The Knock Beneath the House / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Boy Beneath the Floor

I climbed into the darkness before Vanessa could stop me.

The opening was barely wide enough for my shoulders.

The wooden edges scraped against my jacket as I lowered myself into the crawlspace beneath our house.

“Marcus!”” Vanessa shouted.

I ignored her.

Because somewhere beneath my feet was my son.

My son who had been missing.

My son who had been calling for help.

The flashlight beam shook in my hand as it moved across the dirt floor.

The space beneath our house was larger than it should have been.

That was the first thing I noticed.

A normal crawlspace would have pipes.

Insulation.

Dust.

Not this.

There were wooden beams supporting the ceiling, but between them were signs of something else.

A narrow path.

Old shelves.

A small chair pushed against the wall.

Someone had built this place.

Someone had been here.

I swallowed hard.

“Noah?””

My voice echoed.

For a moment, nothing answered.

Then—

“Dad?””

I turned toward the sound.

“Where are you?””

“Over here.””

I moved quickly.

The flashlight beam passed over old boxes, torn blankets, and strange markings carved into the wood.

Then I saw him.

“Noah!””

My son was sitting against the far wall.

His face was pale.

His clothes were dirty.

His wrists had red marks around them.

I dropped beside him.

“Oh my God.””

I grabbed him and pulled him into my arms.

He held onto me so tightly I could barely breathe.

“I knew you’d come,” he whispered.

I closed my eyes.

For three days, I had imagined every terrible possibility.

But nothing prepared me for holding my child underground.

“Are you hurt?””

Noah nodded slightly.

“Not badly.””

“Who did this?””

He looked away.

That scared me more than anything.

“Noah.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Dad, we have to leave.””

“I’m getting you out.””

“No.””

He grabbed my shirt.

“Not yet.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

He looked toward the opening above us.

Toward Vanessa.

“She can’t know I told you.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Noah didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

I already knew.

“Your mom?””

His silence was enough.

I felt like the air had been knocked out of my lungs.

“Noah, listen to me.””

I held his face gently.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

He looked terrified.

“Mom found out I knew.””

“Knew what?””

Before he could answer, a sound came from above.

A floorboard creaked.

Vanessa.

I looked up.

“Noah, stay here.””

“Dad—”

“I’m not leaving you.””

I climbed back toward the opening.

When my head emerged into the living room, Vanessa was standing above me.

Her face was wet with tears.

For the first time in fifteen years, my wife looked like a stranger.

“What did he tell you?”” she asked.

The question hit me harder than any accusation.

Not “Is he okay?””

Not “Can we get him help?””

The first thing she wanted to know was what Noah had said.

I slowly climbed out.

“Why did you build this?””

Vanessa looked down.

Her silence answered more than words could.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You knew.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect him.””

“Protect him from what?””

She looked toward the opening.

Then whispered:

“From the truth.””

My phone rang.

The sound cut through the room.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only static.

Then a man’s voice.

“Marcus Hale?””

I stepped away from Vanessa.

“Yes.””

The voice lowered.

“You need to get your son out of that house before your wife finishes what she started.””

My chest tightened.

“Who is this?””

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he said something that made my blood turn cold.

“Ask Vanessa why Noah was never supposed to find the room under the house.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Slowly, I looked at my wife.

“Who was that?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

May you like

She just whispered:

“He found you.””
