Chapter 9: The Evidence That Could Destroy Them
By the time I reached Megan's office, my hands were shaking so badly that I had to sit in the parking lot for several minutes before getting out of the car.
Ryan's message remained open on my phone.
Bring it to the house tonight, or we'll let the judge decide whether you're fit to raise the girls.
He had turned our daughters into a weapon.
Again.
Megan met me at the entrance and immediately noticed my expression.
“What's happened?””
I handed her the phone.
She read both messages, then looked at me.
“Do not respond. We'll preserve these and address them through the appropriate legal process.””
“What if he actually tries to take the girls?””
“A threat isn't a court order. We need to distinguish between what he says and what he can legally do. If he attempts to remove them unlawfully or threatens immediate harm, contact the authorities.””
I nodded.
She led me into her office and locked the door.
I placed the original agreement on her desk.
“Evelyn gave me this. She says it documents the original partnership between my father, Daniel Carter, and Richard.””
Megan put on a pair of reading glasses and began reviewing it.
For nearly twenty minutes, the only sounds were the turning of pages and the soft hum of the air conditioner.
Finally, she looked up.
“This could be important, but I want an independent attorney experienced in property and trust disputes to review it. There are several provisions that may clarify the ownership structure.””
“Can it prove Richard stole the money?””
“It may establish that the partners had defined interests and that certain transfers required approval. But we need to compare the agreement with the actual transactions.””
She pointed to a paragraph near the end.
“This clause is particularly interesting. It states that any property acquired using partnership funds must be recorded according to the partners' respective interests unless all parties agree otherwise in writing.””
“So if Richard transferred money to my mother, that doesn't automatically make the property his.””
“Correct. The source of the money matters, but so do the agreement, the purpose of the transfer, and the title records.””
I exhaled slowly.
For the first time, someone had explained the situation without threatening me or demanding that I trust them blindly.
Megan copied the agreement and placed the original in a secure envelope.
“We'll document when and how you obtained it. That will help establish its history. I'll also contact Evelyn, with your permission, to arrange a formal statement about how she preserved the document.””
“You have my permission.””
She made a note.
Then she opened a second folder.
“There's another development. The financial institution has responded to our inquiry about the frozen joint account.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did they say?””
“They confirmed that the restriction was requested by Ryan. But they also provided a record of several transfers made shortly before the account was frozen.””
She turned the page toward me.
The transactions were listed by date and amount.
I recognized the first transfer.
It was the money I had inherited from my mother.
The second was a larger payment made from the joint account to a company I had never heard of.
The third was a payment to an account associated with Carter Maritime Holdings.
My breath caught.
“He moved our money to his father's company?””
“The records show that funds were transferred. We still need to establish the legal basis and whether the transactions were authorized.””
I stared at the page.
“How much?””
Megan told me the total.
It was enough to cover years of expenses for me and the girls.
And it had disappeared into accounts I couldn't access.
“Can I get it back?””
“We can seek appropriate relief, including an accounting and potentially recovery of funds if the evidence supports your claim. But I won't promise a particular outcome before we understand the full transaction history.””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
Ryan had spent years telling me we were building a future together.
Now I was discovering that he might have been moving our money behind my back while I cared for our children.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered on speaker.
“Claire, I need to tell you something before you hear it from Richard.””
“What?””
“I went to the house this morning. I wanted to look for my father's records in the study.””
I sat upright.
“You went to Richard's house?””
“Yes. I know you told me not to go alone, but I thought he was at work.””
“Was he there?””
“He came home early.””
I exchanged a glance with Megan.
“What happened?””
“He found me looking through a cabinet. He was furious. He said I had no right to question him after everything he had done for me.””
“Did you find anything?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.””
My pulse quickened.
“What?””
“A folder containing correspondence between Richard and a woman named Margaret Shaw.””
Megan leaned closer to the phone.
“Vanessa, this is Megan Brooks, Claire's attorney. Do you still have the documents?””
“No. Richard took the folder away from me.””
“Did you photograph any pages?””
“Yes. I managed to take three pictures before he noticed.””
“Please send them to my office. Preserve the original image files, and don't edit them.””
Vanessa agreed.
Then she spoke directly to me.
“Claire, I think Richard lied about my mother.””
“Why?””
“The letters refer to payments made to Margaret for several years after Richard claimed she died.””
I felt a chill.
“Could they have been payments for something else?””
“Maybe. But one letter mentions a meeting at a medical facility. Another says Margaret had agreed to remain out of contact until the property dispute was resolved.””
Megan's expression became serious.
“We need the complete documents before drawing conclusions.””
Vanessa sighed.
“I know. But there's something else. Ryan was there.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he do?””
“He told Richard that the settlement offer wasn't enough. He wanted you to sign over the property and give up any claim to the joint funds.””
I closed my eyes.
“And Richard?””
“He said you would sign once you understood what would happen if you refused.””
“What did Ryan say?””
Vanessa went quiet.
Then she whispered, “He said he didn't care whether you signed willingly, as long as you signed.””
I felt a strange stillness settle over me.
Six years of marriage.
Six years of believing that Ryan was the man who would stand beside me when life became difficult.
I had defended him when my friends questioned his absences. I had reassured him when his career stalled. I had stood beside him through every disappointment, convinced that love meant refusing to give up when things became hard.
He had apparently been willing to take my home, my money, and my security while I was too exhausted to understand what he was doing.
“Vanessa,” I said, “why are you helping me?””
Her answer came slowly.
“Because I finally understand that Richard never cared about my father. He cared about the money. And Ryan is becoming exactly like him.””
I looked at Megan.
She gestured for me to continue.
“Do you have anything else that could verify what you heard?””
“There's a security camera in the study. I don't know whether it records audio, but Richard has kept the system for years. If the footage is still stored, it may show who entered the room and when.””
Megan spoke firmly.
“Do not attempt to access the system or enter the property without authorization. If you have documents or recordings, preserve them. We can determine the proper way to request additional evidence.””
“I understand.””
After the call ended, Megan sat back.
“We now have several separate issues: the marital financial dispute, the property trust, and the historical partnership. We need to keep them organized rather than assume one piece of evidence proves everything.””
I nodded.
“But they're connected.””
“They may be. Our job is to establish exactly how.””
That afternoon, I returned to the San Pedro house.
Emily had prepared dinner and set up a small workspace at the dining table. The girls were asleep in their bassinets, and a stack of clean laundry sat beside the sofa.
For the first time in days, the house felt almost peaceful.
Then someone knocked.
I froze.
Emily moved toward the window and looked through the curtain.
“It's Ryan.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
He stood on the porch with a leather folder tucked beneath his arm. He wasn't wearing his usual smile. His shirt was wrinkled, and his hair looked as though he had been running his hands through it all afternoon.
Emily stepped in front of the door.
“What do you want?””
“I need to speak to my wife.””
“She doesn't want to speak to you.””
“Emily, this is a private family matter.””
“No. It stopped being private when you changed the locks and left her with two babies and no money.””
Ryan's face tightened.
“Move.””
Emily didn't budge.
I walked toward the doorway.
“It's okay, Emily.””
She turned to me.
“Are you sure?””
“No. But I want to hear what he has to say.””
I opened the door but kept the chain secured.
Ryan looked past me toward the living room.
“Can I come in?””
“No.””
His jaw flexed.
“Claire, I came here to make an offer.””
“Another offer?””
“A better one.””
He held up the folder.
“I'll give you enough money to start over. You can keep the furniture from the house, and I'll cover the girls' expenses. In return, you sign the property release and withdraw the financial allegations.””
I stared at him.
“You transferred money from our joint account to your father's company.””
“Those were business transactions.””
“Without my permission.””
“You don't understand how our finances work.””
“I understand that I never authorized those transfers.””
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Claire, please. I'm trying to keep this from becoming ugly.””
I almost laughed.
“It's already ugly.””
He glanced at Emily, then back at me.
“Vanessa has been feeding you lies.””
“Did you tell her that you and I were separated?””
He looked away.
“Did you tell her I was an unfit mother?””
“That's not what I said.””
“Did you and your father discuss using the girls to pressure me?””
His expression changed.
For a moment, I saw the man who had laughed at the port, convinced that his charm could erase any consequence.
Then his eyes moved toward the living room.
“Where's the ledger?””
I stared at him.
“You came here to negotiate, but the first thing you ask is about the ledger.””
“It's a family business document.””
“It was hidden on my property.””
“Your property?”” He laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea how that land was acquired.””
“Then explain it.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because you won't understand.””
I shook my head.
“No, Ryan. You won't explain it because you know I might have a right to it.””
His face flushed.
“You think you're suddenly some kind of powerful woman because you found an old house and a stack of papers?””
I held his gaze.
“No. I think I'm a mother who finally stopped believing every lie her husband tells her.””
He stepped closer to the door.
“You have until tomorrow morning to sign the settlement. After that, my attorney will proceed with the custody petition.””
Emily reached for her phone.
“Leave.””
Ryan ignored her.
He looked directly at me.
“You're making a terrible mistake.””
I closed the door.
Through the glass, I watched him stand on the porch for several seconds before turning away.
Then he walked down the steps and disappeared into the darkness.
My hands were shaking.
Emily locked the door and pulled me into a hug.
“You did the right thing.””
I wanted to believe her.
But an hour later, Megan called.
“Claire, I've received the photographs Vanessa sent. One of them contains a reference to a payment made to a private medical facility. I'm having the documents reviewed.””
“Does it tell us where Margaret is?””
“Not conclusively. But there is a name in the correspondence that we need to investigate.””
“What name?””
“Daniel's daughter may not be the only person Richard has been hiding things from.””
I sat down.
“What do you mean?””
Megan paused.
“One letter refers to a second beneficiary under the original partnership agreement.””
My throat tightened.
“Who?””
“The name is partially obscured in the photograph, but the first name appears to be Claire.””
I stared at the wall.
“Me?””
“Possibly. We need the original document.””
I thought about my mother's letter, the hidden ledger, and the property that had been kept separate from everything else.
Then Megan said something that changed the direction of the entire case.
“Claire, I think your mother may have been protecting more than a house. She may have been protecting your ownership interest in the original partnership itself.””
I couldn't speak.
If that was true, the property was only one piece of what my mother had left me.
And Richard had spent years trying to keep me from discovering the rest.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
*I found the original letter Richard wrote to my mother. It says she was supposed to receive half of Daniel's share if anything happened to him.*
A second message arrived.
*But the payment records stop three years ago.*
May you like
Then a third.
*Claire, I think my mother is still alive. And I think Richard knows exactly where she is.*
