Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Door

I ran upstairs.

Not walked.

Ran.

My heart was pounding so hard it hurt.

Noah and Lily were standing near the bedroom window.

The curtains were moving.

The window was open.

“Where is he?””

I grabbed Noah’s shoulders.

“Who?””

“Who screamed?””

Lily pointed toward the closet.

“Someone was there.””

My blood went cold.

I moved between my children and the closet.

“Stay behind me.””

Detective Harris rushed into the room with two officers.

“What happened?””

I pointed.

“The closet.””

The officers opened it.

Nothing.

Only clothes.

Only toys.

Only darkness.

But I knew what I heard.

My daughter knew.

Someone had been there.

Harris turned toward me.

“You said your mother called?””

I nodded.

He stared.

“Your mother?””

“She’s dead.””

His expression changed.

“Marcus…”

“I know.””

The impossible had become normal.

Dead men.

Dead women.

Hidden rooms.

Missing children.

Nothing made sense anymore.

The officer searching the closet called out.

“Detective.””

We all turned.

He held something.

A small recorder.

Hidden behind a wooden panel.

My stomach tightened.

Another secret.

Harris pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice.

My mother’s voice.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Marcus, if you’re hearing this, it means they found you.””

My knees nearly gave out.

The recording continued.

“I prayed you would never learn the truth this way.””

Everyone listened.

Even Vanessa.

Especially Vanessa.

“I know what Elias did. I know what James discovered. But I made a mistake.””

The recording paused.

Then my mother whispered:

“I trusted the wrong person.””

A click.

Another voice appeared.

A man’s voice.

My father.

“Evelyn, we don’t have much time.””

My eyes widened.

Dad.

Alive.

Talking.

The recording continued.

“James, Marcus is still a child.””

“I know.””

“Then we leave him out of this.””

A pause.

Then my father said:

“No. If Elias finds the files, he’ll come after him.””

My heart stopped.

“Why me?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

The recording continued.

“Elias isn’t searching for Noah,” my father said.

“He’s searching for Marcus.””

The room went silent.

Harris looked at me.

“Why?””

I didn’t know.

I had spent my entire life thinking I was ordinary.

A normal man.

A normal husband.

A normal father.

But apparently, my existence was the center of a war I never knew existed.

The recording ended.

Then another file played automatically.

A video.

My mother appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

“Marcus,” she said.

I couldn’t move.

“If you’re watching this, then I failed.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I’m sorry.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Your father wasn’t killed.””

Everyone froze.

“He disappeared because he found out what Elias was planning.””

My hands shook.

“What was he planning?””

My mother answered.

“Creating a system.””

The video glitched.

“A system that could control people.””

Harris frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

My mother continued.

“Elias collected information. Secrets. Weaknesses. He believed everyone had a price.””

The screen flickered.

“But James found the evidence.””

My father’s name.

Again.

Always my father.

The man at the center of everything.

“He hid the evidence where Elias would never look.””

My mother leaned closer.

“He hid it with Marcus.””

The video ended.

No explanation.

No answer.

Just more questions.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For once, I believed her.

Then Noah spoke.

Quietly.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

He was staring at the floor.

“The room.””

“What about it?””

He pointed.

“There was something else down there.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t tell you because I was scared.””

“What did you find?””

He looked at me.

“A box.””

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Where is it?””

Noah pointed downstairs.

“In the wall.””

We moved quickly.

Back to the hidden room.

Back to the place where this nightmare began.

The box was still there.

Small.

Metal.

Locked.

Harris examined it.

“No key.””

Noah looked at me.

“I think you’re supposed to open it.””

“Why?””

He looked at the lock.

Then at me.

“Because it has your name on it.””

I stared.

My name was engraved into the metal.

Marcus Hale.

My hands trembled as I touched it.

The moment my finger brushed the surface—

the lock clicked.

Inside was one piece of paper.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed my father.

Standing beside Elias.

But they weren’t enemies.

They were partners.

And beneath the photo was a handwritten message.

*Marcus, if you found this, you are old enough to know what you really are.*
