The Matriarch Ring / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Envelope

The Sterling mansion was silent when Daniel returned home after midnight.

The reception had ended hours ago.

Guests had been escorted out.

The police had taken statements.

Chloe had been questioned.

And the Matriarch Ring was now sitting inside an evidence bag.

But Eleanor had remained strangely calm.

She stood in the library with one hand resting on the fireplace mantel.

Daniel entered.

“You wanted to see me?””

Eleanor didn't turn.

“Close the door.””

He did.

She waited until the latch clicked.

Then she said:

“You have one chance to save this family.””

Daniel stared at her.

“From what?””

“From your wife.””

He shook his head.

“Vivienne isn't the enemy.””

Eleanor turned.

“You still don't understand.””

“I understand plenty.””

“No.””

She crossed the room and placed a thick folder on the desk.

“You understand that your wife is angry.””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“I understand that she was humiliated.””

“She was acting.””

His jaw tightened.

“Mom.””

“She wanted your sympathy.””

“She was pregnant.””

“She knew exactly what she was doing.””

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time in his life, something in his mother's face frightened him.

“What are you talking about?””

Eleanor pushed the folder toward him.

“Open it.””

Daniel did.

The first page contained a photograph.

A young woman stood beside Adrian Vale.

His daughter.

Vivienne.

But the photograph was dated twelve years earlier.

Daniel frowned.

“What is this?””

He turned the page.

His expression changed.

Corporate records.

Ownership structures.

Trust documents.

Private companies.

Names he didn't recognize.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

*Vale Sterling Holdings.*

Daniel froze.

“That's impossible.””

Eleanor said nothing.

He turned another page.

His fingers began trembling.

“This company owns twenty-three percent of Sterling Industries.””

“Yes.””

“My family has spent years trying to acquire that stake.””

“I know.””

Daniel looked up.

“You knew?””

Eleanor nodded.

“How?””

“Because Adrian Vale never sold it.””

Daniel's eyes moved back to the documents.

There was something else.

A letter.

Signed by Adrian Vale.

Daniel read the first line.

His face drained of color.

“What does this mean?””

Eleanor walked closer.

“It means your marriage was never what you thought it was.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You said she married me for money.””

“I said she was ambitious.””

“You said her family was broke.””

“I said they appeared ordinary.””

“You knew who she was.””

Eleanor's silence answered him.

Daniel shoved the papers aside.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“For three years?””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“Then why did you let me marry her?””

Eleanor looked almost surprised by the question.

“Because I believed we could control her.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“Control her?””

“She was young. Emotional. Desperate to keep her father out of her life.””

He stared.

“Why?””

“Because Adrian Vale has enemies.””

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

“What enemies?””

Eleanor didn't answer.

Instead, she picked up the silver envelope.

“This came from the Vale Group tonight.””

Daniel stared at it.

“What's inside?””

“You're going to find out.””

He took the envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Not Daniel Sterling.

Just:

*Daniel.*

He opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

His eyes moved across the first paragraph.

Then stopped.

He read it again.

His breathing became shallow.

Eleanor watched him carefully.

“What does it say?””

Daniel looked up.

“You tell me.””

Eleanor stepped closer.

He held the paper toward her.

“Why does this say Vivienne is the majority beneficiary?””

Eleanor's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

“You didn't know?””

“No.””

“You're lying.””

Eleanor reached for the document.

Daniel pulled it away.

The library doors suddenly opened.

Chloe stood there.

Her mascara was streaked.

Her wedding gown was wrinkled.

And she looked terrified.

“Mom.””

Eleanor turned.

“What?””

“Someone is downstairs.””

“Who?””

Chloe swallowed.

“The police.””

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

“They already left.””

“I know.””

“Then who?””

Chloe looked at Daniel.

Her face became pale.

“Vivienne.””

Daniel's heart stopped.

“What about her?””

Chloe shook her head.

“She didn't leave.””

Daniel frowned.

“My father took her home.””

“No.””

Chloe's voice dropped to a whisper.

“She went somewhere else.””

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Where?””

Chloe looked toward the window.

“There are cars outside.””

Daniel moved toward it.

Black SUVs lined the driveway.

More than a dozen.

Men in dark suits stood beneath the mansion lights.

Then a woman stepped out of the center vehicle.

She wore a long black coat.

Her hair was tied back.

She carried a thin leather folder.

Daniel recognized her immediately.

Vivienne.

But this wasn't the woman who had stood trembling in the ballroom.

This woman walked like she owned the ground beneath her feet.

She looked up at the mansion.

Then at the security cameras.

And smiled.

Daniel turned to his mother.

“What did you do?””

Eleanor didn't answer.

Vivienne's phone appeared in her hand.

A second later, Daniel's phone vibrated.

He looked down.

One message.

From his wife.

*I'm giving you ten minutes to tell me the truth.*

A second message appeared.

*After that, I tell everyone what happened twelve years ago.*

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Then a third message arrived.

*And Mom already knows what I'm talking about.*

Downstairs, the front doors opened.

Vivienne walked inside.

And behind her came Adrian Vale carrying the original Sterling family trust.

The trust Eleanor had spent twenty years believing was buried forever.
