Chapter 6: The Plan Behind The Betrayal
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
My brain refused to accept it.
Derek didn’t find me by accident.
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
He didn’t move.
“Claire.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
And that scared him more than anger would have.
“Explain why a dying woman wrote that my husband planned to find her.””
Derek looked at Vanessa.
“You shouldn’t have brought that here.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“She deserved the truth.””
“What truth?””
I asked.
Nobody answered.
So I stood up.
Slowly.
“I am done asking questions that you refuse to answer.””
Derek looked at me.
“Claire, sit down.””
“No.””
“You just gave birth.””
“I know.””
My hand touched Emma’s blanket.
“And I also know I spent years protecting someone who never protected me.””
Derek looked broken.
But I didn’t trust broken anymore.
Broken things could still hurt you.
Vanessa took a breath.
“Derek knew Emily before he met you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He didn’t tell you?””
I looked at Derek.
He looked away.
That was enough.
My wedding ring suddenly felt heavier even though it was no longer on my hand.
“How long?””
Derek whispered.
“Claire.””
“How long did you know her?””
He didn’t answer.
Vanessa answered for him.
“Three years.””
Three years.
The number echoed in my head.
I met Derek five years ago.
Which meant…
He knew her before me.
Before our wedding.
Before he promised forever.
I felt sick.
“You told me I was the love of your life.””
“I believed that.””
“You believed that?””
“Yes.””
I laughed quietly.
“While you already had another woman?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
Derek had no answer.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Emily was wealthy.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“She owned part of her family’s company.””
The room went silent.
Derek immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“When she got sick, she changed her will.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa looked at Derek.
“I’m saying he knew.””
Derek stepped forward.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“You wanted her to believe she was crazy. You wanted her to believe she was paranoid. But she deserves to know.””
I looked at Derek.
“Knew what?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“That Emily planned to leave him everything.””
I stared.
Everything.
The word felt impossible.
Derek shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Then why were you meeting with her lawyer?””
Silence.
Real silence.
The kind that changes everything.
I turned toward Derek.
“You met her lawyer?””
He swallowed.
“It wasn’t what you think.””
I almost smiled.
Because those were the exact words every guilty person used.
“Then tell me what it was.””
He looked desperate.
“Emily wanted someone she trusted.””
“You.””
“Yes.””
“And you were her friend?””
“Yes.””
“Only her friend?””
His silence answered.
I looked at my daughter.
Then back at him.
“You built our entire marriage on a lie.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I pointed at him.
“You didn’t love me.””
His face changed.
“I did.””
“You loved what I gave you.””
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
I stepped closer.
“You had a wife who believed you. A home. A family. And when another opportunity appeared, you started calculating.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
Derek opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no version of the story where he was innocent.
Vanessa reached into her bag again.
This time, she pulled out a folder.
“I brought this too.””
Derek’s eyes widened.
“Vanessa.””
She handed it to me.
“What is it?””
“Emily’s medical records.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because the day before she died, she discovered something.””
I opened the folder.
Inside was a printed email.
From Derek.
To Emily.
My hands went cold.
I read the first line.
*Once Claire gives birth, I’ll finally be free.*
I stopped breathing.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Derek looked at me.
“Claire, listen—”
I looked up.
My husband’s face was full of panic.
Not because he hurt me.
Because I had finally seen him clearly.
The email continued.
*The baby will make everything complicated, but I need the inheritance first.*
I dropped the paper.
The room went completely silent.
And then Derek whispered the words that confirmed everything.
“Claire, I can explain.””
But I didn’t want an explanation anymore.
Because I finally understood.
He didn’t leave me that morning because he was selfish.
He left because he thought I was already defeated.
He thought I would never discover the plan.
He thought I would keep begging.
I looked at him.
“No, Derek.””
My voice was steady.
“You can’t explain a choice you made on purpose.””
And for the first time in five years…
Derek realized he had lost control.
But he still didn’t know the worst part.
May you like
Because I had already taken the one thing he wanted most.
And I had done it before I ever left that kitchen.
