Chapter 5: The Woman At The Door
Vanessa Reed stood outside my hospital room wearing a gray coat and a face full of regret.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Regret.
She looked younger than I expected.
Maybe early thirties.
Her hands were shaking.
Derek stood behind me, completely silent.
For once, he had nothing to say.
The nurse looked between us.
“Should I let her in?””
I looked at Derek.
He looked away.
That answered everything.
“Let her in.””
Rachel immediately stepped beside me.
“You sure?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
The door opened.
Vanessa walked inside slowly.
Her eyes landed on Emma.
Then on me.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came out so quietly I almost didn’t hear them.
I stared at her.
“For what?””
She swallowed.
“For everything.””
Derek stepped forward.
“Vanessa, this isn’t the time.””
She looked at him.
And something changed.
The fear on his face disappeared.
Replaced by something else.
Recognition.
Like he suddenly realized Vanessa wasn’t there to protect him.
She was there to tell the truth.
“Actually,” Vanessa said, “I think this is exactly the time.””
Derek lowered his voice.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Ruin everything.””
She laughed sadly.
“Derek, you ruined everything.””
Rachel looked at me.
I didn’t move.
I didn’t speak.
I just watched.
Because sometimes the truth doesn’t need you to chase it.
Sometimes it walks through the door.
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“I should have come sooner.””
Derek shook his head.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to silence me anymore.””
That sentence caught my attention.
Anymore.
I looked at Derek.
He avoided my eyes.
“Why are you here?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I wanted you to know the truth.””
I glanced at Derek.
“I already know he cheated.””
Her face changed.
“No.””
The room went still.
“No?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Claire, that’s not the whole truth.””
Derek stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Rachel immediately moved between them.
“Take one more step and you’ll regret it.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He told you about the hotel?””
My stomach tightened.
“Yes.””
She closed her eyes.
“That wasn’t what happened.””
I felt confused.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Derek.
Then back at me.
“He wasn’t having an affair with me.””
Derek exhaled.
For a moment, I thought maybe I had been wrong.
Maybe there was another explanation.
Then Vanessa continued.
“He was having an affair with my sister.””
The air disappeared.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Derek’s face turned white.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You heard me.””
I stared.
“Your sister?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Emily.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant everything to Derek.
I saw it.
The panic.
The realization.
“You never told her?”” Vanessa asked.
Derek said nothing.
“Tell her.””
“Vanessa, stop.””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You destroyed my family too.””
I looked at Derek.
“How many people were involved?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“My sister was sick.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She had cancer.””
The room became quiet.
“She met Derek through work. He helped her with some paperwork. Then they started talking.””
My chest tightened.
Derek looked at the floor.
“She trusted him.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“She thought he cared.””
I looked at Derek.
“And did you?””
He finally spoke.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Answer her.””
He closed his eyes.
“I cared about her.””
The words hurt differently.
Because there was no point denying it anymore.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“She passed away six months ago.””
My heart stopped.
Derek looked at her.
“I didn’t know you would come here.””
“Of course you didn’t.””
Vanessa stood.
“Because you only think about yourself.””
I looked at Derek.
Six months.
That meant while I was pregnant.
While I was preparing a nursery.
While I was choosing baby names.
He was living another life.
But something still didn’t make sense.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you come now?””
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this after Emily died.””
Derek’s expression changed.
“What is that?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Something your wife deserves to see.””
She handed it to me.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
But one sentence was enough.
*Claire, I’m sorry. Your husband never told you the truth about why he chose me.*
I looked up.
Derek was no longer pale.
He looked terrified.
Because whatever Emily had written…
Whatever truth she knew…
Was something Derek had spent months hiding.
Vanessa whispered:
“She wanted you to know what happened the night before she died.””
I unfolded the rest of the paper.
May you like
And the first line made my blood run cold.
*Derek didn’t find me by accident. I was his plan.*
