Chapter 9: The Final Lie
The officer’s words followed us home.
They followed me into every room.
Every corner.
Every quiet moment.
*The baby you thought was dead wasn’t the only child involved.*
I couldn’t sleep.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw two little girls.
Two daughters.
Two lives changed by one person’s obsession.
Lily slept in the room beside mine.
The daughter I raised.
The daughter who called me Mommy.
And downstairs, the little girl who had just learned I existed sat with Daniel.
My heart felt like it was being pulled in two directions.
Love didn’t divide.
But time did.
And time was something I could never get back.
The next morning, Daniel sat at the kitchen table with stacks of documents.
He hadn’t slept either.
“We need to know everything.””
I nodded.
Across from us, Michael sat with a lawyer.
For once, he looked smaller.
Older.
Human.
But I couldn’t feel sorry for him.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
Daniel placed a folder down.
“The hospital confirmed it.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Michael altered the records.””
My hands tightened.
“Both sets?””
Daniel nodded.
“He changed Lily’s records.””
My heart stopped.
“And the other baby?””
He looked at me.
“That’s the part nobody understands.””
Michael finally spoke.
“I do.””
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at the table.
“The babies were switched.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Michael swallowed.
“The hospital made a mistake.””
Daniel frowned.
“What mistake?””
“Two baby girls.””
My breathing slowed.
“Born the same night.””
Michael continued.
“One had complications.””
My stomach twisted.
“The other was healthy.””
He looked at me.
“And I saw an opportunity.””
I felt sick.
“You switched them.””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
Daniel stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
“You stole two children.””
Michael didn’t deny it.
“I thought I was fixing my life.””
I stepped closer.
“Explain.””
He looked at me.
“Margaret wanted proof Daniel’s life wasn’t perfect.””
My jaw tightened.
“So you created chaos.””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed innocent children.””
His eyes filled.
For the first time, I saw regret.
Real regret.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say that.””
I pointed upstairs.
“Lily spent six years wondering if she belonged.””
I pointed toward the living room.
“And another little girl spent six years thinking her mother abandoned her.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?””
The question was simple.
But it carried everything.
Why hurt us?
Why hurt children?
Why destroy a family?
Michael whispered:
“Because I wanted to prove something.””
“What?””
“That you weren’t better than me.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Michael looked up.
“You always had everything.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“You had love.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“You had people who chose you.””
He laughed sadly.
“I never felt chosen.””
Margaret looked away.
And suddenly I understood.
Not enough to forgive.
Never enough.
But enough to see where the darkness started.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“You could have told me.””
Michael shook his head.
“I was too far gone.””
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel asked:
“Where is the other baby?””
Michael looked at him.
“What?””
“The baby from the hospital.””
His face changed.
And that was when I knew.
There was still another secret.
Michael looked toward the window.
“She died.””
I felt anger rise.
“Are you lying?””
“No.””
“Then why did the officer say there were more records?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because the baby didn’t die.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He whispered:
“She was adopted.””
Nobody moved.
“By who?””
Michael looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
And the answer came out slowly.
“Someone in this family.””
The room went cold.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
Michael looked down.
“The baby was adopted by someone who already knew the truth.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice.
Older.
Shaking.
“Emily?””
I didn’t recognize it.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Laura.””
My heart started pounding.
“I knew your daughter.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Which one?””
The woman went silent.
Then whispered:
“The one you never knew existed.””
My fingers went cold.
“Where are you?””
“I need to tell you something before they stop me.””
“Who?””
Her voice dropped.
“The people who helped Michael.””
I stood.
“Who helped him?””
A long pause.
Then she said:
“Your mother-in-law wasn’t the only person in your family who knew.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked toward Margaret.
She looked terrified.
The woman continued:
“Your husband’s father knew too.””
Daniel froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“It was his final secret.””
I felt the room closing around me.
“What secret?””
The woman whispered:
“The baby Michael stole…”
A pause.
“Was not the only child he took.””
The line suddenly went dead.
And on the kitchen table, beside the old hospital records…
A new envelope appeared.
One I had never seen before.
With my name written on it.
May you like
And beneath my name were five words:
*The truth about your first daughter.*
