Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Plan

Richard Hale answered the phone on the first ring.

That was the first thing that bothered me.

A man who had spent eleven years hiding secrets should not sound calm.

But Richard did.

“Marcus.””

His voice was warm.

Almost friendly.

The same voice I had heard a thousand times.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Why?””

I looked at the photograph on the table.

Richard standing beside Daniel.

Richard smiling at Danielle’s funeral.

Richard telling me he was sorry.

“I found some old documents.””

Silence.

Only for a second.

But I heard it.

Fear.

“Documents about what?””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“About Danielle.””

Another pause.

Then he sighed.

“Marcus, grief makes people search for answers that don’t exist.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Talk to me like I’m still the man you manipulated.””

The line went quiet.

Then Richard said:

“Who told you?””

I looked around the room.

Everyone was watching me.

“I know about Daniel.””

Silence.

“I know about the money.””

Nothing.

“I know Danielle was investigating.””

A longer silence.

Then Richard spoke.

“You need to be careful.””

My stomach turned.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“It’s advice.””

I laughed.

“From you?””

“Marcus, you don’t understand what you’re walking into.””

“Then explain.””

“You won’t like the truth.””

“Try me.””

Richard exhaled.

“I’ll meet you.””

“No.””

“Then you’ll keep guessing.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Where?””

“Your old office.””

The place where everything started.

The place where I had built my company.

The place where Daniel first worked beside me.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered Danielle’s letter.

The truth is in the place where we made our first promise.

“Fine.””

I hung up.

Vanessa stood immediately.

“You can’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to tell me what I can do.””

She flinched.

I hated that I noticed.

But I did.

Because once, that reaction would have broken my heart.

Now it just reminded me how much I didn’t know.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“You think I don’t understand why?””

Her eyes filled.

“I know you don’t trust me.””

“You lied to me for years.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

She wiped her face.

“But I know Richard.””

I stared.

“What?””

“I know how he thinks.””

“How?””

She looked down.

“Because he recruited me.””

The room went silent.

My anger disappeared.

Replaced by something worse.

Confusion.

“What?””

Vanessa sat down.

“Richard was the one who introduced me to Daniel.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel needed someone close to you.””

I stared.

“You.””

She nodded.

“I was supposed to become someone you trusted.””

The words were almost impossible to hear.

“You were planted.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“And you still married me.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because somewhere along the way, I stopped pretending.””

I said nothing.

“I fell in love with you.””

I looked away.

“That doesn’t fix anything.””

“I know.””

For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t explain.

She just accepted it.

That hurt more.

An hour later, I entered my old office.

The place had been empty for years.

Dust covered the furniture.

The walls still held faded photographs of a life I thought I understood.

Richard was standing by the window.

Older.

Gray hair.

Same confident posture.

“You came.””

I stared.

“You sound surprised.””

“I am.””

“Why?””

“Because I expected you to bring the police.””

I stepped closer.

“Should I have?””

Richard smiled sadly.

“You always were too trusting.””

I laughed.

“You say that like you didn’t use it.””

His smile disappeared.

“Fair.””

I held up the photograph.

“You and Daniel.””

Richard looked at it.

“He showed you.””

“Why?””

“Because he was scared.””

“Of what?””

Richard looked around the office.

“Of Danielle.””

I froze.

“She was smarter than anyone gave her credit for.””

“What did she find?””

Richard walked toward the desk.

“She found out Daniel wasn’t stealing alone.””

My heart stopped.

“Who else?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“You.””

The word hit like a weapon.

“What?””

“You were the one who moved the money.””

I stared.

“No.””

“You don’t remember.””

“I would remember.””

“Would you?””

Richard stepped closer.

“Marcus, after Danielle got sick, you signed things you never read.””

My breathing changed.

“You were exhausted.””

“No.””

“You trusted Daniel.””

“No.””

“You trusted me.””

I felt sick.

Because I remembered.

The late nights.

The paperwork.

The signatures.

The blank spaces.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Danielle discovered that you were being used.””

I stared.

“Then why frame me?””

“Because you were the perfect target.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

A hospital hallway.

Danielle.

Alive.

The date was the night she died.

Underneath was one sentence.

SHE DIDN’T DIE IN THE CRASH.

I looked up.

Richard was watching me.

“You finally found it.””

I held up the phone.

“Who sent this?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“The person who has been protecting you.””

My voice became quiet.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward the door.

May you like

And whispered:

“Danielle.””
