The Night I Stopped Begging / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Battle For The Truth

My attorney’s name was Julia Bennett.

She was younger than I expected.

Sharp eyes.

Calm voice.

The kind of person who made you feel like she had already seen every possible disaster.

She sat across from me in the hospital room while Derek waited outside.

“He cannot be present for this conversation,” she said.

I nodded.

“Good.””

Julia opened a folder.

“Claire, before we discuss custody and financial matters, I need to understand everything.””

I looked at the papers.

Everything.

That word felt impossible.

Because my entire marriage was built on things I didn’t know.

“He planned to use me,” I said.

Julia didn’t react.

“How?””

I explained.

The inheritance.

The email.

The secret relationship.

The money transfers.

The hotel.

Every piece.

When I finished, Julia closed the folder.

“Did he know you discovered this before you left?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I frowned.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

She leaned forward.

“Because his behavior afterward matters.””

“What do you mean?””

“If he believed you knew everything and still tried to manipulate you, that tells us one thing.””

“What?””

“He is calculated.””

I looked through the window.

Derek was sitting in the hallway.

Alone.

For once.

“Was he always like this?””

Julia looked at me.

“That’s a question only you can answer.””

I thought about it.

The small things.

The forgotten promises.

The excuses.

The way he made me feel guilty for needing him.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Julia nodded.

“Then this isn’t just about one event.””

“No.””

“It’s about a pattern.””

A pattern.

That word made everything click.

I had spent years collecting moments.

The missed appointments.

The cold comments.

The empty promises.

But I never connected them.

Because I loved him.

Love had made me treat every problem like an exception.

When really…

The problem was the person.

Julia finished explaining the next steps.

“We’ll need copies of everything.””

“I have them.””

She looked surprised.

“You do?””

I nodded.

“Emily’s sister gave me documents.””

Julia paused.

“Emily?””

I watched her expression change.

“You know about her?””

“I know enough.””

She wrote something down.

“Claire, one more thing.””

“What?””

“If Derek tries to contact you privately, don’t discuss legal matters.””

“Okay.””

“And don’t let him convince you that this can be solved with an apology.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“He’ll try.””

Julia nodded.

“They usually do.””

That evening, after everyone left, I sat alone with Emma.

The hospital room was dark except for the small lamp beside the bed.

I watched my daughter sleep.

And I finally allowed myself to grieve.

Not for Derek.

For the life I thought I had.

The family I thought I was building.

The future I imagined.

A knock came at the door.

I looked up.

Derek.

“I said I needed space.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you here?””

He stood there quietly.

“I wanted to say goodbye.””

That caught me off guard.

“Goodbye?””

He nodded.

“I know you’re done.””

I looked at him.

“I am.””

He swallowed.

“I deserve that.””

For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.

Because this was the version of Derek I had wanted.

The one who admitted he was wrong.

The one who looked broken.

But it came too late.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I looked away.

“You’re sorry because you got caught.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

He stepped closer.

“Because I lost you.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Not because he hurt me.

Not because he betrayed me.

Because he lost something.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“I was losing myself long before I left.””

The room went quiet.

He sat down.

“I loved you.””

I believed him.

That was the hardest part.

“I know.””

His eyes lifted.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Emma.

“I think you loved me the only way you knew how.””

He looked hopeful.

Then I continued.

“But that doesn’t mean it was enough.””

His face fell.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And immediately stood.

I noticed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Derek.””

He hesitated.

Then the phone rang again.

I saw the name.

Emily’s lawyer.

My heart stopped.

Why would Emily’s lawyer call him now?

Derek answered.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

The color drained from it.

“What?””

A pause.

“No, that’s impossible.””

He looked at me.

And suddenly, I knew.

Something else was coming.

Something bigger.

He ended the call slowly.

“Claire…”

“What?””

His voice shook.

“The inheritance.””

I stared.

“What about it?””

He swallowed.

“It wasn’t what I thought.””

The room became cold.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at the floor.

“Emily changed everything.””

“How?””

He looked at Emma.

May you like

Then at me.

“She left it to you.””
