box.””
Richard looked surprised.
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
“She knew Vanessa would look for it.””
I froze.
“What?””
Richard nodded.
“Danielle knew Vanessa was involved.””
The anger came back.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she wasn’t sure how deep it went.””
I thought about Vanessa.
The lies.
The guilt.
The fear.
Then something clicked.
“Wait.””
I looked at Richard.
“Why did Vanessa stay?””
Richard said nothing.
“Why would she marry me if she was only planted?””
Silence.
Then Richard answered.
“Because Daniel told her Danielle was dead because of you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He convinced her you caused it.””
I felt sick.
“How?””
Richard looked away.
“He showed her evidence.””
“Fake evidence.””
“Yes.””
“So she believed I killed my own wife?””
Richard nodded.
“And she still married me?””
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“She thought she was protecting Nia.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I remembered Vanessa’s confession.
I was scared.
I thought Daniel would destroy us.
A terrible person.
But maybe not a simple one.
Maybe someone who had been manipulated too.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, a video.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a hospital room.
My breath stopped.
Danielle.
Older.
Paler.
But alive.
She was sitting beside a window.
Looking directly at the camera.
My knees almost gave out.
“Marcus.””
Her voice.
After eleven years.
Her actual voice.
I couldn’t breathe.
“If you are seeing this, then I’m sorry.””
Tears filled my eyes.
Danielle continued.
“I wanted to come home.””
I covered my mouth.
“But I couldn’t.””
The video shook slightly.
She looked afraid.
“Daniel and Richard made everyone believe I was gone.””
My heart broke.
“Not because they wanted me dead.””
A pause.
“Because they wanted you to believe I was dead.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Danielle looked away.
“Because the person they were afraid of wasn’t me.””
A sound came from behind me.
Vanessa.
She had entered the office.
She was watching the video.
Her face had gone completely white.
Danielle continued.
“The person they were afraid of was Nia.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
And for once, she didn’t hide.
She didn’t run.
She didn’t lie.
She whispered:
“Marcus…”
Her voice broke.
“Danielle wasn’t running from them.””
A tear fell down her face.
“She was hiding from what she discovered about Nia.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the frozen video.
“Your daughter wasn’t just the reason Danielle fought.””
She swallowed.
“She was the reason someone wanted Danielle gone.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“Because Nia inherited something.””
I couldn’t speak.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Something Daniel and Richard killed for.””
A knock came from the office door.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Everyone froze.
Then a woman’s voice came from the other side.
A voice I knew.
A voice I had dreamed of hearing for eleven years.
“Marcus?””
My heart stopped.
May you like
The door opened.
And Danielle Carter walked in.
