Chapter 5: The Secret in the Hospital Records
Detective Harris arrived before sunrise.
He didn’t come alone.
Two officers stood behind him.
That told me everything.
This was no longer a missing child investigation.
This was something bigger.
“Marcus,” Harris said quietly.
I stepped aside.
He entered the kitchen.
Vanessa sat at the table, staring at a cup of untouched coffee.
“You need to tell me everything,” Harris said.
She nodded.
“I know.””
I leaned against the counter.
Still angry.
Still confused.
But I needed answers.
Harris placed a folder on the table.
“We checked the flash drive.””
My heart tightened.
“And?””
“There were deleted files.””
Vanessa looked up.
“Deleted?””
“Yes.””
Harris looked at me.
“Someone tried to erase evidence.””
“Can you recover it?””
“We already did.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were printed documents.
The first page was a hospital record.
I recognized the name immediately.
Noah Hale.
My hands became cold.
“What is this?””
Harris looked at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Hale, would you like to explain?””
She didn’t move.
I grabbed the paper.
The words blurred.
Then one line became clear.
*Biological father testing requested.*
My throat tightened.
“You tested Noah?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After he was born.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
The pain in her face almost made me stop.
Almost.
“Who is his father?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
I didn’t want to hear it.
But I needed to.
“Elias.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room felt like it tilted.
I sat down.
All those years.
Every birthday.
Every school event.
Every bedtime story.
I had been his father.
Even if blood said something else.
A person could be replaced on paper.
But not in a child’s heart.
“Did Noah know?””
“No.””
“Did Elias?””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“He found out.””
“How?””
“He had people watching me.””
Detective Harris frowned.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at the window.
“Because Elias believed Noah belonged to him.””
I felt rage rise in my chest.
“He is not an object.””
“I know.””
“He doesn’t get to walk back into our lives and claim him.””
Vanessa looked at me sadly.
“Marcus, you don’t understand.””
“What don’t I understand?””
“Elias doesn’t want Noah because he loves him.””
A silence followed.
“Then why?””
Her answer came quietly.
“Because Noah knows something.””
Everyone stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
Where Noah was sleeping.
“He found the files.””
Detective Harris leaned forward.
“What files?””
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“The ones Elias spent years trying to hide.””
“What files?””
She looked at me.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Elias didn’t disappear.””
I frowned.
“But everyone thought he died.””
“That was the plan.””
My skin prickled.
“The plan?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Elias wanted everyone to believe he was dead.””
“Why?””
“Because dead men can’t be investigated.””
Detective Harris stood.
“Where is the proof?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
“Mrs. Hale.””
“I don’t know!””
Her voice broke.
The first time I had ever seen her truly lose control.
Then Noah appeared in the doorway.
His face was pale.
“You’re wrong.””
We all turned.
“Noah?””
He walked slowly into the room.
“He didn’t hide the files.””
I moved toward him.
“Son, you need to rest.””
“No.””
His eyes were fixed on Vanessa.
“He wanted me to find them.””
Vanessa froze.
“What did you say?””
Noah reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small notebook.
“I found this with the flash drive.””
He handed it to Detective Harris.
The detective opened it.
Inside were pages of handwriting.
Dates.
Names.
Addresses.
And one sentence written over and over.
*The boy will reveal the truth.*
Harris looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Noah answered.
“Elias.””
My phone rang.
Again.
Unknown number.
This time, I answered.
No one spoke.
Then I heard breathing.
A familiar voice.
A voice from the video.
“Marcus.””
My blood turned cold.
“Elias?””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“I’ve waited eight years to talk to you.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
Another laugh.
“Closer than you think.””
Then he whispered:
“Ask Vanessa why she buried my name with my body.””
The call ended.

And at that exact moment—
the lights in our house went out.
