Chapter 5: The Truth Vanessa Buried
Nobody spoke after Evelyn placed the envelope on the table.
Not even Vanessa.
Especially not Vanessa.
The name written across the front felt heavier than any accusation.
IF VANESSA FINDS THIS.
I looked at my wife.
She looked at the envelope like it was something alive.
Something dangerous.
“Nobody opens that,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Her lips parted.
No answer.
“Why, Vanessa?””
She looked away.
And that was the moment I stopped seeing the woman I married.
Because the woman I married would have fought to explain.
She would have demanded I listen.
She would have told me I misunderstood.
This woman was afraid of a piece of paper.
I picked up the envelope.
Vanessa moved.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
That one word carried everything.
The disappointment.
The anger.
The betrayal.
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Marcus,
If Vanessa is the one who gives this to you, then I was wrong about her.
But if she tries to stop you from reading it, please understand this:
I was right.
My throat tightened.
I kept going.
Vanessa came into our lives after my concerns started.
At first, I believed she was kind.
I believed she cared about you.
I believed she cared about Nia.
But then things changed.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
I continued.
She started asking questions.
About our marriage.
About your finances.
About my health.
About custody.
About what would happen if I died.
My hand froze.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You asked Danielle about custody?””
She whispered.
“I was scared.””
I ignored the answer.
The letter continued.
She told me she was worried about Marcus.
She said he was struggling.
She said he was not stable enough to raise a child alone.
I closed my eyes.
Because those were the exact things the legal document claimed.
The exact accusations.
Someone had copied the story.
Someone had built it.
Danielle knew.
I read faster.
I confronted her.
She denied everything.
But after that conversation, important documents disappeared.
My medical records.
Marcus’s financial records.
Our private conversations.
Things only someone close to us could access.
The room felt freezing.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you steal from us?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“Then explain.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t take anything.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You don’t have to take something physically to use it.””
Vanessa glared.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I know enough.””
I looked back at the letter.
The next sentence stopped me.
I believe Vanessa is working with someone.
Someone who wants custody of Nia.
Someone who believes Marcus can be removed from the picture.
My stomach twisted.
“Who?””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Who wanted my daughter?””
Nobody answered.
Then my mother spoke.
“Marcus.””
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
I turned.
She looked terrified.
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“There was someone who kept visiting Danielle before she died.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
My mother looked at Vanessa.
“I thought I was wrong.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Ruth…”
“Who?””
My mother swallowed.
“Your brother.””
The room went completely silent.
My brother.
Daniel.
I hadn’t heard his name in years.
Not since we stopped speaking after Danielle’s funeral.
“No.””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“He came to see Danielle.””
“Why?””
My mother looked down.
“Because he wanted something.””
I felt anger rising.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Your company.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“My brother tried to take my daughter because of money?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“It wasn’t just money.””
She pointed at the letter.
I did.
Danielle’s handwriting became more urgent.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, I need you to understand something.
The person trying to destroy you is not acting alone.
Vanessa may be involved.
But she is not the person who started this.
My breathing stopped.
Not Vanessa.
Not the beginning.
Someone else.
Someone behind her.
I read the final lines.
I found proof.
I hid it where only you would look.
Do not trust anyone who says they are protecting you.
The truth is in the place where we made our first promise.
My first thought was our apartment.
But then I remembered.
Danielle and I had made many promises.
The hospital.
Our wedding.
Our first house.
Then I saw one more sentence.
The place where you first became a father.
My blood went cold.
The hospital.
Nia was born there.
I looked up.
“Where is Daniel?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Where is my brother?””
Her face changed.
And I knew.
She knew.
“You saw him.””
She whispered.
“Marcus…”
“You saw him.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The answer came from behind me.
Caleb.
“I saw Uncle Daniel.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa went pale.
“Caleb.””
The boy stepped into the room.
“I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to say.””
I crouched.
“When did you see him?””
He looked scared.
“Last month.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
“At our house.””
I stood.
“He came here?””
Caleb nodded.
“He and Mom were talking.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Caleb looked at her.
“You told him everything was almost finished.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Almost finished?””
She started crying.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No more explanations.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Take Nia upstairs.””
Evelyn nodded.
My mother followed.
Within seconds, only Vanessa and I remained.
The woman I loved.
The woman who had hidden my daughter’s memories.
The woman who knew more about Danielle’s death than she admitted.
“Tell me one thing.””
Vanessa looked up.
“What?””
“Did you love me?””
Her face collapsed.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you help destroy my life?””
She whispered:
“Because I thought if I didn’t, Daniel would destroy all of us.””
I froze.
“What?””
She looked toward the door.
“He threatened me.””
The words barely came out.
“He threatened Nia.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Your brother wasn’t trying to take your company.””
She swallowed.
“He was trying to take control of everything.””
I stepped closer.
“How?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because he knew something about Danielle’s death.””
A pause.
“And he knew something about you.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What?””
May you like
Her voice became a whisper.
“Something Danielle discovered the night she died.””
