Chapter 7: The Choice He Never Expected
The hospital room was silent after Derek’s confession.
Not because nobody had anything to say.
Because there was too much.
The kind of silence that comes after a storm.
The kind where you look around and realize everything you thought was real has been destroyed.
Derek stood near the window.
The same man who once stood beside me at our wedding.
The same man who held my hand and promised me forever.
Now he looked like a stranger waiting for a verdict.
But I wasn’t his judge.
I wasn’t his wife anymore.
Not in my heart.
“Claire,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“What?””
His eyes were red.
“I made mistakes.””
I stared at him.
“Mistakes?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked down at the papers on the bed.
The email.
The documents.
The proof.
“No, Derek.””
My voice was calm.
“This wasn’t a mistake.””
He looked hurt.
“It was.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. A mistake is saying something cruel in anger. A mistake is making one bad decision.””
I pointed at the papers.
“This was a plan.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he knew I was right.
Rachel stood near the door, arms crossed.
“I can’t believe you.””
Derek looked at her.
“Rachel, this doesn’t involve you.””
Her expression changed instantly.
That was the old Derek.
The one who believed he could separate people into categories.
The people who mattered.
And the people he could dismiss.
Rachel laughed.
“Not involve me?””
She stepped closer.
“I watched my sister cry herself to sleep because you made her feel like she was crazy.””
“Rachel—”
“I watched her defend you when everyone else saw the truth.””
Her voice shook.
“She almost apologized to you for being hurt by your betrayal.””
Derek looked away.
And for once, he deserved to feel uncomfortable.
Vanessa quietly gathered her things.
“I should go.””
I looked at her.
“Thank you.””
She nodded.
“I know you probably hate me.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t.””
She looked surprised.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Maybe.””
I paused.
“But you came.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I owed Emily that.””
Then she left.
And suddenly, it was just me and Derek.
The man I had loved.
The man I had built a life with.
The man who had almost destroyed me.
He walked toward the bed.
“Can I hold her?””
I looked at Emma.
Then at him.
The question should have been simple.
A father asking to hold his daughter.
But nothing with Derek was simple anymore.
“You can.””
His face softened.
Then I added:
“Under one condition.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“You don’t get to pretend this is about being a father.””
His expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you don’t get to use Emma as a reason to avoid what you did.””
“I love my daughter.””
“I hope you do.””
My voice was quiet.
“But love isn’t just a feeling, Derek.””
He looked at me.
“It’s a choice.””
The words stayed between us.
Because he had spent months making choices.
Just not the right ones.
He picked up Emma carefully.
For a moment, I hated how natural it looked.
How easily he held her.
How easily he smiled.
Because a small part of me had wanted him to be a monster.
It would have been easier.
But he wasn’t.
He was worse.
He was human.
A person who could love his daughter and still hurt her mother.
A person who could hold a baby with one hand and destroy a family with the other.
“She’s beautiful,” he whispered.
I watched him.
“Yes.””
“She has your eyes.””
I almost corrected him.
Because I didn’t know if he deserved to talk about pieces of me.
But I stayed quiet.
After a minute, he looked at me.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I felt something cold move through me.
“Stop saying that.””
“Why?””
“Because you keep talking about what you wanted.””
I looked at him.
“You never talk about what you did.””
He lowered his eyes.
And for the first time, I saw something close to shame.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Being trapped.””
The honesty surprised me.
I waited.
He continued.
“I got married young. I thought I knew what I wanted. Then Emily came back into my life.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“Came back?””
He froze.
Too late.
Another truth.
Another crack.
“She knew you before?””
Derek looked away.
“Derek.””
He sighed.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She was someone I knew from college.””
I laughed softly.
“Of course.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means every time I think I know the worst thing, there’s another layer.””
He stepped closer.
“I didn’t marry you for money.””
I looked at him.
“I never said you did.””
“But you think it.””
“I think you married me because I was safe.””
He didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than a confession.
Because it was the truth.
I was safe.
I was loyal.
I was predictable.
I was the woman who would forgive.
Until I wasn’t.
A nurse entered the room.
“Claire?””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“There are two people here asking to speak with you.””
“Who?””
She checked the names.
“Your attorney and someone from the hospital administration.””
Derek looked confused.
“Attorney?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“You hired a lawyer?””
I nodded.
“Before I left the house.””
His eyes widened.
“When?””
“The same morning I left the ring.””
He stared at me.
“But why?””
I looked at my daughter.
“Because I finally stopped waiting for you to choose me.””
I turned toward the door.
“I chose myself.””
Derek watched me walk away.
And I knew something had changed.
May you like
Because for the first time…
He wasn’t the person deciding what happened next.
