Chapter 6: The Mistress Who Knew My Mother

I read Vanessa's message until the words blurred.

The woman who had kissed my husband in front of me was now asking to discuss my dead mother.

I should have blocked her.

I should have thrown the phone across the room and refused to give her another second of my attention.

Instead, I typed one question.

*What do you know about my mother?*

Her response arrived almost immediately.

*More than Ryan does. Meet me at the Harbor Café at ten. Come alone.*

I showed the message to Emily.

“No,” she said firmly.

“Emily—”

“She humiliated you in public. Now she wants you to meet her alone? Absolutely not.””

“I won't go alone.””

“Good. Because if she has information, she can share it with your lawyer.””

I called Megan and explained the situation.

She listened without interrupting.

“Don't assume Vanessa is telling the truth,” she said.

“But don't ignore the possibility that she has relevant information. If you meet her, choose a public place, tell someone where you are, and don't sign or accept anything without reviewing it.””

“I understand.””

“And Claire? Don't let your anger at the affair cloud your judgment. She may be trying to manipulate you. She may also be afraid of Richard.””

I thought about Vanessa's expression at the port.

The confident smile.

The casual cruelty.

Could a woman like that be afraid of anyone?

I wasn't sure.

The next morning, Emily stayed at the house with the girls while I drove to the Harbor Café.

I arrived fifteen minutes early and chose a table near the window. The café overlooked a stretch of the waterfront, where fishing boats rocked gently against their moorings.

At ten sharp, Vanessa walked through the door.

She wore jeans, a black sweater, and oversized sunglasses. Without the polished clothes and carefully arranged hair, she looked younger than I had first realized.

She spotted me immediately.

“Claire.””

I didn't stand.

“You asked to meet.””

She slid into the chair opposite me.

“I appreciate you coming.””

“Don't confuse that with forgiveness.””

Vanessa removed her sunglasses.

For the first time, she didn't smile.

“I didn't expect you to forgive me.””

“Then why am I here?””

She looked through the window toward the harbor.

“Because Ryan doesn't know who I really am.””

I folded my arms.

“He knows your name. He knows what you look like. He knows how to kiss you in public. That seems like plenty.””

Her cheeks flushed.

“I deserve that.””

“You deserve considerably more than that.””

She lowered her eyes.

For a moment, I felt a flicker of satisfaction.

Then she opened her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed a man standing beside my mother outside a brick building. The man had dark hair, a narrow face, and a smile that reminded me of someone I couldn't immediately place.

“That's my father,” Vanessa said.

“Daniel Carter.””

I studied the photograph.

“Thomas told me about him.””

“Then you know he died when I was a child.””

“I know what Ryan told me.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“Ryan told you he died in a boating accident, didn't he?””

“Yes.””

“He didn't.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“My father died in a car crash on a road outside San Pedro. The police report said he lost control of the vehicle. Richard told everyone it was an accident.””

“Why would Ryan lie about that?””

“Because Richard raised him to believe that his family never owed anyone an explanation.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“My father and your mother were business partners. They invested in property together. When the partnership collapsed, Richard took control of the remaining assets.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed my father had stolen money from him.””

“Had he?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“My father kept records proving that Richard had diverted funds from their business. He was preparing to take the evidence to a lawyer when he died.””

My stomach tightened.

“And my mother helped him?””

“She tried. She knew about the money. She had documents showing what happened to the property.””

I thought of the photograph delivered to the house.

The envelope in my mother's hands.

The fear in her eyes.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Maybe she wanted to protect you. Maybe she was afraid Richard would come after you.””

I looked at Vanessa carefully.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

She looked away.

“Because Ryan isn't the only person Richard has been controlling.””

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe you're a victim?””

“No. I expect you to hate me. I earned that.””

“Then start explaining.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“My father left behind a daughter and a small life insurance policy. Richard became my guardian after my mother died. He paid for my education and made sure I had everything I needed.””

“Sounds generous.””

“It was. Until I started asking questions about my father.””

She pulled a folded document from her bag.

“When I was twenty-one, I found an old letter from him. It mentioned the San Pedro property and said that Richard had taken something that didn't belong to him.””

I glanced at the document.

“What was it?””

“A financial ledger. It recorded the original investment, the money Richard transferred, and the agreement between my father and your mother.””

“Where is it now?””

“I don't know. My father hid it before he died.””

“Then how does Richard know about it?””

“Because he spent years trying to find it.””

I felt the room grow smaller.

“Why did you become involved with Ryan?””

Vanessa flinched.

I held her gaze.

“You don't get to skip that question.””

She looked down at her hands.

“I met Ryan while working aboard the cruise ship. At first, I thought he was charming. He told me he was unhappy in his marriage and that you had agreed to separate.””

I stared at her.

“He told you we were separated?””

“Yes.””

“We weren't.””

“I know that now.””

“When did you find out?””

Her voice dropped.

“The day I saw you at the port.””

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

She had known Ryan was married.

She had known he had children.

And she had still kissed him in front of me.

“You watched me stand there with two babies,” I said slowly, “and you told me I should be grateful he came home.””

Tears gathered in her eyes.

“I was trying to make you leave.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard told me that if you gained control of the property, everything would collapse. He said your mother had stolen my father's share and that you were benefiting from it.””

I shook my head.

“So you helped him humiliate me because you believed his story?””

“I wanted to believe it. I wanted my father to have been wronged, and I thought Ryan could help me get answers.””

“You could have asked me.””

“I know.””

“You could have asked my lawyer.””

“I know.””

“You could have chosen not to sleep with my husband.””

She swallowed.

“I know.””

For the first time, her apology sounded less like an excuse and more like an admission.

But it didn't undo anything.

I pushed the photograph back across the table.

“Tell me what you actually want.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I want the ledger. If it exists, it proves what happened to my father's investment. I also want to know why Richard has been trying to get control of your mother's property for so long.””

“And you think I'll help you?””

“I think we may be looking for the same truth.””

I studied her face.

She looked frightened now, but fear could be another kind of performance.

“What do you have that proves any of this?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she took out her phone.

“I recorded a conversation between Richard and Ryan two weeks ago.””

My pulse quickened.

“What conversation?””

“They were discussing the property. Richard told Ryan that the only way to get control of it was to make you sign a marital settlement before you learned what your mother had done.””

I felt sick.

“What had my mother done?””

Vanessa pressed play.

The recording was muffled at first. I heard the clink of glassware and the low hum of a restaurant.

Then Richard's voice came through clearly.

“Once Claire signs, the trust becomes irrelevant. She'll have no money to fight us, and the property will be easier to acquire.””

Ryan answered.

“What if she refuses?””

Richard laughed.

“Then make her understand what happens when she goes against this family.””

My fingers curled around the edge of the table.

The recording continued.

Ryan spoke again.

“And the girls?””

Richard's answer was chilling.

“Children are the easiest leverage in a divorce. A judge will want stability. We simply need to show that Claire cannot provide it.””

The audio ended.

I sat frozen.

There it was.

Not speculation.

Not suspicion.

Their own voices discussing how to use my daughters against me.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I should have stopped them. I should have told you earlier.””

I couldn't look at her.

“Send the recording to my lawyer.””

“I will.””

“And don't contact Ryan or Richard about this conversation.””

She nodded.

I stood.

For one moment, I thought about slapping her. I imagined the sound of my hand against her cheek, the shock in her eyes, the satisfaction of making her feel even a fraction of what she had made me feel at the port.

But I didn't.

I had two daughters waiting for me.

I had a lawyer.

And now I had evidence.

“Vanessa,” I said, “I don't trust you. I don't forgive you. But if that recording is real, you need to understand that this is no longer about helping me hurt Ryan.””

She looked up.

“It's about stopping them from hurting my children.””

I left the café without waiting for her answer.

Outside, the harbor wind stung my eyes.

I called Megan and told her everything.

“Do not delete that message or alter the recording,” she instructed.

“Have Vanessa send the original file directly to my office. We'll need to preserve its authenticity and review it before deciding how to use it.””

“I will.””

“And Claire, this may be important evidence, but we need to proceed carefully. Don't confront Richard with it.””

I promised I wouldn't.

By the time I returned to the house, Emily was sitting on the living room floor, feeding Lily while Grace slept against her shoulder.

“How did it go?”” she asked.

I told her about Vanessa's father, the ledger, and the recording.

Emily's expression changed with every sentence.

When I finished, she placed Lily in her bassinet.

“Those men were planning to take your children away from you.””

“They were planning to make me look incapable of caring for them.””

“It's the same cruelty with different words.””

I sat beside her.

For several minutes, we listened to the girls breathe.

Then my phone rang.

Ryan.

I considered ignoring it.

Instead, I answered and put it on speaker.

“Claire,” he said, his voice unusually calm.

“We need to talk.””

“About what?””

“About the property.””

I looked at Emily.

“How did you find out I was there?””

“Dad told me.””

“Of course he did.””

Ryan exhaled.

“Listen, I know things have been difficult. I know you're angry about Vanessa, and I understand why.””

I almost laughed at the sudden change in tone.

“You understand why?””

“Yes. I handled things badly.””

“That's one way to describe it.””

“I'm willing to make things right.””

I sat very still.

“What does that mean?””

“We can arrange a financial settlement. You get a reasonable amount of money, the girls' expenses are covered, and we move forward separately.””

“And the property?””

“That's a separate matter.””

“No, Ryan. That's the entire matter.””

His voice sharpened.

“Claire, don't be stupid. You don't know anything about the agreement between my family and your mother.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't do that over the phone.””

“Why not?””

“Because it's complicated.””

“Is that what you call planning to use my daughters against me?””

Silence.

My blood went cold.

I hadn't told him about the recording.

“Who told you that?”” he demanded.

I said nothing.

“Was it Vanessa?””

His voice changed so suddenly that I almost didn't recognize it.

“Claire, listen to me. Whatever she told you, she's lying. She's been trying to manipulate my family for months.””

“Then you won't mind explaining what you and your father discussed in that restaurant.””

The silence stretched.

Then Ryan spoke in a low, furious voice.

“You have no idea what you've done.””

He hung up.

I lowered the phone.

Emily stared at me.

“He knows.””

“Maybe he suspects.””

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from an unknown number.

It contained a single photograph.

A black ledger lay open on a wooden desk. Beside it was a handwritten note in my mother's familiar script.

*Daniel's share must be protected. Richard cannot be allowed to destroy the evidence.*

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*If you want to know what really happened to Daniel Carter, stop trusting everyone who claims to be helping you.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Especially Vanessa.*

I looked toward the window.

Across the street, a black SUV sat parked beneath a tree.

May you like

Its engine was running.

And behind the windshield, someone was watching our house.
