Chapter 5: The Money Behind the Betrayal

Richard's final words followed me long after his SUV disappeared.

Your mother didn't buy that land with her own money.

I stood in the doorway, watching the empty street, while Emily held Grace against her shoulder.

“What do you think he meant?”” she asked.

“I don't know.””

Thomas closed the front door.

“Don't let him frighten you into making assumptions. Richard has spent years attempting to acquire this property. His statement may be an attempt to undermine your confidence in your ownership.””

“But what if he's telling the truth?””

“Then we'll examine the records. That's why I kept them.””

He carried the leather folder into the living room and placed it on the coffee table.

“Your mother was exceptionally careful. Every major transaction was documented.””

He opened a separate section of the file.

Inside were bank statements, property deeds, trust agreements, and correspondence dating back more than twenty years.

I sat down beside Emily.

The girls had finally fallen asleep, their tiny chests rising and falling beneath their blankets.

Thomas removed a yellowed document.

“This is the original purchase agreement.””

I leaned forward.

The property had been purchased in my mother's name twenty-two years earlier. The seller's signature was clear, and the payment had come from an account belonging to my mother.

“That's her account,” I said.

“Yes. But notice the transfer immediately before the purchase.””

He pointed to a bank statement.

A substantial deposit had been made several days before the transaction.

The name attached to the transfer was unfamiliar.

*Carter Maritime Holdings.*

My stomach tightened.

“That's Richard's company.””

“It's a company associated with him,” Thomas corrected.

“We need to establish why the funds were transferred.””

Emily looked up.

“Could Richard have given Mom the money?””

“Possibly,” Thomas said.

“But the accompanying correspondence suggests a different arrangement.””

He handed me a letter dated several weeks before the property purchase.

The letter was from Richard to my mother.

As discussed, the funds are being provided for the acquisition of the San Pedro parcels. I expect the agreed ownership structure to remain confidential until the development proposal is finalized.

I read the sentence again.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas studied the page.

“It could indicate that your mother purchased the property on behalf of an investor. It could also reflect an arrangement that was later changed. We cannot draw a conclusion from one letter.””

“But Mom told me it belonged to her.””

“The trust documents clearly identify you as the beneficiary. The question is whether Richard has any legitimate claim arising from the original transaction.””

I felt the hope I had carried into the house begin to weaken.

“If he paid for it, can he take it away?””

“That depends on the terms of the original arrangement and subsequent records. Payment alone does not automatically establish ownership, but we need to examine the evidence carefully.””

Emily reached for my hand.

“We'll figure it out.””

I nodded, though my stomach remained knotted.

For the next hour, Thomas reviewed the papers while I fed Lily and changed Grace.

Every time I looked at the documents, I felt as though I were discovering a different version of my mother.

She had been loving and generous, but she had also been secretive.

What else had she known?

Finally, Thomas found a memorandum attached to a bank statement.

“This is important,” he said.

He turned the page toward us.

The memorandum described a proposed joint development between Carter Maritime Holdings and a separate investment company controlled by my mother's late husband.

My father.

I had been eight years old when he died.

I barely remembered him beyond the smell of his aftershave and the way he used to lift me onto his shoulders during summer festivals.

“Dad had a business?”” I asked.

“Your father held a minority interest in a property investment company before his death,” Thomas explained.

“Your mother inherited that interest. It appears the San Pedro property may have been acquired as part of a broader agreement.””

I stared at the document.

“So Richard may have invested money, but Mom had an interest in the project.””

“That's one possibility.””

“Then why would he spend ten years trying to get the property?””

Thomas tapped the correspondence.

“Because the development never proceeded as originally planned. The reasons aren't fully documented in this file.””

Emily frowned.

“Could Ryan know about this?””

“I don't know,” I admitted.

I thought of his reaction when he learned I had been searching through my mother's things.

The sudden anger.

The question about the study.

The way he had demanded to know whether I had taken anything.

Perhaps he knew exactly what the property was.

Perhaps he had married me without knowing.

Either possibility frightened me.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Ryan.

*Dad tells me you're at that house. Leave immediately.*

I stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

*You have no right to interfere with my family's business.*

I showed the messages to Thomas.

He photographed them and returned my phone.

“Do not respond.””

Another message appeared.

*If you care about the girls, you'll stop this before you make things worse for everyone.*

Emily's face hardened.

“That's a threat.””

“It's an attempt to pressure her,” Thomas said.

“We'll preserve it.””

I placed the phone facedown.

Ryan had once promised me that he would never let anyone hurt me.

Now he was using our children to force me into surrendering something he believed belonged to his family.

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

“I'm not leaving,” I said.

Thomas nodded.

“Good. But I recommend that you arrange separate legal representation for the property dispute. My office can provide the historical records, while your family lawyer handles the marital proceedings.””

“I'll speak to Megan.””

We spent the afternoon organizing copies of the documents.

By evening, Emily had arranged for a local locksmith to inspect the house and for a contractor to check the heating and plumbing. The property was habitable, but it needed cleaning and a few minor repairs.

For the first time since Ryan changed the locks, I had somewhere to sleep without worrying that a stranger would knock on the door demanding payment.

That night, I put the girls in the small bedroom overlooking the lemon tree.

I sat beside their bassinets and watched them sleep.

“Your grandmother was looking out for us,” I whispered.

Then I heard a knock.

Emily opened the front door and returned carrying a large envelope.

“No return address,” she said.

“The delivery driver said someone left it at the office next door.””

I opened it.

Inside was a printed photograph of my mother standing beside Richard outside the same house.

The photograph appeared to have been taken decades earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

*Ask what happened to Daniel Carter.*

I stared at the name.

Daniel Carter.

Richard's younger brother.

I had heard Ryan mention him only once, years earlier. He had said Daniel had died in a boating accident before Ryan was born.

I turned the photograph over again.

My mother stood beside Richard, but she wasn't smiling. Her expression was tense, and she held a thick envelope against her chest.

I called Thomas.

He answered immediately.

“Claire?””

“Someone sent me a photograph of Mom and Richard. It says to ask what happened to Daniel Carter.””

There was a long silence.

Then Thomas said, “Where did you get that?””

“Someone delivered it to the office next door.””

His voice became unusually careful.

“Listen to me. Don't show that photograph to Richard. Don't contact him about Daniel.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel's death was connected to the dispute over that property.””

My fingers went numb.

“What dispute?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Your mother believed Daniel had been cheated out of his share of the original investment. She tried to help him recover it.””

“Was that why Richard was looking for the property?””

“Possibly. But there is something I haven't told you.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

“Daniel Carter had a daughter.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Where is she?””

Thomas hesitated.

“The last record I have places her in San Pedro.””

My heart began to pound.

“What's her name?””

He answered quietly.

“Vanessa Carter.””

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

Vanessa.

The woman Ryan had brought home from the ship.

The woman who had laughed while I stood in the terminal holding his daughters.

I looked at Emily.

She had heard the name.

Neither of us spoke.

Then another message appeared on my phone.

May you like

This time, it was from Vanessa.

*We need to talk about your mother. Alone. Tomorrow morning.*
