Chapter 8: The Woman in the Safe House
The safe house stood at the edge of the coast, hidden behind a line of wind-bent cypress trees.
Vivienne knew the road.
She had dreamed about it before.
Not remembered it.
Dreamed it.
A white house.
A blue door.
Salt in the air.
Her mother standing on the porch.
As the SUV stopped, Vivienne's hands began shaking.
Adrian noticed.
“You don't have to do this alone.””
“Yes, I do.””
He looked at her.
“She is my mother.””
Vivienne opened the door.
Daniel remained behind in the second vehicle.
He had kept his promise.
He hadn't followed.
Inside the house, the air smelled like lavender and old books.
A woman sat beside the window.
Her hair was silver now.
Her face was thinner.
But when she turned—
Vivienne stopped breathing.
“Mom?””
The woman stood.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“Vivienne.””
Vivienne crossed the room.
Then stopped halfway.
Twelve years of grief collided with twelve years of anger.
“You're alive.””
Elena nodded through tears.
“Yes.””
“You're alive.””
“Yes.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I had no choice.””
Vivienne shook her head.
“There is always a choice.””
Elena flinched.
“I know.””
Vivienne turned away.
“You missed everything.””
“I know.””
“My graduation.””
“I know.””
“My first job.””
“I know.””
“My wedding.””
Elena began crying.
“I watched.””
Vivienne spun around.
“What?””
“I watched from a distance.””
“You watched me marry Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn't come?””
“I couldn't.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard was still alive.””
Vivienne froze.
Elena wiped her eyes.
“He had people everywhere.””
Adrian entered.
“Tell her everything.””
Elena looked at him.
“You're sure?””
“Yes.””
Vivienne stepped closer.
“I deserve the truth.””
Elena nodded.
“You do.””
She sat down.
“Your mother and I discovered the original Sterling-Vale agreement when you were thirteen.””
Vivienne frowned.
“I thought Mom discovered it when I was fourteen.””
“She discovered it before that.””
Elena looked at Adrian.
“Richard found out.””
“He threatened her.””
“He threatened all of us.””
Vivienne's voice was quiet.
“What did he want?””
“Control.””
Elena folded her hands.
“He wanted the Sterling empire to remain entirely Sterling.””
“And the trust prevented that.””
“Yes.””
“Because of me.””
Elena nodded.
“Because of you.””
Vivienne sat across from her.
“What happened the night you disappeared?””
Elena's eyes filled.
“I was driving home when another car forced me off the road.””
Vivienne's breath caught.
“They wanted you dead.””
“Yes.””
“But you survived.””
“Barely.””
“Then why disappear?””
“Because I learned Richard had people watching the hospital.””
Elena looked at her daughter.
“I knew if I went home, he would come for you.””
“So you left me with Dad.””
“Yes.””
“And let me believe you died.””
“I thought grief was safer than a funeral.””
Vivienne looked away.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It did to me then.””
Elena reached for her hand.
Vivienne hesitated.
Then allowed it.
Her mother's fingers were cold.
“I loved you every day,” Elena whispered.
Vivienne's eyes filled.
“You don't get to say that.””
“I know.””
“You don't get to miss my life and then tell me you loved me.””
“I know.””
“Do you know how many times I blamed myself?””
Elena broke down.
Vivienne stared at her.
“I thought maybe I wasn't worth coming back for.””
Elena pulled her into her arms.
“You were the only reason I stayed alive.””
Vivienne finally cried.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
She buried her face against her mother's shoulder and sobbed like a child.
Adrian turned away.
Outside, thunder rolled over the ocean.
After several minutes, Vivienne pulled back.
“There is something else.””
Elena nodded.
“The photograph.””
Elena's expression changed.
“Who showed you?””
“Daniel.””
Elena looked toward Adrian.
“Then he knows.””
“He knows enough.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“The man beside me wasn't Richard.””
Vivienne froze.
Daniel had been wrong.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Who was he?””
Elena looked at her daughter.
“Richard's twin brother.””
Silence.
Vivienne stared.
“Richard had a twin?””
“Yes.””
“Why have I never heard of him?””
“Because Richard erased him.””
Adrian's face hardened.
“His name was Gabriel.””
Vivienne whispered the name.
“Gabriel Sterling.””
Elena nodded.
“He was the rightful beneficiary of the original Sterling trust.””
Daniel's voice suddenly came through the doorway.
Vivienne turned.
He was standing there.
She stared.
“I told you not to follow.””
“I didn't.””
He held up his phone.
“Adrian called me.””
Adrian frowned.
“I did?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the phone.
“The call came from your number.””
Adrian took the phone.
His expression changed.
“It's spoofed.””
Elena stood.
“Then we're already compromised.””
The lights went out.
Everyone froze.
A second later, the house alarm screamed.
Adrian grabbed Vivienne.
“Down!””
The windows shattered.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Security officers rushed in.
Vivienne screamed as Adrian pulled her behind the sofa.
Daniel dove beside them.
“Is everyone okay?””
“I’m fine,” Vivienne said.
Elena wasn't.
She had collapsed near the window.
Adrian crawled toward her.
“Mom!””
Vivienne stared.
“Mom?””
Elena's hand pressed against her side.
Blood spread across her blouse.
Vivienne screamed.
“No!””
Daniel grabbed a medical kit.
“Call an ambulance!””
Adrian shouted toward security.
“Lock down the property!””
Outside, tires screamed.
A vehicle tore away from the house.
One security officer ran to the window.
“Vehicle heading north!””
Adrian stayed beside Elena.
Vivienne knelt beside her mother.
“Stay with me.””
Elena's eyes opened.
She gripped Vivienne's wrist.
“Listen.””
“Mom, don't talk.””
“You need to know…”
“What?””
Elena's breathing became shallow.
“The man you married…”
Vivienne looked at Daniel.
Elena whispered:
“He isn't who you think he is.””
Daniel went still.
Vivienne stared at her mother.
“What are you saying?””
Elena tried to speak again.
Then her eyes closed.
The ambulance sirens grew louder in the distance.
Vivienne looked at Daniel.
May you like
He looked horrified.
And for the first time, neither of them knew whether they were standing on the same side.
