Chapter 1: The Cruelest Homecoming

“Ryan, those are your daughters. How can you look at them and still pretend I’m the problem?””

My voice trembled across the Port of San Pedro, but my husband barely glanced at the two newborns in my arms. He was too busy holding another woman around the waist.

Three months after giving birth to twin girls, I had come to welcome Ryan home after seven exhausting months at sea. I had imagined this moment a thousand times. In every version, he rushed toward me, kissed my forehead, and gathered Lily and Grace into his arms as though he had spent every night dreaming of them.

Instead, I watched him kiss another woman.

And when he finally noticed me, he looked annoyed.

“Claire,” Ryan said, adjusting his designer watch, “what exactly are you doing here?””

I stared at the man I had loved for six years.

“Welcoming my husband home.””

The woman beside him laughed softly.

She wore a fitted white dress beneath a beige coat, her dark hair falling in perfect waves over her shoulders. One manicured hand rested against Ryan's chest, and she made no effort to move it.

Ryan sighed.

“Claire, this is Vanessa. She's an intern with the cruise line.””

“An intern?”” I repeated.

Vanessa smiled.

“You've probably heard about me.””

I hadn't.

But the way she looked at him told me everything I needed to know.

“How long?”” I asked Ryan.

His expression hardened.

“Don't start.””

“How long have you been sleeping with her?””

Several people near the terminal entrance turned toward us.

Ryan glanced around, clearly more concerned about the audience than the question.

“Can you not embarrass me in public?””

I almost laughed.

For seven months, I had cared for our daughters alone. I had endured sleepless nights, painful feedings, and the terrifying silence of an empty house at three in the morning. I had learned how to soothe two crying babies simultaneously while barely having the strength to stand.

When Lily developed a fever at six weeks old, I rushed her to the emergency room alone.

When Grace refused to sleep unless I held her, I spent entire nights sitting upright on the couch, afraid that if I moved, she would wake screaming.

And every time I felt abandoned, I reminded myself that Ryan was working hard for our family's future.

Now he stood in front of me, treating my existence like an inconvenience.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“You must be exhausted, Claire. Twins are a lot of work.””

Her voice sounded sympathetic, but her eyes traveled over my wrinkled blouse, my unwashed hair, and the dark circles beneath my eyes.

“Especially when you've let yourself go so much.””

My fingers tightened around Grace's blanket.

Ryan chuckled.

“Vanessa, behave.””

He said it with a smile, as though her cruelty amused him.

I looked at him, waiting for him to defend me.

Instead, he slipped his arm more firmly around her waist.

“Claire, I'm too attractive to be faithful. Don't make a scene.””

Vanessa burst out laughing.

A man standing behind the arrival barrier muttered something under his breath. An elderly woman shook her head.

I heard all of it.

But the only sound that mattered was Lily's tiny whimper against my chest.

I looked down at her.

Her little face was scrunched with sleep, and her fingers curled around the collar of my blouse. She had Ryan's nose. Grace had his eyes.

They were pieces of the man I had loved, innocent and helpless, with no idea that their father was standing a few feet away and treating their mother like a stranger.

“They're three months old,” I whispered.

“You haven't even met them properly.””

Ryan looked at the babies.

“Yes, Claire. I can see that.””

“You missed their birth.””

“I was working.””

“You missed their first smiles. Grace had to stay in the hospital an extra night because of her breathing, and I was alone.””

His jaw tightened.

“Do you want me to apologize for doing my job?””

“I want you to act like their father.””

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“Honestly, Ryan, I don't know how you put up with this.””

I turned toward her.

“You're standing beside a married man with two newborn daughters. What exactly do you think you're doing?””

Her smile disappeared for half a second.

Then she looked at my babies and shrugged.

“I'm not the one who married him.””

Ryan stepped between us.

“Enough.””

He pointed toward the parking area.

“You should take the girls home. We'll talk later.””

“Later?”” I repeated.

“When? After you finish your romantic reunion?””

“Claire, stop being dramatic.””

That word nearly destroyed me.

Dramatic.

As if I had chosen to discover his affair in a crowded terminal. As if I had deliberately carried two babies across town just to humiliate myself.

Before I could answer, another voice cut through the noise.

“What is all this?””

Richard, my father-in-law, approached with two men carrying his luggage. His expensive charcoal suit looked freshly pressed, and his silver hair was perfectly combed.

He had always believed that family loyalty meant protecting Ryan from consequences.

When he saw me, his mouth tightened.

“Claire? Why are you here?””

“To welcome your son.””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

Then at Ryan.

“Well,” he said, “this is certainly inconvenient.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“Inconvenient?””

He lowered his voice.

“Don't turn this into a spectacle. Ryan has worked hard to build his career. He meets people.

He entertains clients. You knew what his job involved.””

“Is that what you call cheating?””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Be careful how you speak to me.””

I looked from him to Ryan.

Neither man seemed ashamed.

Neither man seemed concerned that two tiny girls were watching their mother struggle to keep herself together.

I swallowed hard.

“Does Mom know?”” I asked.

Richard's face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“Your mother-in-law has nothing to do with this.””

“Then why did you look scared?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“That's enough, Claire.””

I shifted Lily higher in my arms.

“No. I'm done being told what's enough. I've spent seven months making excuses for you.

I've defended you to everyone who asked why you weren't here. I've told our daughters stories about the father who was coming home.””

My voice broke.

“And now I have to explain why he came home with another woman.””

Ryan's face reddened.

“You're making me look like a terrible husband.””

I stared at him.

“You did that yourself.””

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

He leaned closer and spoke quietly enough that only I could hear.

“Keep pushing me, Claire, and you'll regret it.””

A chill ran down my spine.

Then Richard reached for Ryan's shoulder.

“Not here,” he said.

“We have more important things to discuss.””

Ryan nodded and turned away from me.

Vanessa took his hand.

Together, they walked toward the parking lot.

My husband didn't look back.

I stood beneath the harsh morning sun with my daughters in my arms, watching the man I had waited seven months to see disappear into the crowd.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Ryan appeared on the screen.

*Don't go to the house. I've changed the locks. Your belongings will be delivered somewhere else.*

I read it twice.

Then a second message arrived.

*And don't even think about touching the money in our joint account. Dad has already taken care of that.*

My hands began to shake.

I called the bank.

After three transfers and two security questions, a customer service representative finally returned to the line.

“I'm sorry, Mrs. Carter,” she said.

“The account was frozen this morning at the request of the primary account holder.””

“That's impossible. I'm his wife.””

There was a pause.

“Ma'am, there's another issue. Your husband submitted documentation indicating that your access should be restricted because of a suspected financial dispute.””

I stopped breathing.

Ryan hadn't merely come home with another woman.

He had prepared for me to discover her.

And as I stood at the port with two hungry babies, no access to our money, and nowhere to go, I realized that the cruelty I had witnessed that morning might have been only the beginning.

Then the bank representative said something that made my blood run cold.

“Mrs. Carter, before I disconnect you, there's a note on the account that I think you need to hear.””

“What note?””

She hesitated.

“Your husband has requested that all future communications regarding your financial status be directed to his father, Richard Carter.””

I looked toward the parking lot where Ryan had disappeared.

His father wasn't just defending him.

May you like

He was helping him destroy me.

And I had no idea why.
