Chapter 7: The Man in the Photograph

Daniel stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

His mother was there.

Vivienne's mother, Elena Vale, stood beneath a row of white garden lights, smiling at someone outside the frame.

And beside her stood a man Daniel had never seen before.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

One hand resting casually against the back of Elena's chair.

There was something about his face that felt familiar.

Not familiar like a stranger he'd seen at a party.

Familiar like a face buried somewhere in an old family memory.

Daniel turned the photograph over.

*Ask Vivienne who the man beside her mother is.*

His pulse accelerated.

An FBI agent passed behind him.

“Mr. Sterling?””

Daniel looked up.

“Yes?””

“You need to come with us.””

Daniel held up the photograph.

“Where did this come from?””

The agent's expression tightened.

“Where did you get it?””

“It was left here.””

“By whom?””

“I don't know.””

The agent held out his hand.

Daniel hesitated.

Then gave him the photograph.

The agent examined it.

“Interesting.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you should probably ask your wife.””

“She won't talk to me.””

The agent looked at him.

“Then you'd better find a way to make her.””

Daniel left the mansion twenty minutes later.

Not with the Sterling family.

Not with Eleanor.

Not with Chloe.

Alone.

Rain covered the windshield as he drove toward the Vale estate.

He knew Vivienne might refuse to see him.

He knew he had no right to ask anything from her.

But the photograph had changed something.

For the first time that night, the mystery wasn't about money.

It wasn't about the trust.

It wasn't even about the Sterling family.

It was about Vivienne's mother.

And Daniel remembered something from years ago.

A sentence Vivienne had once said during their first Christmas together.

“My mother never smiled in photographs.””

He had laughed at the time.

She hadn't.

She'd simply said:

“She was afraid of cameras.””

Now Daniel understood why.

He pulled into the Vale estate.

Security guards approached his car.

One of them recognized him.

“Mr. Sterling.””

“I need to see Vivienne.””

“She doesn't want visitors.””

“I know.””

The guard glanced at the photograph.

Then his expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“You know him?””

The guard stepped closer.

“Who gave you this?””

“Answer my question.””

The guard looked toward the mansion.

Then back at Daniel.

“That man is dead.””

Daniel stared.

“Who is he?””

The guard lowered his voice.

“Your father.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What?””

The guard shook his head.

“Not your father.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“Your grandfather.””

Daniel looked again.

The resemblance was undeniable now.

The jaw.

The eyes.

The thin scar beside the eyebrow.

Richard Sterling.

His grandfather.

Standing beside Elena Vale.

Daniel's hands began to shake.

“My grandfather died fifteen years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And this photograph was taken twelve years ago.””

The guard said nothing.

Daniel stared at him.

“That means…”

“Exactly.””

The guard stepped back.

“You should leave.””

Daniel didn't.

“Does Vivienne know?””

“She knows more than you think.””

The mansion doors opened.

Vivienne stood beneath the entrance light.

She wore a dark blue sweater and loose trousers.

Her face was tired.

One hand rested beneath her belly.

She looked at Daniel.

Then at the photograph.

Her expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel walked toward her.

“An agent left it at the mansion.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

Vivienne's eyes stayed fixed on the photograph.

“Come inside.””

It was the first invitation she'd given him all night.

Daniel followed.

They entered a quiet sitting room.

Vivienne closed the door.

“Show me.””

He handed her the photograph.

She stared at it.

Then sat down.

“I've never seen this.””

Daniel's heart sank.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“Do you recognize the man?””

Vivienne looked up.

“I thought I did.””

“Who?””

“My grandfather.””

Daniel frowned.

“Your grandfather?””

“My mother's father.””

Daniel blinked.

“Then why does he look exactly like my grandfather?””

Vivienne's face went pale.

“I don't know.””

Daniel sat across from her.

“There has to be an explanation.””

“There always is.””

She looked down at the photograph again.

“My father told me my mother's parents died before I was born.””

“Did he?””

“Yes.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Vivienne, this man is Richard Sterling.””

She froze.

“No.””

“I saw him in old family photographs.””

“You're wrong.””

“I wish I were.””

She stood.

“Dad!””

Adrian entered moments later.

He stopped when he saw the photograph.

His face changed.

Daniel noticed.

“You know this picture.””

Adrian stared at it.

“Yes.””

Vivienne's voice trembled.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Adrian closed the door.

“Because I promised your mother.””

“Promised her what?””

“To protect you from the truth.””

Vivienne laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Adrian sat down.

“Your mother didn't die twelve years ago.””

Vivienne's face drained of color.

“What?””

“She disappeared.””

“You told me she died.””

“I told you what I needed you to believe.””

“Dad.””

Her voice cracked.

“You let me mourn a woman who was alive?””

Adrian looked at her.

“She wasn't safe.””

“Where is she?””

Silence.

“Where is my mother?””

Adrian looked toward the window.

“She was taken.””

“By whom?””

“Richard Sterling.””

Daniel stood.

“But Richard died fifteen years ago.””

Adrian nodded.

“His death was staged.””

Vivienne's hand went to her mouth.

Daniel whispered:

“Why?””

Adrian looked at both of them.

“Because Richard discovered Elena had a child.””

Vivienne stared.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why would that matter?””

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“Because you weren't supposed to be born.””

Daniel's stomach twisted.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian walked to the desk.

He removed an old envelope from a locked drawer.

“This was sent to me the night Elena disappeared.””

He handed it to Vivienne.

She opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Her mother's handwriting.

Vivienne read it silently.

Then her lips began trembling.

“What does it say?”” Daniel asked.

She couldn't answer.

Adrian did.

“Elena wrote that Richard knew about the Vale-Sterling trust.””

Daniel stared.

“He knew about the heir.””

“Yes.””

“And he wanted to prevent Vivienne from ever inheriting.””

Adrian nodded.

“More than that.””

He looked at his daughter.

“Richard believed your existence could destroy his entire legacy.””

Vivienne wiped her eyes.

“What happened to my mother?””

Adrian's voice became quiet.

“She escaped.””

“Where?””

“She went into hiding.””

“For twelve years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't she come back?””

“Because she was protecting you.””

Vivienne looked at Daniel.

For the first time that night, he saw something other than anger in her eyes.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Dad,” she whispered.

“What?””

“If Mom is alive…”

Adrian's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Where?””

He listened.

Then looked directly at Vivienne.

“She's been found.””

Vivienne stood so quickly her chair scraped across the floor.

“Where?””

Adrian ended the call.

“She isn't hiding anymore.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Someone located her three days ago.””

“Who?””

Adrian's answer was almost inaudible.

“Your grandfather.””

Daniel felt cold.

“That isn't possible.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Richard Sterling may have been dead.””

He looked toward the rain-covered windows.

“But someone has been using his name.””

A security officer appeared at the doorway.

“Mr. Vale.””

Adrian turned.

“The vehicle is ready.””

Vivienne grabbed her coat.

“Take me to her.””

Adrian nodded.

Daniel followed.

Vivienne stopped him.

“You're not coming.””

“I know.””

She stared at him.

Then something softened.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“If my mother is alive…”

He waited.

Vivienne looked down at their unborn daughter.

“…I need you to promise me something.””

“Anything.””

“If something happens to me, protect her.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I swear.””

Vivienne nodded.

Then she walked outside.

Neither of them noticed the black sedan parked across the road.

Inside, a man watched the Vale family leave.

He lifted a phone.

“They found Elena.””

A pause.

Then he smiled.

“Good.””

May you like

He looked down at the old photograph in his hand.

“And now they'll lead us straight to her.””
