Chapter 6: The Brother I Trusted

I did not sleep.

Not that night.

Not the next.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Danielle’s face.

Not the hospital.

Not the funeral.

The real Danielle.

The woman who danced in our kitchen while making breakfast.

The woman who sang off-key to make Nia laugh.

The woman who believed people were good until they proved otherwise.

And now I had to accept that someone close to us had been destroying everything she tried to protect.

At six in the morning, I found Vanessa sitting alone at the kitchen table.

The broken picture frame was still there.

She was holding one of the pieces of glass.

Not cutting herself.

Just staring.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

“You need to tell me everything.””

She looked up.

“I know.””

“No more half-truths.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

I sat across from her.

“Start with Daniel.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“When I met you, I didn’t know about him.””

“About what?””

“About what he wanted.””

She looked down.

“Daniel contacted me six months after Danielle died.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to help.””

I laughed quietly.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

“He hated me.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“You know that?””

I stared.

“Of course I knew.””

Daniel had always been jealous.

When I got married.

When I started my company.

When Danielle became pregnant.

He always smiled.

But there was something behind it.

Something I ignored.

“What did he tell you?””

Vanessa twisted her hands.

“He told me you were falling apart.””

I looked away.

“I was.””

“He said you needed someone stable.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was young.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You were not young enough to believe a stranger over the man you married.””

She looked down.

“I wanted to believe him.””

The honesty hurt more.

“Why?””

“Because I loved you.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

She looked at me.

“Because I thought if I became the person who saved you, you would never leave.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“Daniel told me Danielle had been preparing documents to remove you as Nia’s father.””

I stared.

“He lied.””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him.””

“At first.””

The words hit me.

“At first?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Then I found the documents.””

“The fake ones.””

“Yes.””

“And you still helped him.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer was barely audible.

I stood.

“You helped him.””

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

“I was scared because he showed me things.””

“What things?””

She looked at me.

“Bank records.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He showed me withdrawals from your company.””

I felt my anger shift.

“What withdrawals?””

“Money missing.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

I stared at her.

Because suddenly I remembered.

The missing files.

The unexplained accounting problems.

The year everything started falling apart.

I had blamed myself.

I thought I was failing.

But what if someone had been helping me fail?

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel said he could make the problems disappear.””

“By taking Nia?””

“He said custody would give him control.””

“Control over what?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your inheritance.””

I went still.

“My inheritance?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Danielle found out.””

“What?””

“She found out Daniel had been moving money.””

The kitchen felt smaller.

“And she was going to expose him.””

I looked toward the window.

The morning light came through.

Normal.

Peaceful.

A complete lie.

“What happened the night she died?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“Exactly?””

She swallowed.

“Daniel called me that night.””

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?””

“He asked where Danielle was.””

I stared.

“Why would he ask you that?””

“I don’t know.””

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t understand then.””

“What did you tell him?””

Vanessa whispered:

“I told him she was going to the hospital.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

“She was having problems with the pregnancy.””

I corrected her.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“She was already pregnant with Nia.””

“Yes.””

I felt something click.

“The night Danielle died was before Nia was born.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

I stood completely still.

“You said hospital.””

Her face changed.

Because she realized it too.

I stepped closer.

“Why would Daniel need to know where she was going?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Marcus…”

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because Danielle had found something.””

My voice dropped.

“What?””

“She found out Daniel had been meeting with someone.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Then my phone rang.

Both of us froze.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a voice.

Older.

Familiar.

A voice I had not heard in eleven years.

“Marcus.””

My blood turned cold.

“Daniel?””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“You finally opened the box.””

I couldn’t speak.

Vanessa stood.

Her face went white.

“How did you get this number?””

Daniel ignored the question.

“You should have listened to me.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

Another laugh.

“You still think this is about me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Ask your wife what happened the night Danielle died.””

The call went silent.

Then he added:

“She knows she wasn’t the only one who betrayed you.””

The line disconnected.

I stared at the phone.

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus…”

I looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw something I had missed for years.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Regret.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because if I tell you…”

She swallowed.

“You’ll never forgive me.””

A knock came from the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

I walked toward it.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because I think I know who it is.””

The door opened before I reached it.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying a file folder.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew him.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had stood beside me at Danielle’s funeral.

He looked at me and said:

“Marcus, you need to see what Danielle left behind.””

May you like

He held up the folder.

“And you need to see what I helped her hide.””
