Chapter 3: The Truth My Son Found
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
I had called them without telling Vanessa.
Not because I didn’t trust my wife.
Because I didn’t know her anymore.
That was a feeling I never imagined experiencing.
The woman who slept beside me every night.
The woman who held my hand when Noah was born.
The woman who cried with me when he disappeared.
I looked at her sitting on the couch while officers searched beneath our floor.
And I wondered if I had ever really known her.
Detective Harris entered the living room.
He had been leading Noah’s missing-person case since day one.
When he saw my son walk out of the hallway wrapped in a blanket, he stopped.
“Is that…”
I nodded.
“Noah.””
For the first time in three days, Detective Harris looked shocked.
He rushed forward.
“Noah, are you hurt?””
My son looked at Vanessa.
Only for a moment.
But Detective Harris noticed.
Everyone noticed.
“Noah?”” he asked.
My son swallowed.
“Can we talk somewhere else?””
The detective looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
“Marcus, I need to ask what happened.””
I pointed toward the floor.
“He was under there.””
The detective frowned.
“Under the house?””
“Yes.””
He stared.
“That crawlspace wasn’t on the original building plans.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Detective Harris looked serious.
“The previous owners never reported a hidden room.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
The anger I felt almost scared me.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t move.
“Explain.””
She whispered my name.
“Marcus, please.””
“Explain!””
The entire room went silent.
Lily was upstairs with a police officer, but I could still hear her crying.
Vanessa finally looked at me.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She wiped her face.
“Years ago, before we bought this house, I found something.””
“What?””
“A room.””
I stared.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“But I never used it.””
“Then why was Noah there?””
Her face collapsed.
“I don’t know.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re lying.””
The words hurt coming out.
But they were true.
Vanessa looked down.
“Marcus, there are things about my past you don’t know.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently.””
She flinched.
Detective Harris stepped between us.
“Mrs. Hale, I need you to start from the beginning.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
She looked toward Noah.
Because my son was standing in the doorway.
And he was crying.
“Mom knew,” he said quietly.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s face went white.
“Noah…”
“She knew someone was coming.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Noah walked into the room.
“She told me never to go near the floor.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
“No.””
Noah’s voice broke.
“You were trying to hide it.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“Hide what?””
Noah reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small object.
A flash drive.
My eyebrows tightened.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the room.””
Vanessa stood immediately.
“Noah, give me that.””
The entire room froze.
Because her reaction was too fast.
Too desperate.
Detective Harris raised his hand.
“Mrs. Hale, don’t move.””
Noah handed the flash drive to the detective.
“I found it behind the wall.””
My mouth went dry.
“What’s on it?””
Noah looked at me.
His eyes filled with pain.
“Something about Mom.””
Detective Harris plugged it into his laptop.
A single folder appeared.
No name.
No label.
Just one file.
He opened it.
A video loaded.
The timestamp was from eight years ago.
Before Noah was born.
The screen flickered.
Then a woman appeared.
My wife.
Younger.
Terrified.
Sitting inside the same hidden room beneath our house.
But she wasn’t alone.
A man sat beside her.
A man I had never seen before.
The video played.
Vanessa looked directly into the camera.
And said:
“If anyone finds this, it means I failed.””
I felt Vanessa grab the back of a chair.
The man beside her leaned closer.
Then the camera captured his face.
My blood turned cold.
Because I recognized him.
Not from my life.
From the news.
A man who had disappeared eight years ago.
A man everyone believed was dead.
Detective Harris whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The video continued.
Vanessa looked at the camera again.
And said six words that changed everything.
“Marcus Hale is not Noah’s father.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
I looked at my wife.
She was crying.
And she whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.””
But before anyone could ask another question, the video glitched.
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
Written in white letters.
A name.
A name I had never heard before.
May you like
And beneath it, a sentence.
*He is coming back for his son.*
