The Matriarch Ring / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Trust

The front doors of the Sterling mansion opened before anyone could reach them.

Vivienne walked through first.

She wasn't wearing the torn reception dress anymore.

Someone had given her a black coat, buttoned carefully over her stomach. Her hair was still pinned from the wedding, but several strands had fallen loose around her face.

She looked exhausted.

She also looked nothing like the woman who had stood silently beside the champagne fountain three hours earlier.

Adrian Vale followed her.

In his hands was a thick leather folder.

Behind them came four attorneys and two security officers.

Daniel stood at the bottom of the staircase.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Vivienne looked at him.

“Ten minutes are almost over.””

Daniel swallowed.

“You came here to threaten my family?””

“No.””

She glanced at Eleanor.

“I came here because your family spent three years threatening me.””

Eleanor descended one step.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

Vivienne smiled faintly.

“No, Eleanor.””

She placed one hand over her belly.

“The mistake was believing I would stay quiet forever.””

Adrian handed the folder to one of his attorneys.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes?””

“Your mother knows what's inside.””

Eleanor's face hardened.

“Adrian, don't.””

He looked at her.

“You had twelve years.””

The words made Daniel turn sharply.

“Twelve years for what?””

No one answered.

Vivienne walked toward the library.

“Let's sit down.””

Daniel followed.

Eleanor remained standing.

“I'm not participating in this circus.””

Vivienne stopped.

“Then leave.””

Eleanor blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Vivienne turned.

“You've spent years telling me this family belongs to you. Tonight, we're going to find out who it actually belongs to.””

Eleanor's jaw tightened.

“I am the matriarch of this family.””

“Not according to the trust.””

The room went silent.

Chloe entered behind them.

She had changed out of her wedding gown, but she was still wearing the same diamond earrings.

“Mom,” she whispered.

Eleanor ignored her.

Adrian placed the leather folder on the library table.

He opened it.

The first document was old.

The paper had yellowed at the edges.

A red wax seal remained unbroken.

Daniel stared at it.

“What is that?””

“My father's original trust,” Eleanor said.

Her voice was barely audible.

Daniel looked at her.

“Your father's?””

Eleanor nodded.

“My grandfather,” Adrian corrected.

Daniel looked between them.

“I don't understand.””

Vivienne pulled out a chair.

“Sit down, Daniel.””

He did.

She remained standing.

“Your great-grandfather and my grandfather were business partners.””

Daniel frowned.

“Sterling and Vale?””

“Yes.””

“That's impossible. The Sterling company was founded by my great-grandfather alone.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“That is the version your family published.””

He placed another document on the table.

“Here's the version they hid.””

Daniel picked it up.

The first page contained signatures.

Two names.

*Richard Sterling.*

*Thomas Vale.*

Below them was a percentage allocation.

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Forty-nine percent.””

“Correct,” Adrian said.

“My grandfather owned forty-nine percent of Sterling Industries?””

“Your grandfather's family owned fifty-one,” Vivienne said.

“The Vale family owned forty-nine.””

Daniel stared at the pages.

“Then what happened?””

Eleanor finally spoke.

“Thomas Vale died.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“And your grandfather claimed his shares had been transferred.””

“They were.””

“No.””

Adrian placed another document in front of him.

“They were stolen.””

The word echoed through the library.

Chloe shook her head.

“You can't prove that.””

Adrian looked at her.

“I don't need to.””

He pointed toward the signature.

“Because this isn't a transfer document.””

Daniel leaned closer.

His face went pale.

It was a loan agreement.

His great-grandfather had borrowed money from Thomas Vale.

The collateral?

Forty-nine percent of Sterling Industries.

If the loan wasn't repaid, the shares would belong to the Vale family.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“And he never repaid it?””

“No.””

“Then why does Sterling own everything?””

Eleanor's silence was answer enough.

Daniel pushed away from the table.

“You knew.””

Eleanor folded her arms.

“I knew what your grandfather did.””

“And you never told anyone?””

“It was family business.””

“No.””

Daniel stood.

“It was theft.””

Eleanor's eyes flashed.

“Watch your mouth.””

“You taught me to protect the Sterling name.””

“I taught you to protect your family.””

“You taught me to lie for you.””

Chloe stepped between them.

“Daniel, stop.””

He looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Chloe froze.

“Know what?””

“About the trust.””

“No.””

“You knew Vivienne's family wasn't poor.””

Chloe looked away.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“How long?””

Chloe said nothing.

“How long did you know?””

“Since last year.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew?””

Chloe began crying.

“Mom told me.””

Eleanor snapped, “Chloe.””

But it was too late.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Why?””

Eleanor's composure finally cracked.

“Because if Adrian Vale came back into the picture, everything your father built would collapse.””

Adrian corrected her.

“Everything your family stole would be returned.””

Eleanor looked at Vivienne.

“You knew.””

Vivienne shook her head.

“Not until six months ago.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I wanted to know whether you loved me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The sentence hit him harder than anything else that night.

“You tested me.””

“No.””

Vivienne's voice softened.

“I gave you a chance.””

Daniel looked at her.

“A chance for what?””

“To love the woman, not the inheritance.””

He looked down.

“And I failed.””

Vivienne didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Adrian turned another page.

“There is one more provision.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

Adrian pointed toward the final paragraph.

“Thomas Vale amended the trust before his death.””

Eleanor went completely still.

Vivienne's eyes moved to her father.

“You never told me this part.””

“I didn't know until yesterday.””

Daniel's heart began pounding.

“What does it say?””

Adrian looked at him.

“It says the Vale family's forty-nine percent interest cannot be reclaimed unless the next generation produces an heir through a legitimate marriage between the two families.””

Silence.

Chloe's face drained of color.

Daniel slowly looked at Vivienne.

She was already looking at him.

His voice barely worked.

“Our daughter.””

Vivienne nodded.

“Exactly.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Eleanor grabbed the edge of the table.

“No.””

Adrian's expression remained cold.

“Your great-grandfather created a condition designed to prevent the Sterling family from ever permanently severing the partnership.””

Daniel stared at Vivienne.

“Then our marriage…”

“Was legally significant,” Vivienne said.

“But you didn't know?””

“No.””

Daniel looked toward Eleanor.

“Did you?””

Eleanor didn't answer.

That was when Vivienne noticed something.

A small movement.

Chloe had quietly picked up her phone.

Vivienne's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you calling?””

Chloe froze.

“No one.””

Vivienne held out her hand.

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

Adrian's security officer stepped forward.

Chloe backed away.

Then her phone rang.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

*Marcus.*

Daniel recognized it.

“Who's Marcus?””

Chloe looked at him.

Her silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

Vivienne's face changed.

“Chloe.””

The phone continued ringing.

“Answer it.””

Chloe pressed the screen.

A man's voice came through.

“Did you get the pregnancy documents?””

Vivienne stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at her.

“What pregnancy documents?””

The voice continued.

“And did you confirm the baby is actually—”

Chloe ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Vivienne's hand slowly tightened over her stomach.

“Actually what?””

Chloe began shaking.

Daniel turned toward his sister.

“What were you about to confirm?””

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Whether the baby is really yours.””
